Context of Joshua 16:9
7From Janoah it descended to Ataroth and Naarah, and then reached Jericho and went to the Jordan. 8From Tappuah the border went westward along the Brook of Kanah and ended at the Mediterranean Sea. This was the inheritance of the tribe of the descendants of Ephraim by their clans, together with the cities set apart for the descendants of Ephraim within the inheritance of the descendants of Manasseh — all these cities with their settlements. 10However, they did not drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer. So the Canaanites still live in Ephraim today, but they are forced laborers.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9The verb “were,” introduced by the King James Version in this verse should be omitted; and the full stop after Joshua 16:8 replaced by a colon. The reasons for granting these additional cities to the Ephraimites can only be…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-10Joseph had two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim (Genesis 41:50–52). Half of those descended from Manasseh received their inheritance east of the Jordan River. The tribe of Ephraim and the rest of Manasseh's tribe now received their land. This made the total number of land portions twelve, fulfilling Jacob's blessing to Joseph (Genesis 49:22–26). Like Judah in the south, Joseph’s tribes led from their central position in the north.Read the comment
