Context of Genesis 3:2

1Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field that the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden?’” The woman answered the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden, 3but about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You must not eat of it or touch it, or you will die.’” 4“You will not surely die,” the serpent told the woman.

• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2-3The woman tried to clarify things. But in several ways, she made the privileges God gave her and her husband seem less important: She changed God’s words from “freely eat” (2:16) to may eat. She minimized the importance of having fruit from every tree except one (2:17). She added not touching to God’s rule against eating (2:17). She made the threat of death seem less certain (2:17).Read the comment

But there is reason to think that she had already received an injurious impression; for in using the words "lest ye die," instead of "ye shall surely die" [Ge…Read the comment
