Context of 1 Kings 8:59
57May the Lord our God be with us as he was with our ancestors. May he not abandon us or leave us 58so that he causes us to be devoted to him, to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commands, statutes, and ordinances, which he commanded our ancestors. May my words with which I have made my petition before the Lord be near the Lord our God day and night. May he uphold his servant’s cause and the cause of his people Israel, as each day requires. 60May all the peoples of the earth know that the Lord is God. There is no other! 61Be wholeheartedly devoted to the Lord our God to walk in his statutes and to keep his commands, as it is today.”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 59And let these my words - This and the following verse is a sort of supplement to the prayer which ended 1 Kings 8:53; but there is an important addition to this prayer in the parallel place, 2 Chronicles 6:41, 2 Chronicles 6:42; : "Now therefore arise, O Lord God, into thy resting place, thou and the ark of thy strength: let thy priests, O Lord God, be clothed with salvation, and let thy saints rejoice in goodness. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 54-61Verses 54-61 Never was a congregation dismissed with what was more likely to affect them, and to abide with them. What Solomon asks for in this prayer, is still granted in the intercession of Christ, of which his supplication was a type. We shall receive grace sufficient, suitable, and seasonable, in every time of need. No human heart is of itself willing to obey the gospel call to repentance, faith, and newness of life, walking in all the commandments of…Read the comment
