Context of 2 Samuel 6:14
12It was reported to King David, “The Lord has blessed Obed-edom’s family and all that belongs to him because of the ark of God.” So David went and had the ark of God brought up from Obed-edom’s house to the city of David with rejoicing. 13When those carrying the ark of the Lord advanced six steps, he sacrificed an ox and a fattened calf. David was dancing with all his might before the Lord wearing a linen ephod. 15He and the whole house of Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouts and the sound of the ram’s horn. 16As the ark of the Lord was entering the city of David, Saul’s daughter Michal looked down from the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, and she despised him in her heart.

Commentaries on 2 Samuel 6:14
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14And David danced before the Lord - Dancing is a religious ceremony among the Hindoos, and they consider it an act of devotion to their idols. It is evident that David considered it in the same light. What connection dancing can have with devotion I cannot tell. This I know, that unpremeditated and involuntary skipping may be the effect of sudden mental elation.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 14Danced - The Hebrew word is found only here and in 2 Samuel 6:16. It means “to dance in a circle,” hence, simply to dance. The parallel passage in 1 Chronicles 15:27 gives a widely different sense.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 12-19Verses 12-19 It became evident, that happy was the man who had the ark near him. Christ is indeed a Stone of stumbling, and a Rock of offence, to those that are disobedient; but to those that believe, he is a Corner-stone, elect, precious, 1Pe 2:6-8. Let us be religious. Is the ark a blessing to others' houses? We may have it, and the blessing of it, without fetching it away from our neighbours. David, at first setting out, offered sacrifices to God. - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 14linen ephod: This word comes from the Hebrew ’epod, often written as ephod. It is related to an Akkadian word, epattu, which means “a costly garment.” The ephod was often decorated with gold. People used garments like this to clothe statues of gods. Because priests and sometimes kings were seen as sacred persons (set apart for God), they wore garments of this type (see 1 Samuel 2:18, 28; 14:3; 22:18; 23:6, 9).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1414. David danced before the Lord--The Hebrews, like other ancient people, had their sacred dances, which were performed on their solemn anniversaries and other great occasions of commemorating some special token of the divine goodness and favor. with all his might--intimating violent efforts of leaping, and divested of his royal mantle (in a state of undress), conduct apparently unsuitable to the gravity of age or the dignity of a king. But it was…Read the comment
