Context of Job 20:28

26Complete darkness (misfortune) is held in reserve for his treasures. An unfanned fire will devour him; It will consume the survivor in his tent. 27The heavens will reveal his wickedness and guilt, And the earth will rise up against him. The produce and increase of his house will depart [with the victors]; His possessions will be dragged away in the day of God’s wrath. 29This is the wicked man’s portion from God, And the heritage decreed and appointed to him by God.”

Commentaries on Job 20:28

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 28The increase of his house shall depart, and his goods shall flow away in the day of his wrath - A farther allusion to the punishment of the rebellious company of Korah, who not only perished themselves, but their houses also, and their goods. Numbers 16:32. These examples were all in point, on the ground assumed by Zophar; and such well-attested facts would not be passed over by him, had he known the record of them; and that he did know it, alludes to it…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 28The increase of his house shall depart - Septuagint, “Destruction shall bring his house to an end.” The word rendered “depart” (יגל yı̂gel from גלה gâlâh ), means, properly, “shall go into captivity.” The sense is, that whatever he had laid up in his house would entirely disappear. His goods shall flow away - What he had gained would seem to flow away like water. In the day of his wrath - The wrath of God - for so the connection demands.Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 23-29Verses 23-29 Zophar, having described the vexations which attend wicked practices, shows their ruin from God's wrath. There is no fence against this, but in Christ, who is the only Covert from the storm and tempest, Is 32:2. Zophar concludes, "This is the portion of a wicked man from God;" it is allotted him. Never was any doctrine better explained, or worse applied, than this by Zophar, who intended to prove Job a hypocrite. Let us receive the good…Read the comment
