Context of 1 Kings 1:7
5Adonijah son of Haggith kept exalting himself, saying, “I will be king!” He prepared chariots, cavalry, and fifty men to run ahead of him. 6But his father had never once infuriated him by asking, “Why did you do that?” In addition, he was quite handsome and was born after Absalom. He conspired with Joab son of Zeruiah and with the priest Abiathar. They supported Adonijah, 8but the priest Zadok, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the prophet Nathan, Shimei, Rei, and David’s royal guard did not side with Adonijah. 9Adonijah sacrificed sheep, goats, cattle, and fattened cattle near the stone of Zoheleth, which is next to En-rogel. - Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7And he conferred with Joab - Joab well knew, if he made the new king, he would necessarily be continued in the command of the army, and so govern him.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7Joab‘s defection on this occasion, after his faithful adherence to David during the troubles caused by Absalom 1 Chronicles 22:9 and by his preference for the character of Adonijah. He may also have thought that Adonijah, as the eldest son 1 Kings 1:5, had almost a right to succeed. Abiathar‘s defection is still more surprising than Joab‘s. For his history, see 1 Samuel 22:20 note. Hereto, David and he had been the firmest of friends. It has been…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 5-10Verses 5-10 Indulgent parents are often chastised with disobedient children, who are anxious to possess their estates. But we may well wonder by what arts Joab and Abiathar could be drawn aside.Read the comment
