Context of Jeremiah 23:20
18For who has stood in the council of the Lord to see and hear his word? Who has paid attention to his word and obeyed? 19Look, a storm from the Lord! Wrath has gone out, a whirling storm. It will whirl about the heads of the wicked. The Lord’s anger will not turn away until he has completely fulfilled the purposes of his heart. In time to come you will understand it clearly. 21I did not send out these prophets, yet they ran. I did not speak to them, yet they prophesied. 22If they had really stood in my council, they would have enabled my people to hear my words and would have turned them from their evil ways and their evil deeds.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 20The latter days - The proper and final development of any event or series of events. Thus, the expression is used of the Christian dispensation as the full development of the Jewish Church. Here it means the destruction of Jerusalem, as the result of the sins of the Jews. Consider - Rather, understand. When Jerusalem is destroyed, the exiles - taught by adversity - will understand that it was sin which brought ruin upon their country.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-22Verses 9-22 The false prophets of Samaria had deluded the Israelites into idolatries; yet the Lord considered the false prophets of Jerusalem as guilty of more horrible wickedness, by which the people were made bold in sin. They made themselves believe that there was no harm in sin, and practised accordingly; then they made others believe so. Those who are…Read the comment
