Context of Mark 9:6
4Elijah appeared to them along with Moses, and they were having a conversation with Jesus. 5Peter responded and said to Jesus, “Rabbi (Master), it is good for us to be here; let us make three [sacred] tents—one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” For he did not [really] know what to say because they were terrified [and stunned by the miraculous sight]. 7Then a cloud formed, overshadowing them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is My beloved Son. Listen to Him and obey Him!” 8Suddenly they looked around and no longer saw anyone with them, except Jesus alone.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5-6The idea to put up three shelters as memorials treats Moses, Elijah, and Jesus as equals (see Leviticus 23:33–43; Numbers 29:12–34). But this idea ignored Peter’s earlier confession that Jesus is the Messiah (Mark 8:29). It also ignored that only Jesus had been transfigured (his appearance changed and showed his glory, 9:2–3).Read the comment
