Context of Amos 1:15
13Thus says the Lord, “For three transgressions of the children of Ammon and for four (multiplied delinquencies) I will not reverse its punishment or revoke My word concerning it, Because the Ammonites have ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead, That they might enlarge their border. 14So I will kindle a fire [of war, conquest, and destruction] on the wall of Rabbah [in Ammon] And it shall devour its strongholds Amid war cries and shouts of alarm on the day of battle, And a tempest on the day of the whirlwind [when the enemy captures the city]. Their king shall go into exile, He and his princes together,” says the Lord.

Hence, as a first step in the subdual, the reigning head and those who shared his counsels were removed. Ammon then, savage as it was in act, was no ill-organized horde. On the contrary, barren and waste as all that country now is, it must once…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 15Their king: The Hebrew term malkam might refer to the Ammonite god Molech. In ancient times, people believed that when a nation was conquered, its god or gods went into exile with them (see Amos 5:26–27; 1 Samuel 5:1–2; Isaiah 46:1).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1515. their king ... princes--or else, "their Molech (the idol of Ammon) and his priests" [Grotius and Septuagint]. Is 43:28 so uses "princes" for "priests." So Am 5:26, "your Molech"; and Jr 49:3, Margin. English Version, however, is perhaps preferable both here and in Jr 49:3; see on Jr 49:3.Read the comment
