Context of 2 Kings 18:33
31Do not listen to Hezekiah, for thus says the king of Assyria: “Surrender to me and come out to [meet] me, and every man may eat from his own vine and fig tree, and every man may drink the waters of his own well, 32until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive trees and honey, so that you may live and not die.” Do not listen to Hezekiah when he misleads and incites you, saying, “The Lord will rescue us!” Has any one of the gods of the nations ever rescued his land from the hand of the king of Assyria? 34Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad [in Aram]? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivvah [in the valley of the Euphrates]? Have they rescued Samaria (Israel’s capital) from my hand? 35Who among all the gods of the lands have rescued their lands from my hand, that the Lord would rescue Jerusalem from my hand?’ ”

Commentaries on 2 Kings 18:33
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 33The boast is natural. The Assyrians had had an uninterrupted career of success, and might well believe that their gods were more powerful than those of the nations with whom they had warred. It is not surprising that they did not understand that their successes hitherto had been allowed by the very God, Yahweh, against whom they were now boasting themselves.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 17-37Verses 17-37 Rabshakeh tries to convince the Jews, that it was to no purpose for them to stand it out. What confidence is this wherein thou trustest? It were well if sinners would submit to the force of this argument, in seeking peace with God. It is, therefore, our wisdom to yield to him, because it is in vain to contend with him: what confidence is that which those trust in who stand out against him? A great deal of art there is in this speech of…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 32-35The LORD will deliver us: The Assyrian chief of staff mocked Judah’s trust in the Lord. He claimed that the Lord was no different from the gods of other nations and could not save them. Arpad was a city-state northwest of Aleppo. Like Hamath, it was a center of Aramean activity and is mentioned elsewhere in the Old Testament (see Isaiah 10:9; Jeremiah 49:23).Read the comment
