Context of Amos 1:8

I will cut off the ruler from Ashdod, and the one who wields the scepter from Ashkelon. I will also turn my hand against Ekron, and the remainder of the Philistines will perish. The Lord God has spoken. 9The Lord says: I will not relent from punishing Tyre for three crimes, even four, because they handed over a whole community of exiles to Edom and broke a treaty of brotherhood. 10Therefore, I will send fire against the walls of Tyre, and it will consume its citadels.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8And I will cut off the inhabitant from Ashdod - Ashdod, as well as Ekron, have their names from their strength; Ashdod, “the mighty,” like Valentia; Ekron, “the firm-rooted.” The title of Ashdod implied that it was powerful to inflict as to resist. It may have meant, “the waster.” It too was eminent in its idolatry. The ark, when taken, was first placed in its Dagon-temple 1 Samuel 5:1-7; and, perhaps, in consequence, its lord is placed first of the five…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 88. Ashdod, &c.--Gath alone is not mentioned of the five chief Philistine cities. Subsequently to the subjugation of the Philistines by Uzziah, and then by Hezekiah, they were reduced…Read the comment
