Just before our Saviour left this earth, he commissioned His disciples to go into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe: In My name they shall cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” [Mark 16:16-18.] “Behold, I send the promise of My Father upon you; but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem until ye be endued with power from on high.” [Luke 24:49.] Power to do what? To preach the gospel and proclaim the conditions of salvation.Mark 16:16-20

God uses human instrumentalities to communicate His will to those who need help. By preaching and reading and praying, a constant communication is to be kept up between earth and heaven. To His disciples and to us Christ gave the commission: “Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you, and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:19, 20.] “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. “So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God; and they went forth and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following.” [Verses 19, 20.] The preaching of the gospel is the Lord’s great method of saving souls. All other methods are to be united with this as the arms are united with the body. The pulpit and the press are to unite in the work of winning souls to Christ. The work must not be centralized in the large cities. The standard of the gospel is to be planted in every town and city and country. The glad tidings that eternal life is offered to all are to be carried to the perishing, in harmony with the divine command.Mark 16:17

By his work, the converted, consecrated canvasser is sowing the seeds of truth. This work must be done without delay, for we have but a short time in which to work. I have been improving in health and yet I am not strong, but I am thankful that we have a God in whom we can trust. I can say to you, The Lord Jesus is the mighty Healer. Just lay hold of His power which is back of the promises. The Lord would have you to live and not die. Put your entire heart in this: “I shall not die, but live to declare the works of the Lord.” [Psalm 118:17.] Let your heart lean on the Healer. Tell the Lord all about the matter. He said, “These signs shall follow them that believe.” [Mark 16:17.] Expect the Lord will work miracles; hold fast, be strong, yea, be strong.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 15 (1900)

Christ assured His disciples that after His ascension He would send them a gift. What was the gift that was deemed worthy of His inauguration in the heavenly courts? The Holy Spirit, sent to enlighten, convert, and sanctify the soul. God would give all gifts in one; therefore He sent the Holy Spirit. Then why should not we expect the fulfillment of this promise, “These signs shall follow them that believe?” [Mark 16:17.] Why do we not look for the gift of God in its fulness?Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

We are to get out of self, and abide in Christ. Then much more good will be done to the souls and bodies of those who have need to be healed of their infirmities. “These signs shall follow those that believe.” [Mark 16:17.] As the time of Christ’s labor upon this earth grew shorter, His work became more intense, His energies were called out, and there seemed to be no limit to His work. Thus it will be with every true worker. The failures of the year 1898 cannot now be repaired; but we may now prepare for the coming year 1899. We may make such a consecration of self to God that the Holy Spirit will control the whole man. We may redeem the time and redouble our earnest, sanctified exertions. Wherever Christ’s cause has a claim, wherever God’s people have necessities to be met, there our obligation begins. We are responsible to God for all the good we can do. We are to encourage gratitude, praise, and thanksgiving, not allowing our minds to become Satan’s workshop to create dissension and strife; for this is the foundation of so much weakness and so little of the real, genuine working of the Spirit of God in our churches. The Lord invites us to look to Him, to trust in Him, to walk with Him, to talk with Him, to keep step with Him. Then duty will be clear before us. The Lord can use pure, unselfish, holy hearts to His own name’s glory.Mark 16:17-18

The Spirit of Prophecy
1SP 8.2
The Christian age commenced with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, and the manifestation of various spiritual gifts. Among these was the gift of prophecy. After commissioning his disciples to go into all the world and preach the gospel, Jesus says to them, “And these signs shall follow them that believe: In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; theyshall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover,” Mark 16:17, 18. On the day of pentecost, when the Christian dispensation was fully opened, some of these gifts were manifested in a wonderful manner. Acts 2:1-11. Luke, in giving account of his travels with Paul and others, when a quarter of a century of the Christian age had already passed, after speaking of entering into the house of Philip, the evangelist, says: “And the same man had four daughters, virgins, which did prophesy. And as we tarried there many days, there came down from Judea a certain prophet, named Agabus.” Acts 21:9, 10. Again, still later, we see the beloved John, in the Isle of Patmos, imbued with the spirit of prophecy in all its fullness. The wonderful Revelation was given unto him when more than half a century of the Christian age had passed. And here the New-Testament record leaves us without a single intimation that the gifts of the Spirit should cease from the church till the day of glory should be ushered in by the second appearing of Jesus Christ. From Heaven With Love
The Holy Spirit Makes Their Work Effective

Through the Holy Spirit, the disciples’ testimony was to be confirmed by signs and wonders. Miracles were to be wrought not only by the apostles, but by those who received their message. “In My name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” Mark 16:17, 18.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

