Context of 2 Samuel 13:30
28Now Absalom commanded his young men, “Watch Amnon until he is in a good mood from the wine. When I order you to strike Amnon, then kill him. Don’t be afraid. Am I not the one who has commanded you? Be strong and valiant!” 29So Absalom’s young men did to Amnon just as Absalom had commanded. Then all the rest of the king’s sons got up, and each fled on his mule. While they were on the way, a report reached David: “Absalom struck down all the king’s sons; not even one of them survived!” 31In response the king stood up, tore his clothes, and lay down on the ground, and all his servants stood by with their clothes torn. 32But Jonadab, son of David’s brother Shimeah, spoke up: “My lord must not think they have killed all the young men, the king’s sons, because only Amnon is dead. In fact, Absalom has planned this ever since the day Amnon disgraced his sister Tamar.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 30Absalom hath slain all the king's sons - Fame never lessens but always magnifies a fact. Report, contrary to the nature of all other things, gains strength by going. Virgil has given, in his best manner, a fine personification of Fame or Evil Report. - Aen. iv., 173. Extemplo Libyae magnas it Fama per urbes; Fama, malum qua non aliud velocius ullum, Mobilitate viget, viresque adquirit eundo, etc. "Now Fame, tremendous fiend! without delay, Through Libyan…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 30-39Verses 30-39 Jonadab was as guilty of Ammon's death, as of his sin; such false friends do they prove, who counsel us to do wickedly. Instead of loathing Absalom as a murderer, David, after a time, longed to go forth to him. This was David's infirmity: God saw something in his heart that made a difference, else we should have thought that he, as much as Eli, honoured his sons more than God.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 30-3130-31. tidings came to David, saying, Absalom hath slain all the king's sons--It was natural that in the consternation and tumult caused by so atrocious a deed, an exaggerated report should reach the court, which was at once plunged into the depths of grief and despair. But the information of Jonadab, who seems to have been aware of the plan, and the arrival of the other princes, made known the real extent of the catastrophe. 2Sa 13:37-39. Absalom Flees…Read the comment
