Context of Psalms 116:13

11I said in my alarm, “All men are liars.” 12What will I give to the Lord [in return] For all His benefits toward me? [How can I repay Him for His precious blessings?] I will lift up the cup of salvation And call on the name of the Lord. 14I will pay my vows to the Lord, Yes, in the presence of all His people. 15Precious [and of great consequence] in the sight of the Lord Is the death of His godly ones [so He watches over them].

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 13I will take the cup of salvation - Literally, The cup of salvation, or deliverance, will I lift up. Alluding to the action in taking the cup of blessing among the Jews, which, when the person or master of the family lifted up, he said these words, "Blessed be the Lord, the Maker of the world, who has created the fruit of the vine!" But it may probably allude to the libation-offering, Numbers 28:7; for the three last verses seem to intimate that the…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 13I will take the cup of salvation - Compare the notes at Psalm 11:6. The “cup of salvation” means the cup by which his sense of the greatness of the salvation might be expressed - the cup of thanksgiving. Compare the notes at 1 Corinthians 10:16. The reference seems to be to a custom in festivals of drinking a cup of wine as a special expression of thanks or of obligation. The act would be more solemn, and the truth more deeply impressed on the mind, when…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 10-19Verses 10-19 When troubled, we do best to hold our peace, for we are apt to speak unadvisedly. Yet there may be true faith where there are workings of unbelief; but then faith will prevail; and being humbled for our distrust of God's word, we shall experience his faithfulness to it. What can the pardoned sinner, or what can those who have been delivered from trouble or distress, render to the Lord for his benefits? We cannot in any way profit him. Our…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 12-14The Lord’s gracious gifts are so great that the psalmist can do nothing to repay his debt. Keeping his promises publicly demonstrates his gratitude. All he has done for the psalmist includes answers to prayer, rescue, and life. The cup of salvation overflows with God’s blessings (Psalm 23:5), unlike the cup of judgment (75:8). The psalmist makes vows (Psalm 116:18) to praise the Lord publicly (116:17–18).Read the comment
