Context of Acts 25:1

Three days after Festus arrived in the province, he went up to Jerusalem from Caesarea. 2The chief priests and the leaders of the Jews presented their case against Paul to him; and they appealed, 3asking for a favor against Paul, that Festus summon him to Jerusalem. They were, in fact, preparing an ambush along the road to kill him.

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 1Now when Festus was come into the province - By the province is meant Judea; for, after the death of Herod Agrippa, Claudius thought it imprudent to trust the government in the hands of his son Agrippa, who was then but seventeen years of age; therefore Cuspius Fadus was sent to be procurator. And when afterwards Claudius had given to Agrippa the tetrarchate of Philip, that of Batanea and Abila, he nevertheless kept the province of Judea more immediately…Read the comment

Thus, the English people speak of going up to London, because it is the capital. See the notes on Acts 15:1. To Jerusalem - The governors of Judea at this time usually resided…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 1Paul before Festus, he appeals to Caesar. (1-12) Festus confers with Agrippa respecting Paul. (13-27) Verses 1-12 See how restless malice is. Persecutors deem it a peculiar favour to have their malice gratified. Preaching Christ, the end of the law, was no offence against the law. In suffering times the prudence of the Lord's people is tried, as well as their patience; they need wisdom. It becomes those who are innocent, to insist upon their innocence…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-5Felix’s successor was Porcius Festus. Nero appointed him as governor of Judea around AD 59–62. Josephus describes Festus as a careful and honest leader. However, he could not stop the growing unrest among the Jewish people, even though he took strong action against the Assassins (a violent group also called the Sicarii; Josephus, Antiquities 20.8.10; see also Acts 21:38). Festus refused the Jewish leaders’ request to move Paul’s trial to Jerusalem, but he…Read the comment
