Context of 1 Timothy 5:8
6But she that lives in habits of self-indulgence is dead [while] living. 7And these things enjoin, that they may be irreproachable. But if any one does not provide for his own, and specially for those of [his] house, he has denied the faith, and is worse than the unbeliever. 9Let a widow be put upon the list, being of not less than sixty years, [having been] wife of one man, 10borne witness to in good works, if she have brought up children, if she have exercised hospitality, if she have washed saints' feet, if she have imparted relief to the distressed, if she have diligently followed every good work.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8But if any provide not for his own - The apostle was speaking 1 Timothy 5:4 particularly of the duty of children toward a widowed mother. In enforcing that duty, he gives the subject, as he often does in similar cases, a general direction, and says that all ought to provide for those who were dependent on them, and that if they did not do this, they had a less impressive sense of the obligations of duty than even the pagan had. Widowhood is a desolate state; but let widows trust in the Lord, and continue in prayer. All who live in pleasure, are dead while they live, spiritually dead, dead in trespasses and sins.
