I attended the funeral. Elder Wilson read important scriptures and made appropriate remarks. The church was full of a mixed company, believers and unbelievers. The Spirit of the Lord came upon me while I was speaking in regard to those who fall asleep in Jesus. I made remarks from (Revelation 20:6): “Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection; on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.” The subduing, melting Spirit of God was upon the entire congregation as I addressed the parents and children of [the one] who lay in her coffin before us. I carried their minds forward to the time when Christ shall come in great glory and then the Lifegiver shall break the fetters of the tomb and all that are in their graves shall hear His voice, and the righteous dead shall come forth to a glorious immortality. The Lord grant this event may be sanctified to the good of the afflicted ones and to every member of the church.

Chapter 33—The First Great Deception

GC88 544.2

In consequence of Adam’s sin, death passed upon the whole human race. All alike go down into the grave. And through the provisions of the plan of salvation, all are to be brought forth from their graves. “There shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust;” [Acts 24:15.] “for as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.” [1 Corinthians 15:22.] But a distinction is made between the two classes that are brought forth. “All that are in the graves shall hear his voice, and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.” [John 5:28, 29.] They who have been “accounted worthy” of the resurrection of life are “blessed and holy.” “On such the second death hath no power.” [Revelation 20:6.] But those who have not, through repentance and faith, secured pardon, must receive the penalty of transgression,—“the wages of sin.” They suffer punishment varying in duration and intensity, “according to their works,” but finally ending in the second death. Since it is impossible for God, consistently with his justice and mercy, to save the sinner in his sins, he deprives him of the existence which his transgressions have forfeited, and of which he has proved himself unworthy. Says an inspired writer, “Yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be; yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be.” And another declares, “They shall be as though they had not been.” [Psalm 37:10; Obadiah 16.] Covered with infamy, they sink into hopeless, eternal oblivion.

Jude refers to the same period: “The angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the Judgment of the great day.” And again he quotes the words of Enoch: “Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, to execute judgment upon all.” [Jude 6, 14, 15.] John declares that he “saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened;” “and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books.” [Revelation 20:12.]

Consider the wondrous power of our God, and then call to mind His love for fallen man. He “so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] How can man, for whom God has done so much, for whom Christ has given His life, continue in his perversity? Can we wonder that at the close of the one thousand years all who have refused to accept Him shall be destroyed with fire from heaven outside the city of God? God declares that this shall be so. [Revelation 20:9.] He says, “Behold, the day of the Lord cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate; and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it. ... And I will punish the world for their evil; and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.” [Isaiah 13:9-11.]

“Forever and ever”

“Forever and ever” *“Scripture’s use of the expression ‘forever and ever’ (Revelation 14:11; 19:3; 20:10) has ... contributed to the conclusion that the process of punishing Satan and the wicked will go on throughout eternity. But like ‘everlasting,’ the object it modifies determines the meaning of the word ‘forever.’ When associated with God, its meaning is absolute—for God is immortal; when associated with mortal humans, its meaning is limited.” Seventh-day Adventists Believe, 3rd ed. Thank God, we have a divine path, marked out for us to follow. The man who has true religion planted in his heart will not be guided by human opinion, but by the verdict of One who is unerring. God’s laws are not uncertain conjectures, but the truth, the decisions of an infallible judge. The very laws which He has made known to His people are the laws by which they are to be tried when they stand before His judgment seat. “And I saw a great white throne,” writes John, “and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heavens fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened, and another book was opened, which is the book of life, and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.” [Revelation 20:11, 12.]

Probationary time is granted us, opportunities and privileges are given us, to make our calling and election sure. How we should prize this precious time, improving every talent God has given, that we may be faithful stewards over ourselves, keeping our souls in the love of God. We must have simple, increasing faith. We are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation, and the soul of man must depend upon God.

