Context of 1 Samuel 10:24
22They again inquired of the Lord, “Has the man come here yet?” The Lord replied, “There he is, hidden among the supplies.” 23They ran and got him from there. When he stood among the people, he stood a head taller than anyone else. Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see the one the Lord has chosen? There is no one like him among the entire population.” And all the people shouted, “Long live the king!” 25Samuel proclaimed to the people the rights of kingship. He wrote them on a scroll, which he placed in the presence of the Lord. Then Samuel sent all the people home. 26Saul also went to his home in Gibeah, and brave men whose hearts God had touched went with him.

Commentaries on 1 Samuel 10:24
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 24God save the king - There is no such word here; no, nor in the whole Bible; nor is it countenanced by any of the versions. The words which we thus translate here and elsewhere are simply המלך יחי yechi hammelech, "May the king live;" and so all the versions, the Targum excepted, which says, May the king prosper! The French Vive le roi! is a proper version of the Hebrew.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 17-27Verses 17-27 Samuel tells the people, Ye have this day rejected your God. So little fond was Saul now of that power, which soon after, when he possessed it, he could not think of parting with, that he hid himself. It is good to be conscious of our unworthiness and insufficiency for the services to which we are called; but men should not go into the contrary extreme, by refusing the employments to which the Lord and the church call them. The greater part…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 17-2517-25. Samuel called the people together ... at Mizpeh--a shaft-like hill near Hebron, five hundred feet in height. The national assemblies of the Israelites were held there. A day having been appointed for the election of a king, Samuel, after having charged the people with a rejection of God's institution and a superseding of it by one of their own, proceeded to the nomination of the new monarch. As it was of the utmost importance that the appointment…Read the comment