This is the privilege of God’s children, and faith should lay hold of all that it is possible to have as an endorsement of faith. “These signs shall follow them that believe.” [Verse 17.] Why do we not present the sick and suffering before God in the arms of our faith? Why do we not teach them to believe in the great Healer? Why do we not lay hold on the promises, bringing the sick to God, and praying for relief, for the healing power of God to be revealed? The world is enshrouded in the darkness of error. Satan and his angels are urging on their warfare against the truth. We must have help. But the help we need will not come from human beings. We must look to Him who has said, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.” [Matthew 28:18-20.] “These signs shall follow them that believe: In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” [Mark 16:17, 18.] “And lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 19 (1904)

Physical healing is bound up with the gospel commission. When Christ sent His disciples out on their first missionary journey, He bade them, “As ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.” Matthew 10:7, 8. And when at the close of His earthly ministry He gave them their commission, He said, “These signs shall follow them that believe; In My name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” Mark 16:17, 18.Early Writings

R. Mackin: The Lord has given us power, Sister White, to cast out demons. Many people are possessed with demons. I remember a statement you wrote a few years ago, that many were possessed with demons as verily as they were in the days of Christ. When we are in a meeting, and these demons are in a meeting, they may cause people to do queer things. I notice in the Bible, when Jesus was in the temple, that demons at once came out. “Hold thy peace, and come out of him.” [Mark 1:25.] The Lord instructs us to lay the people down, lest the demons throw them when they come out. We found in the beginning that when we begin to rebuke these demons, that they often times close the eyes of these people, and will sometimes cause them to bark like a dog, and stick out their tongue; but as we continue to rebuke them, why, the eyes open, and they become calm, and the demons—Now it is through the gift of the Spirit that the Lord tells us when the demons are gone, that they are all gone; and so we have said—one lady in particular, she had six demons, and she said she just felt them when they came out—it just seemed to pull her in every part of the body; but our brethren say that they can’t be in the last days; but we find that it coincides with just what the Saviour said in the last chapter of Mark, in that great commission: “And these signs shall follow them that believe: in My name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;” and so on. How shall the Lord’s work be done? In every place that is entered, a solid foundation is to be laid for permanent work. The Lord’s methods are to be followed. It is not for you to be intimidated by outward appearances, however forbidding they may be. It is for you to carry forward the work as the Lord has said that it should be carried forward. Preach the Word, and the Lord by His Holy Spirit will send conviction to the minds of the hearers. The word is, “And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following.” (Mark 16:20.)Mark 16:18

The Lord’s promise, “They shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover,” Mark 16:18, is just as trustworthy now as in the days of the apostles. It presents the privilege of God’s children, and our faith should lay hold of all that it embraces. Christ’s servants are the channel of His working, and through them He desires to exercise His healing power. It is our work to present the sick and suffering to God in the arms of our faith. The Lord Jesus will work miracles for His people. In the sixteenth of Mark we read: “So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, He was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirmed the word with signs following.” Verses 19, 20. Here we are assured that the Lord was qualifying His chosen servants to take up medical missionary work after His ascension.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

We do not propose to colonize, to build up strong centers to the neglect of other fields. But we are to enlarge the circle of our operations, as those who believe they are giving the last message of warning to the world, as Christ gave to His disciples just before His ascension (Matthew 28:19, 20; Mark 16:19, 20). God’s professed people in America should have been awake to do this work. In the place of centering so many interests in Battle Creek, plants should have been made in city after city. CH 498.1
Of the disciples after Christ’s ascension we read, “They went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following.” Mark 16:20. Luke is called the “beloved physician.” He labored in connection with Paul in Philippi, and when Paul left that place Luke stayed, doing double service as a physician and a gospel minister. He was indeed a medical missionary, and his medical skill opened the way for the gospel to reach many hearts.Testimonies for the Church, vol. 9

The Lord has repeatedly told you, Edson, that He has laid upon you the burden of opening the Word of God to your fellow men. In the humble and intelligent performance of this work is the assurance of acceptance with God. His Word is, “Go, ... teach all nations;” and to the command is added the promise, “Lo, I am with you alway.” [Matthew 28:19, 20.] The Lord requires of us nothing that He does not give us power to perform. The disciples obeyed the command to bear witness for Christ, and of their experience we read: “They went forth and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following.” [Mark 16:20.] To you as well as to the disciples these words may be spoken.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

