Context of 1 Chronicles 16:5
3He distributed to everyone in Israel, both man and woman, to everyone a loaf of bread, a portion of meat, and a raisin cake. 4He appointed some of the Levites to minister before the ark of the Lord and to profess [God’s name] and to thank and praise the Lord, the God of Israel: Asaph the chief, and second to him Zechariah, then Jeiel (Jaaziel), Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-edom, and Jeiel with musical instruments, harps and lyres; also Asaph played loud-sounding cymbals; 6and Benaiah and Jahaziel the priests blew trumpets continually before the ark of the covenant of God. 7Then on that day David first entrusted to Asaph and his relatives to give thanks to the Lord [as their chief task].

It contains a detailed account of the service which David instituted at this time, a service out of which grew the more elaborate service of the temple. The language of much of the passage is remarkably archaic, and there can be no reasonable doubt that it is in the main an extract from a record of the time of David. 1 Chronicles…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-43The transfer of the ark (1 Chronicles 16:1–3) and the event's conclusion (16:43) are reported just like in Samuel (see 2 Samuel 6:17–20). However, between these parts, the Chronicler adds details about the celebrations and the permanent worship arrangements (1 Chronicles 16:4–42). David’s psalm of celebration is the main focus of the account.Read the comment
