Context of Jeremiah 50:21
19I will return Israel to his pasture, and he will graze on Carmel and Bashan; his soul will be satisfied on the hills of Ephraim and Gilead. 20In those days and at that time, declares the LORD, a search will be made for Israel’s guilt, but there will be none, and for Judah’s sins, but they will not be found; for I will forgive the remnant I preserve. Go up against the land of Merathaim, and against the residents of Pekod. Kill them and devote them to destruction. Do all that I have commanded you,” declares the LORD. 22“The noise of battle is in the land— the noise of great destruction. 23How the hammer of the whole earth lies broken and shattered! What a horror Babylon has become among the nations!

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 21Go up against the land of Merathaim - and against the inhabitants of Pekod - No such places as these are to be found any where else; and it is not likely that places are at all meant. The ancient Versions agree in rendering the first as an appellative, and the last as a verb, except the Chaldee, which has Pekod as a proper name. Dr. Blayney translates: - "Against the land of bitternesses, go up: Upon it, and upon its inhabitants, visit, O sword!" Dr…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 21The land of Merathaim - of double rebellion. Like Mitsraim, i. e., the two Egypts, Aram-Naharaim, i. e., Syria of the two rivers, or Mesopotamia, it is a dual. It may have been a real name; or - the dual ending being intensive - it may mean the land of very great rebelliousness. Pekod - Possibly a Babylonian town. Waste - Rather, slay, Jeremiah 50:27.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 21-32Verses 21-32 The forces are mustered and empowered to destroy Babylon. Let them do what God demands, and they shall bring to pass what he threatens. The pride of men's hearts sets God against them, and ripens them apace for ruin. Babylon's pride must be her ruin; she has been proud against the Holy One of Israel; who can keep those up whom God will throw down?Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 21The judgments against Babylon continue. The divine Judge is also shown as the leader of the armies. The Persians were the Lord’s warriors against Babylon, just as Babylon had been his warriors against Judah (Jeremiah 25:9). Merathaim (meaning double rebellion) refers to the southern part of the Tigris and Euphrates river valley. Pekod (meaning punishment) refers to a people living on the eastern side of the same valley. These people were Babylonian…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 2121. Merathaim--a symbolical name for Babylon, the doubly rebellious, namely, against God. Compare Jr 50:24, "thou hast striven against the Lord"; and Jr 50:29, "proud against the Lord." The "doubly" refers to: first, the Assyrian's oppression of Israel; next, the kindred Chaldean's oppression of Judah (compare Jr 50:17-20, 33; especially Jr 50:18). Pekod--(Eze 23:23); a chief province of Assyria, in which Nineveh, now overthrown, once lay. But, as in…Read the comment