1899 has passed into eternity with its burden of record sealed up, to be opened when the judgment shall sit and the books shall be opened. (Revelation 20:11, 12, quoted.) This day I consecrate myself unto God anew. We are privileged as well as summoned to be workers together with Jesus Christ. We are to work out our own salvation with fear and with trembling. For it is God that worketh in us to will and to do of His good pleasure. Ye are not your own, ye are bought with a price, therefore glorify God in your body and your spirit, which are God’s. Why do we falter, Why do we faint, Why do we become discouraged? Our gracious Redeemer has given us from His own lips, “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.” [Philippians 2:5] “If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me.” [Matthew 16:24] Whomsoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, for Christ’s sake, “he cannot be My disciple.” [Luke 14:33] These are the terms of our discipleship in the Christian life. Christ that gave Himself has positively stated the terms of our discipleship. We become His followers when we comply with the terms He has specified. Here is the standard of our duty in the clear light of a perfect authoritative example. Christ Jesus is our only hope. Believe in Him. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus. Christ has explicitly commanded us to follow Him and we shall not walk in darkness. Thank the Lord Jesus.

The record of the books is soon to be opened. The time is at hand when the vision of the prophets is to be fulfilled: “And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.” [Revelation 20:11.] Daniel, speaking of the destruction of earthly kingdoms, says, “In the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever. For as much as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known. ... what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation sure.” [Daniel 2:44, 45.]

It was my last discourse. I have now done what I could and the Lord will do that which I cannot possibly do—water the seed that has been sown. But speaking through a translator loses—taxes me—but when you read the reports they come to you about as they are spoken. Good is done and many testimonies are borne stating the impressions that have been made so that I know my labor has not been in vain in the Lord.

Preparation for the Judgment (Sermon by Mrs. E. G. White June 27, 1886, Orebro, Sweden.)

1SAT 25.1

Revelation 20:11-15. Here is presented before us the great and solemn day when the judgment is to set and the books be opened, and the dead are to be judged according to the things that are written in the books. I have questioned in my mind, as I have seen the people in our cities hurrying to and fro with business, whether they ever thought of the day of God that is just upon us. Every one of us should be living with reference to that great day which is soon to come upon us.

I felt urged to make a most solemn appeal that none should trifle with their soul’s salvation. Eternal interests are to be their first consideration. To do God’s will is to obey His commandments.

Chapter 19—To Teachers

CE 145.1

If a teacher cannot be made to feel the responsibility and the carefulness he should ever reveal in dealing with human minds, his education has in some cases been very defective. In the home life the training has been harmful to the character, and it is a sad thing to reproduce this defective character and management in the children brought under his control. We are standing before God on test and trial to see if we can individually be trusted to be of the number of the family who shall compose the redeemed in heaven. “And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened; which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.” [Revelation 20:12.]

“The dead were judged,” says John, “out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.” [Revelation 20:12.] Angels of God have kept a faithful record of the lives of all, and they are to be judged according to their deeds. In view of this Judgment, Peter exhorted the men of Israel: “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; and he shall send Jesus,” “whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.” [Acts 3:19-21.]

With just as much assurance you may declare the message of God’s truth. Those who believe sacred, eternal truth, must put their whole soul into their efforts. We must be stirred to the very heart as we behold the fulfillment of prophecy in the closing scenes of this earth’s history. As our vision extends still further into the glories of eternity, the coming of Christ with power and great glory, and the scenes of the great day of judgment, we should not remain tame and unmoved. “I saw the dead,” John says, “stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.” [Revelation 20:12.]

A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him; the judgment was set, and the books were opened.” [Daniel 7:9, 10.]

The human agent is a savor of life unto life, or he is a savor of death unto death. He either draws with Christ, or he draws away from Christ. Many have interposed their unconverted souls between Christ and the souls who are of value in His sight, and they will have a serious account to settle by and by with the Owner of souls. John writes: “I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God: and the books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of these things which were written in the books, according to their works.” [Revelation 20:12.] What an account these men will have to settle in the day of final retribution. The unsanctified spirit that prompted their works will be seen in its true character. Their selfish, arbitrary exactions they will see as they appear in the sight of a holy God. Will my brethren and sisters bear in mind that they are dealing with God’s heritage, His purchased possession?

Not a word or a deed will escape their memory. There will be trying times. And while we are not to mourn over the time of trouble to come, let us, as Christ’s followers, search our hearts as with a lighted candle to see what manner of spirit we are of. For our present and eternal good, let us criticize our actions, to see how they stand in the light of the law of God. For this law is our standard. Let every soul search his own heart.

