Context of Ezekiel 4:5
3Further, take an iron plate and place it as an iron wall between you and the city, and set your face toward it so that it is under siege, and besiege it. This is a sign to the house of Israel. 4“Then lie down on your left side (toward the north) to bear [symbolically] the wickedness and punishment of the house of Israel. You shall bear their wickedness and punishment for the number of days that you lie on your side. For I have assigned you the years of their wickedness and punishment, according to the number of the days, three hundred and ninety days [representing three hundred and ninety years]; in this way you shall bear [symbolically] the wickedness and punishment of the house of Israel. 6When you have completed these [days for Israel], lie down again, but on your right side (toward the south), and you shall bear the wickedness and punishment of the house of Judah forty days. I have assigned you one day for each year. 7Then you shall set your face toward the siege of Jerusalem with your arm bared and prophesy against it.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5According to the number of the days - Or, “to be to thee as a number of days (even as)” etc. Compare the margin reference. Some conceive that these “days” were the years during which Israel and Judah sinned, and date in the case of Israel from Jeroboam‘s rebellion to the time at which Ezekiel wrote (circa 390 years); and in the case of Judah from Josiah‘s reformation. But it seems more in accordance with the other “signs,” to suppose that they represent…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 4-5Israel refers to the entire covenant community, not just the northern kingdom. The number 390 has been interpreted in different ways. A likely explanation is that 390 represents years. It may refer to the time from early in Solomon’s reign, which lasted from 971 to 931 BC, to the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC (see 2 Kings 25:3–7).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 55. three hundred and ninety days--The three hundred ninety years of punishment appointed for Israel, and forty for Judah, cannot refer to the siege of Jerusalem. That siege is referred to in Eze 4:1-3, and in a sense restricted to the literal siege, but comprehending the whole train of punishment to be inflicted for their sin; therefore we read here merely of its sore pressure, not of its result. The sum of three hundred ninety and forty years is four…Read the comment
