Context of 1 Kings 11:27
25So Rezon was an adversary to Israel all the days of Solomon, along with the evil that Hadad inflicted. Rezon hated Israel and reigned over Aram (Syria). 26Jeroboam, Solomon’s servant, the son of Nebat, an Ephrathite of Zeredah whose mother’s name was Zeruah, a widow, also rebelled against the king. Now this is the reason why he rebelled against the king: Solomon built the Millo (fortification) and he repaired and closed the breach of the city of his father David. 28The man Jeroboam was a brave warrior and when Solomon saw that the young man was industrious, he put him in charge of all the forced labor of the house of Joseph. 29It came about at that time, when Jeroboam left Jerusalem, that the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite met him on the road. Now Ahijah had covered himself with a new cloak; and the two of them were alone in the field.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 26-40Verses 26-40 In telling the reason why God rent the kingdom from the house of Solomon, Ahijah warned Jeroboam to take heed of sinning away his preferment. Yet the house of David must be supported; out of it the Messiah would arise. Solomon sought to kill his successor. Had not he taught others, that whatever devices are in men's hearts, the counsel of the Lord shall stand? Yet he himself thinks to defeat that counsel. Jeroboam withdrew into Egypt, and was…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 27-28Solomon noticed Jeroboam's strong work ethic during the city's repairs and put him in charge. Jeroboam's position among the workers likely made him aware of growing unrest in the northern parts of Solomon's kingdom. Jeroboam showed leadership during this time and when the empire split and the northern tribes reorganized (1 Kings 12:12–19, 25–33). Unfortunately, he did not always use his skills wisely and later proved unfaithful to the Lord (1 Kings…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 26-4026-40. Jeroboam--This was an internal enemy of a still more formidable character. He was a young man of talent and energy, who, having been appointed by Solomon superintendent of the engineering works projected around Jerusalem, had risen into public notice, and on being informed by a very significant act of the prophet Ahijah of the royal destiny which, by divine appointment, awaited him, his mind took a new turn.Read the comment
