Context of 2 Kings 19:28
26Therefore their inhabitants were powerless, They were shattered [in spirit] and put to shame; They were like plants of the field, the green herb, As grass on the housetops is scorched before it is grown up. 27But I [the Lord] know your sitting down [O Sennacherib], Your going out, your coming in, And your raging against Me. Because of your raging against Me, And because your arrogance and complacency have come up to My ears, I will put My hook in your nose, And My bridle in your lips, And I will turn you back [to Assyria] by the way that you came. 29‘Then this shall be the sign [of these things] to you [Hezekiah]: this year you will eat what grows of itself, in the second year what springs up voluntarily, and in the third year sow and reap, plant vineyards, and eat their fruit. 30The survivors who remain of the house of Judah will again take root downward and bear fruit upward.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 28I will put my hook in thy nose - This seems to be an allusion to the method of guiding a buffalo; he has a sort of ring put into his nose, to which a cord or bridle is attached, by which he can be turned to the right, or to the left, or round about, according to the pleasure of his driver.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 28Thy tumult - Rather, “thy arrogance.” I will put my hook in nose - Rather, “my ring.” The sculptures show that the kings of Babylon and Assyria were in the habit of actually passing a ring through the flesh of their more distinguished prisoners, of attaching a thong or a rope to it, and of thus leading them about as with a “bridle.” In Assyria the ring was, at least ordinarily, passed through the lower lip; while in Babylonia it appears to have been…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 20-34Verses 20-34 All Sennacherib's motions were under the Divine cognizance. God himself undertakes to defend the city; and that person, that place, cannot but be safe, which he undertakes to protect. The invasion of the Assyrians probably had prevented the land from being sown that year. The next is supposed to have been the sabbatical year, but the Lord engaged that the produce of the land should be sufficient for their support during those two years. As…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 27-28I know your sitting down: See Psalms 44:21; 94:11. My hook … and My bit: The Assyrian records describe similar harsh treatment of prisoners. The Lord would treat Sennacherib as he and his ancestors treated those they conquered.Read the comment
