Context of Daniel 9:27
25So you are to know and understand that from the issuance of the command to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until [the coming of] the Messiah (the Anointed One), the Prince, there will be seven weeks [of years] and sixty-two weeks [of years]; it will be built again, with [a city] plaza and moat, even in times of trouble. 26Then after the sixty-two weeks [of years] the Anointed One will be cut off [and denied His Messianic kingdom] and have nothing [and no one to defend Him], and the people of the [other] prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. Its end will come with a flood; even to the end there will be war; desolations are determined. And he will enter into a binding and irrevocable covenant with the many for one week (seven years), but in the middle of the week he will stop the sacrifice and grain offering [for the remaining three and one-half years]; and on the wing of abominations will come one who makes desolate, even until the complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who causes the horror.”

Commentaries on Daniel 9:27
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 27And for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate - This clause is remarkably obscure. משמם שקוצים כנף kenaph shikkutsim meshomem, "And upon the wing of abominations causing amazement." This is a literal translation of the place; but still there is no determinate sense. A Hebrews MS., written in the thirteenth century, has preserved a very remarkable reading here, which frees the place from all embarrassment. Instead of the above…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 27And he shall confirm the covenant - literally, “he shall make strong” - והגביר vehı̂gebı̂yr The idea is that of giving strength, or stability; of making firm and sure. The Hebrew word here evidently refers to the “covenant” which God is said to establish with his people - so often referred to in the Scriptures as expressing the relation between Him and them, and hence used, in general, to denote the laws and institutions of the true religion - the laws…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 20-27Verses 20-27 An answer was immediately sent to Daniel's prayer, and it is a very memorable one. We cannot now expect that God should send answers to our prayers by angels, but if we pray with fervency for that which God has promised, we may by faith take the promise as an immediate answer to the prayer; for He is faithful that has promised. Daniel had a far greater and more glorious redemption discovered to him, which God would work out for his church in…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 27he: Most interpreters think this pronoun refers to the ruler in Daniel 9:26. Some believe it refers to the anointed one in Daniel 9:25–26, suggesting a prophecy about Christ. They say Christ made a covenant and ended the need for sacrifices through his death. However, the term for making a treaty implies forcing a covenant, likely through intimidation. Antiochus IV forced a covenant with Judea's people when he began ruling in 175 BC (compare Daniel 11:23…Read the comment