Provoke not the youth to wrath. Stir not up in them, by unjust charges and harsh treatment, the impulse to act rashly. Often those who ought to know how to deal with the youth drive them away from God by injudicious words and actions. God records such treatment of the youth as a sin against himself. Treat the tempted ones in a way that will draw them to you as a friend who will not misjudge or hurt them. The admonitions God has given in His Word are infinitely better than any words of reproof you can speak. Lead the youth to see that it is for their eternal good to follow the path the Lord has marked out for them. Tell them they must not sin, because it grieves the heart of the Redeemer. Tell them to fear to sin, because the wages of sin is death. In gentleness and love try to inspire in them an earnest purpose to do their whole duty to God and to their fellow men. Remember that the future experience of these youth will bear the stamp of the teaching you have given them.

Oh, the worth of the soul! It cannot be estimated by you, Arthur and Rosetta, because you have not cultivated a sense of the great sacrifice made by the Son of God to save the soul from eternal ruin. You do not realize the abhorrence which the Lord has for sin. The prophet says, “I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. ... And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” [Revelation 20:12, 15.] “Righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne.” [Psalm 97:2.]

Friday Elder Daniells and Willie came from Melbourne. I had not seen Willie for two and a half months. I was glad to meet him but he was not well. I was solicited to talk a short time to the neighbors, which I did, and I had much freedom and was blessed of the Lord. But when speaking even to the few, the value of the soul urges itself upon me so that I cannot but feel an intense interest as I think of the judgment. “And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works ... And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” [Revelation 20:12, 15.]

You must compare your character with the great moral standard of righteousness, God’s holy law. If the character will not bear the comparison to that law now, how will it stand the test of the judgment? “And I saw the dead, small and great stand before God, and the books were opened. And another book was opened which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books according to their works.” “And whosoever were not found written in the book of life were cast into the lake of fire.” [Revelation 20:12, 15.]

Your reputation is at stake. Day by day the record of your words, your actions, and your influence is being made in the books of heaven. This you will one day meet. “I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened, and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. ... And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” [Revelation 20:12, 15.] In that great day will you be pleased to meet the record that you have made while at this school?

Time, with its burden of record, is passing into eternity. “I saw the dead small and great stand before God,” John writes; “and the books were opened, and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them, and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life, was cast into the lake of fire.” [Revelation 20:12-15.]

The powers from beneath are working with intensity of effort. Soon will come the time when God will discern between him that serveth God and him that serveth Him not. Soon will come the time of which John writes: “I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. Patriarchs and Prophets

Chapter 41—Apostasy at the Jordan

PP 461.1

Israel’s sin at Beth-peor brought the judgments of God upon the nation, and though the same sins may not now be punished as speedily, they will as surely meet retribution. “If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy.” 1 Corinthians 3:17. Nature has affixed terrible penalties to these crimes—penalties which, sooner or later, will be inflicted upon every transgressor. It is these sins more than any other that have caused the fearful degeneracy of our race, and the weight of disease and misery with which the world is cursed. Men may succeed in concealing their transgression from their fellow men, but they will no less surely reap the result, in suffering, disease, imbecility, or death. And beyond this life stands the tribunal of the judgment, with its award of eternal penalties. “They which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God,” but with Satan and evil angels shall have their part in that “lake of fire” which “is the second death.” Galatians 5:21; Revelation 20:14.

I feel a deep interest that you shall abide the day of God. [Read] Revelation 20:15. Your greatest sorrow has not been because you have had a true sense of your sins, but you have been very much annoyed because the sin has caused you much humiliation because it was known. If there is nothing which you have done that is so wrong, why should you feel so greatly annoyed to have this matter revealed. The aggravated character of your sin you have not realized, and felt a real sorrow and disgust of your own course of action. My brother, in your present state of mind, with your present conceptions of this matter, when placed in similar circumstances as you have been, temptations would come to you, and habit and practice would lead you to pursue the same course of action if you thought it would not be made known to others. But if no eye could see or know of these polluting actions, which you have taken so much pleasure in, you would continue their practice because you have no true conception of their results.
