Context of 1 Kings 22:52
50Jehoshaphat rested with his ancestors and was buried with them in the city of his ancestor David. His son Jehoram became king in his place. 51Ahaziah son of Ahab became king over Israel in Samaria in the seventeenth year of Judah’s King Jehoshaphat, and he reigned over Israel two years. He did what was evil in the Lord’s sight. He walked in the ways of his father, in the ways of his mother, and in the ways of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who had caused Israel to sin. 53He served Baal and bowed in worship to him. He angered the Lord God of Israel just as his father had done.

Commentaries on 1 Kings 22:52
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 52In the way of his mother - In this phrase, which does not occur anywhere else, we see the strong feeling of the writer as to the influence of Jezebel (compare 1 Kings 16:31). Verses 1 Kings 22:51-53. It would be of advantage if these verses were transferred to the Second Book of Kings, which would thus open with the commencement of Ahaziah‘s reign. The division of the books does not proceed from the author. See the introduction to the Book of Kings sa180Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 51-53Verses 51-53 Ahaziah's reign was very short, not two years; some sinners God makes quick work with. A very bad character is given of him; he listened not to instruction, took no warning, but followed the example of his wicked father, and the counsel of his more wicked mother, Jezebel, who was still living. Miserable are the children who not only derive a sinful nature from their parents, but are taught by them to increase it; and most unhappy parents are…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 51-53The sad story of Ahaziah's rule in Israel continues in 2 Kings 1:1–18. He followed the evil ways of his parents, Ahab and Jezebel (1 Kings 21:25–26). He worshiped Baal (2 Kings 1:2, 16) and supported the state religion started by Jeroboam I (1 Kings 12:28–32). Ahaziah’s rise to power and character summary conclude Ahab's story in 1 Kings and smoothly transition to the ongoing story of the divided kingdom in 2 Kings.Read the comment
