Context of Ezekiel 48:29
27Next to the territory of Zebulun, from the east side to the west, will be Gad — one portion. 28Next to the territory of Gad toward the south side, the border will run from Tamar to the Waters of Meribath-kadesh, to the Brook of Egypt, and out to the Mediterranean Sea. This is the land you are to allot as an inheritance to Israel’s tribes, and these will be their portions.” This is the declaration of the Lord God. 30“These are the exits of the city: On the north side, which measures 1½ miles, 31there will be three gates facing north, the gates of the city being named for the tribes of Israel: one, the gate of Reuben; one, the gate of Judah; and one, the gate of Levi.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 21-29The land that lay to the east and west of the holy square completed the rest of the central area. This land was assigned to the prince. The prince held a higher position than the rest of the people. However, he was below the priests and the Levites in rank and responsibility. His place in the land showed this order. The design of the temple complex taught the same lesson. The arrangement of space showed clear levels of authority and holiness.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-351. The portions of the city, the temple, the prince, and the priesthood, are in the middle, not within the boundaries of any tribe, all alike having a common interest in them.
