Context of 1 Chronicles 12:39
37From the other side [east] of the Jordan River, of [the tribes of] Reuben and Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh, 120,000 men, armed with all kinds of weapons of war for the battle. 38All these, being men of war arrayed in battle formation, came to Hebron with a perfect (committed) heart to make David king over all Israel; and all the rest of Israel were also of one mind to make David king. They were there with David for three days, eating and drinking, for their relatives had prepared for them. 40Also those who were [living] near them [from] as far as [the tribes of] Issachar, Zebulun, and Naphtali, brought food on donkeys, camels, mules, and oxen, abundant supplies of flour, cakes of figs and raisins, wine, [olive] oil, oxen, and sheep, for there was joy in Israel.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 39They were with David three days - These were the deputies of the different people mentioned here: it is not possible that all the thousands mentioned above could have feasted with David for three days; and yet it appears there was even of these a great number, for the men of Issachar, Zebulun, and Naphtali, who were nearest to this place of rendezvous, had brought all the necessaries for such a feast. From the whole it appears most evident that the great…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 23-40Verses 23-40 When the throne of Christ is set up in a soul, there is, or ought to be, great joy in that soul; and provision is made, not as here, for a few days, but for the whole life, and for eternity. Happy are those who wisely perceive it to be their duty and interest, to submit to the Saviour Jesus Christ, the Son of David; who renounce for his sake all that is not consistent; whose earnest endeavours to do good are directed by the wisdom that God…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 23-40The succession of a king was often a contentious issue, especially when the new king came from a different family. The gathering of all twelve tribes at Hebron, including some of Saul’s relatives (1 Chronicles 12:29), to confirm David’s rule showed that the tribes had resolved their conflicts after Saul’s death (12:23–37). The Chronicler emphasizes the unity among the tribes by stating that they all had the single purpose of making David the king over all…Read the comment
