Context of Isaiah 24:16
14They raise their voices, they shout for joy; from the west they proclaim the majesty of the LORD. 15Therefore glorify the LORD in the east. Extol the name of the LORD, the God of Israel in the islands of the sea. From the ends of the earth we hear singing: “Glory to the Righteous One.” But I said, “I am wasting away! I am wasting away! Woe is me.” The treacherous betray; the treacherous deal in treachery. 17Terror and pit and snare await you, O dweller of the earth. 18Whoever flees the sound of panic will fall into the pit, and whoever climbs from the pit will be caught in the snare. For the windows of heaven are open, and the foundations of the earth are shaken.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 16But I said - The prophet speaks in the person of the inhabitants of the land still remaining there, who should be pursued by Divine vengeance, and suffer repeated distresses from the inroads and depredations of their powerful enemies. Agreeably to what he said before in a general denunciation of these calamities: - "Though there be a tenth part remaining in it; Even this shall undergo a repeated destruction." Isaiah 6:13; (note). - Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 16From the uttermost part of the earth - The word earth‘ here seems to be taken in its usual sense, and to denote countries without the bounds of Palestine, and the phrase is equivalent to remote regions or distant countries (see the note at Isaiah 11:12). The prophet here represents himself as hearing those songs from distant lands as a grand chorus, the sound of which came in upon and pervaded Palestine. The worship of God would be still continued, though…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 16-23Verses 16-23 Believers may be driven into the uttermost parts of the earth; but they are singing, not sighing. Here is terror to sinners; the prophet laments the miseries he saw breaking in like a torrent; and the small number of believers. He foresees that sin would abound. The meaning is plain, that evil pursues sinners. Unsteady, uncertain are all these things. Worldly men think to dwell in the earth as in a palace, as in a castle; but it shall be…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 16I am wasting away: The prophets knew the emotional pain caused by their people's sins and its consequences (see Isaiah 15:5; 21:4; Jeremiah 15:10; Micah 1:8). Even though parts of the new world have begun to appear, the lies and evil ways of the old world still control people for a time.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1616. Songs to God come in together to Palestine from distant lands, as a grand chorus. glory to the righteous--the burden of the songs (Is 26:2, 7). Amidst exile, the loss of their temple, and all that is dear to man, their confidence in God is unshaken. These songs recall the joy of other times and draw from Jerusalem in her present calamities, the cry, "My leanness." Horsley translates, "glory to the Just One"; then My leanness expresses his sense of…Read the comment
