Context of 2 Corinthians 11:22
20In fact, you put up with it if someone enslaves you, if someone exploits you, if someone takes advantage of you, if someone is arrogant toward you, if someone slaps you in the face. 21I say this to our shame: We have been too weak for that! But in whatever anyone dares to boast — I am talking foolishly — I also dare: Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they the descendants of Abraham? So am I. 23Are they servants of Christ? I’m talking like a madman — I’m a better one: with far more labors, many more imprisonments, far worse beatings, many times near death. 24Five times I received the forty lashes minus one from the Jews.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 22Are they Hebrews - Speaking the sacred language, and reading in the congregation from the Hebrew Scriptures? the same is my own language. Are they Israelites - Regularly descended from Jacob, and not from Esau? I am also one. Are they the seed of Abraham - Circumcised, and in the bond of the covenant? So am I. - Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 22Are they Hebrews? - This proves that the persons who had made the difficulty in Corinth were those who were of Hebrew extraction though it may be that they had been born in Greece and had been educated in the Grecian philosophy and art of rhetoric. It is also clear that they prided themselves on being Jews - on having a connection with the people and land from whence the religion which the Corinthian church now professed had emanated. Indications are…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 22-33Verses 22-33 The apostle gives an account of his labours and sufferings; not out of pride or vain-glory, but to the honour of God, who enabled him to do and suffer so much for the cause of Christ; and shows wherein he excelled the false apostles, who tried to lessen his character and usefulness. It astonishes us to reflect on this account of his dangers, hardships, and sufferings, and to observe his patience, perseverance, diligence, cheerfulness, and…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 22Are they Hebrews?: Paul's opponents viewed Jewish heritage as a qualification for ministry (see Philippians 3:5). Are they Israelites?: An Israelite was part of the covenant community through circumcision (compare John 1:47; Romans 9:4). Paul had this mark too and was a Pharisee, a very devoted follower of the Torah (Acts 26:4–5; Romans 11:1; Philippians 3:5–6). Are they descendants of Abraham?: This was another claim by Paul's opponents to God's favor…Read the comment
