Context of Ezekiel 4:6
4“Then lie down on your left side (toward the north) to bear [symbolically] the wickedness and punishment of the house of Israel. You shall bear their wickedness and punishment for the number of days that you lie on your side. 5For I have assigned you the years of their wickedness and punishment, according to the number of the days, three hundred and ninety days [representing three hundred and ninety years]; in this way you shall bear [symbolically] the wickedness and punishment of the house of Israel. When you have completed these [days for Israel], lie down again, but on your right side (toward the south), and you shall bear the wickedness and punishment of the house of Judah forty days. I have assigned you one day for each year. 7Then you shall set your face toward the siege of Jerusalem with your arm bared and prophesy against it. 8Now behold, I will put ropes on you so that you cannot turn from one side to the other until you have completed the days of your siege.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 6Forty days - Reckon, says Archbishop Newcome, near fifteen years and six months in the reign of Manasseh, two years in that of Amon, three months in that of Jehoahaz, eleven years in that of Jehoiakim, three months and ten days in that of Jehoiachin, and eleven years in that of Zedekiah; and there arises a period of forty years, during which gross idolatry was practiced in the kingdom of Judah. Forty days may have been employed in spoiling and desolating…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 6Judah refers to the community of people living in exile. Their time away from the land is pictured as 40 years. This number suggests that they were like a lost generation. It recalls the generation that wandered 40 years in the wilderness because of their sin (Numbers 14:34). The 430 days of Ezekiel’s confinement (Ezekiel 4:5) match the 430 years that Israel lived in Egypt (Exodus 12:40). This parallel suggests hope. Just as God once led his people out of…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 66. each day for a year--literally, "a day for a year, a day for a year." Twice repeated, to mark more distinctly the reference to Nu 14:34. The picturing of the future under the image of the past, wherein the meaning was far from lying on the surface, was intended to arouse to a less superficial mode of thinking, just as the partial veiling of truth in Jesus' parables was designed to stimulate inquiry; also to remind men that God's dealings in the past…Read the comment
