Context of Ezra 7:9
7So in the seventh year of King Artaxerxes, he went up to Jerusalem with some of the Israelites, including priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers, and temple servants. 8Ezra arrived in Jerusalem in the fifth month of the seventh year of the king. He had begun the journey from Babylon on the first day of the first month, and he arrived in Jerusalem on the first day of the fifth month, for the gracious hand of his God was upon him. 10For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the LORD, to practice it, and to teach its statutes and ordinances in Israel. 11This is the text of the letter King Artaxerxes had given to Ezra the priest and scribe, an expert in the commandments and statutes of the LORD to Israel:

Commentaries on Ezra 7:9
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9The direct distance of Babylon from Jerusalem is about 520 miles; and the circuitous route by Carchemish and the Orontes valley, which was ordinarily taken by armies or large bodies of men, is about 900 miles. The time occupied in the journey is long, and is perhaps to be accounted for by the dangers alluded to in Ezra 8:22, Ezra 8:31.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 9Ezra and his group planned to leave Babylon on April 8 but actually departed on April 19, 458 BC (Ezra 8:31). During those eleven days, he organized the group, gathered at the Ahava Canal, searched for more Levites, and declared a fast. To cover the 800-mile journey in four months, Ezra's group walked about ten miles per day, five days a week. Ezra knew his success was due to the gracious hand of his God (see also Ezra 7:6, 28; 8:22, 31).Read the comment
