Context of 1 Chronicles 27:22

20of the Ephraimites, Hoshea the son of Azaziah; of the half-tribe of Manasseh, Joel the son of Pedaiah; 21of the half-tribe of Manasseh in Gilead, Iddo the son of Zechariah; of Benjamin, Jaasiel the son of Abner; of Dan, Azarel the son of Jeroham. These were the leaders of the tribes of Israel. 23But David did not count those twenty years of age and under, for the Lord had said he would multiply Israel as the stars of heaven. 24Joab the son of Zeruiah began a census but did not finish; and because of this, [God’s] wrath came on Israel, and the number was not recorded in the chronicles of King David.

Commentaries on 1 Chronicles 27:22

• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 16-22Verses 16-22 Gad and Asher are omitted from this list of the tribes. Similarly, Dan and Zebulon are omitted from the genealogical survey of the tribes 1 Chronicles 48. We can only suppose that the lists, as they came down to the writer of Chronicles, were incomplete. The “rulers” or “princes” of the tribes appear to have been the oldest lineal descendants of the patriarchs according to the law of primogeniture.Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 16-34Verses 16-34 The officers of the court, or the rulers of the king's substance, had the oversight and charge of the king's tillage, his vineyards, his herds, his flocks, which formed the wealth of eastern kings. Much of the wisdom of princes is seen in the choice of their ministry, and common persons show it in the choice of their advisers. David, though he had all these about him, preferred the word of God before them all. Thy testimonies are my delight…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 16-22The order of the tribes generally follows Numbers 1:5–15. It starts with Leah's six sons, then Rachel's two sons (Joseph's tribe is divided into Ephraim and Manasseh, followed by Benjamin), and then Bilhah's two sons (Dan and Naphtali). There are some changes: Naphtali is moved to his location next to Zebulun The tribe of Levi is added according to Levi's birth order, with Aaron's family (the priests) listed separately The list does not include Zilpah's…Read the comment
