Context of Genesis 3:9
7Then the eyes of the two of them were opened [that is, their awareness increased], and they knew that they were naked; and they fastened fig leaves together and made themselves coverings. 8And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool [afternoon breeze] of the day, so the man and his wife hid and kept themselves hidden from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to Adam, and said to him, “Where are you?” 10He said, “I heard the sound of You [walking] in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.” 11God said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten [fruit] from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?”

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-13Verses 9-13 Observe the startling question, Adam, where art thou? Those who by sin go astray from God, should seriously consider where they are; they are afar off from all good, in the midst of their enemies, in bondage to Satan, and in the high road to utter ruin. This lost sheep had wandered without end, if the good Shepherd had not sought after him, and told him, that where he was straying he could not be either happy or easy. If sinners will but…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 9-10Where are you?: The man's answer shows the real purpose of this question (3:10). The real meaning of the question was, "Why are you hiding?" (compare 4:9–10). I was afraid because I was naked: Modesty was not the problem. The shame from their rebellion made Adam and his wife hide. They might have also feared punishment (see study note on 3:8).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 6-96. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food--Her imagination and feelings were completely won; and the fall of Eve was soon followed by that of Adam. The history of every temptation, and of every sin, is the same; the outward object of attraction, the inward commotion of mind, the increase and triumph of passionate desire; ending in the degradation, slavery, and ruin of the soul (Jas 1:15; 1Jo 2:16).Read the comment
