Context of 1 Chronicles 12:38
36From Asher: 40,000 who could serve in the army, trained for battle. 37From across the Jordan — from the Reubenites, Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh: 120,000 men equipped with all the military weapons of war. All these warriors, lined up in battle formation, came to Hebron wholeheartedly determined to make David king over all Israel. All the rest of Israel was also of one mind to make David king. 39They spent three days there eating and drinking with David, for their relatives had provided for them. 40In addition, their neighbors from as far away as Issachar, Zebulun, and Naphtali came and brought food on donkeys, camels, mules, and oxen — abundant provisions of flour, fig cakes, raisins, wine and oil, herds, and flocks. Indeed, there was joy in Israel.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 23-40Verses 23-40 When the throne of Christ is set up in a soul, there is, or ought to be, great joy in that soul; and provision is made, not as here, for a few days, but for the whole life, and for eternity. Happy are those who wisely perceive it to be their duty and interest, to submit to the Saviour Jesus Christ, the Son of David; who renounce for his sake all that is not consistent; whose earnest endeavours to do good are directed by the wisdom that God…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 23-40The succession of a king was often a contentious issue, especially when the new king came from a different family. The gathering of all twelve tribes at Hebron, including some of Saul’s relatives (1 Chronicles 12:29), to confirm David’s rule showed that the tribes had resolved their conflicts after Saul’s death (12:23–37).
