Context of 2 Chronicles 16:8
6Then Asa the king took all Judah; and they carried away the stones of Ramah, and the timber thereof, wherewith Baasha had builded; and he built therewith Geba and Mizpah. 7And at that time Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah, and said unto him, Because thou hast relied on the king of Syria, and hast not relied on Jehovah thy God, therefore is the host of the king of Syria escaped out of thy hand. Were not the Ethiopians and the Lubim a huge host, with chariots and horsemen exceeding many? yet, because thou didst rely on Jehovah, he delivered them into thy hand. 9For the eyes of Jehovah run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. Herein thou hast done foolishly; for from henceforth thou shalt have wars. 10Then Asa was wroth with the seer, and put him in the prison-house; for he was in a rage with him because of this thing. And Asa oppressed some of the people at the same time.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7-9Hanani the seer told Asa he would face war from then on because he disobeyed. This judgment contrasted with Asa’s earlier victory over Zerah, when he trusted in the Lord despite the odds (2 Chronicles 14:9–13). Asa's earlier trust in the Lord brought peace to the land (2 Chronicles 14:5), but now his reliance on military power would lead to ongoing warfare.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 7-107-10. Hanani the seer came to Asa ... and said--His object was to show the king his error in forming his recent league with Ben-hadad. The prophet represented the appropriation of the temple treasures to purchase the services of the Syrian mercenaries, as indicating a distrust in God most blameable with the king's experience. He added, that in consequence of this want of faith, Asa had lost the opportunity of gaining a victory over the united forces of…Read the comment
