Context of Hosea 2:20

18And in that day will I make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, and with the birds of the heavens, and with the creeping things of the ground: and I will break the bow and the sword and the battle out of the land, and will make them to lie down safely. 19And I will betroth thee unto me for ever; yea, I will betroth thee unto me in righteousness, and in justice, and in lovingkindness, and in mercies. I will even betroth thee unto me in faithfulness; and thou shalt know Jehovah. 21And it shall come to pass in that day, I will answer, saith Jehovah, I will answer the heavens, and they shall answer the earth; 22and the earth shall answer the grain, and the new wine, and the oil; and they shall answer Jezreel.

Commentaries on Hosea 2:20

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 20In faithfulness - Thou shalt no more prostitute thyself to idols, but be faithful to him who calls himself thy husband. Thou shalt know the Lord - There shall be no more infidelity on thy part nor divorce on mine; and thou shalt experience me to be the sole, present, and eternal good of thy immortal spirit: and when this conviction is fully rooted then there can be no more idolatry, for it shall be seen that an idol is nothing in the world.Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-23Verses 14-23 After these judgments the Lord would deal with Israel more gently. By the promise of rest in Christ we are invited to take his yoke upon us; and the work of conversion may be forwarded by comforts as well as by convictions. But usually the Lord drives us to despair of earthly joy, and help from ourselves, that, being shut from every other door, we may knock at Mercy's gate. From that time Israel would be more truly attached to the Lord; no…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 19-20I will betroth you: This Hebrew verb, used three times in these verses, can be translated with the word betroth. In ancient times, betrothal included all the legal steps of marriage, like the groom paying a bride price. The only things missing were the marriage ceremony and sexual consummation. The Lord promised to betroth Israel to himself forever. To ensure this eternal marriage, God provided a bride price with five priceless qualities: Righteousness…Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 19-2019-20. "Betroth" is thrice repeated, implying the intense love of God to His people; and perhaps, also, the three Persons of the Triune God, severally engaging to make good the betrothal. The marriage covenant will be as it were renewed from the beginning, on a different footing; not for a time only, as before, through the apostasy of the people, but "forever" through the grace of God writing the law on their hearts by the Spirit of Messiah (Jr 31:31-37)…Read the comment
