Context of 1 Kings 9:14
12And Hiram came out from Tyre to see the cities that Solomon had given him; and they did not please him. 13And he said, What cities are these which thou hast given me, my brother? And he called them the land of Cabul to this day. And Hiram had sent to the king one hundred and twenty talents of gold. 15And this is the account of the levy which king Solomon raised, to build the house of Jehovah, and his own house, and Millo, and the wall of Jerusalem, and Hazor, and Megiddo, and Gezer. 16— Pharaoh king of Egypt had gone up and taken Gezer, and burned it with fire, and slain the Canaanites that dwelt in the city, and given it as a dowry to his daughter, Solomon's wife.

Commentaries on 1 Kings 9:14
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14Sixscore talents of gold - This was the sum which Hiram had lent, and in order to pay this Solomon had laid a tax upon his people, as we afterward learn. The whole is very darkly expressed.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 14Hiram sent sixscore talents of gold - Apparently, to show that, although disappointed, he was not offended. The sum sent was very large - above a million and a quarter of our money, according to one estimate of the weight of the Hebrew gold talent; or about 720,000 according to the estimate adopted in Exodus 38:24-29 note. At any rate, it was more than equal to a sixth part of Solomon‘s regular revenue 1 Kings 10:14.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 10-14Verses 10-14 Solomon gave Hiram twenty cities. Hiram did not like them. If Solomon would gratify him, let it be in his own element, by becoming his partner in trade, as he did. See how the providence of God suits this earth to the various tempers of men, and the dispositions of men to the earth, and all for the good of mankind in general.Read the comment