By the printed page, the light reaches the isolated ones who have no opportunity to hear the living preachers. This is most blessed missionary work. Introduction
PP 23.1
On the Day of Pentecost the disciples were thus endued with power from on high. But this promise of Christ’s was not, any more than the prophecy of Joel, confined to that occasion. For He gave them the same promise in another form by assuring them that He would be with them always, even to the end of the world. Matthew 28:20. Mark tells us in what sense and what manner the Lord was to be with them. He says, “And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following.” Mark 16:20. And Peter, on the Day of Pentecost, testified concerning the perpetuity of this operation of the Spirit which they had witnessed. When the convicted Jews said unto the apostles, “What shall we do?” Peter answered, “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.” Acts 2:37-39. This certainly provides for the operation of the Holy Spirit in the church, even in its special manifestations, to all coming time, as long as mercy shall invite men to accept the pardoning love of Christ.Reflecting Christ

“And they went forth and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following.” [Mark 16:20.] The doing of the Lord’s work cannot but require an increased expenditure of means. Success in any mission necessarily means support, and brings increased responsibilities and liabilities, in order to increase and widen the work. But souls are converted to the truth, and these return the means invested. Mission work must not cease because of limited means. Let every church member practice self-denial. The Word of God gives the commission, “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” [Verse 15.] There is no restriction, no limit, to the work. All that men enjoy they receive from the Lord’s great firm, and He is pleased to have His heritage enjoy His goods; but with all who stand under the bloodstained banner of Prince Emmanuel He has made a special contract that they show their dependence upon God and their accountability to Him by returning to the treasury a certain portion as His own. This is to be invested in supporting the missionary work which must be done to fulfill the commission given by the Son of God just before He left His disciples: “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. The word is, “And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following.” [Mark 16:20.] The other workers are to act their part, doing house-to-house work, giving Bible readings in families. They are to show their growth in grace by their submission to the will of Christ. Thus they will gain a rich experience. As in faith they receive, believe, and obey Christ’s words, the efficiency of the Holy Spirit will be seen in their life-work. There will be seen an intensity of earnest effort. There will be cherished faith that works by love and purifies the soul. The fruit of the Spirit will appear in the life.16LtMs, Lt 195, 1901, par. 11

Mark’s testimony is, “And He said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” Mark 16:15. There is a home missionary work to do, to set the truth in clear lines before those who are not impressed. We are to be interested in “every creature.” “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe: In My name shall they cast out devils: They shall speak with new tongues. They shall take up serpents; and if they shall drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” Verses 16-18.18LtMs, Ms 185, 1903, par. 14
“They shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” [Verse 18.] God will hear the prayers offered in behalf of all who would give back the glory to Him. Oh, there might be hundreds of prayers offered for the sick in every place, and they would be healed if the hearts of the sick were humbled and meek, so they would not be spoiled by this great manifestation of the goodness and love of God. If the Lord saw that if healed by the immediate power of God, the ones thus blessed would remain humble and would use the gift given them and not become exalted, many would be healed of bodily suffering. Thus let all learn that Christ has invited them to learn of Him His meekness, His lowliness of heart, that the Lord may work by His Holy Spirit upon their bodies and thus show the immediate power of God through living faith.18LtMs, Ms 185, 1903, par. 17
But now the commission is enlarged. They have the world open before them as their field of labor. They are authorized to go into all the world, to the people nigh and afar off, and to preach the gospel to the inhabited world. “Preach the gospel to every creature” that has reasoning faculties to understand it. [Verse 15.] Christ is to be preached—His history, His life of condescension, His sufferings, and His love that is without a parallel. We dwell too little upon this subject.18LtMs, Ms 185, 1903, par. 21

This promise cannot be restricted to the lifetime of the chosen twelve, nor to the Christians of the first century, for it extends to the end of the world [aion] age. “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world,” to the end of the Christian age. If it be said that the Jewish age is her meant, we reply, that dispensation closed with the death of Christ, forty-two days before this commission was given. We give two passages as proof. Colossians 2:14. “Blotting out the hand-writing of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross.” Daniel 9:27. “In the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and oblation to cease.” This prophecy was fulfilled at the death of the Messiah, in the middle of the last of the seventy weeks. There the Jewish typical sacrifices ceased to be of any virtue, when the great antitypical sacrifice was offered. Christ gave this commission just before His ascension, Mark 16:19, which was at least forty-two days after His crucifixion.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

Now how shall the state of things be broken up? [Read] Mark 16:15-18. “So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be dammed. And these signs shall follow them that believe: In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” [Mark 16:15-18.] These words are to be literally fulfilled. This is the work the Lord Jesus Christ will do through His appointed agencies. “So then, after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. And they went forth and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following.” [Verses 19, 20.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

The formation of the Christian church, and the union of all that it embraces, and preserving the consecration of all its powers as the appointed agencies of God, for the spiritual recovery of the moral image of God in man, was the object of Christ’s assuming human nature. Christ was the foundation of the whole Jewish economy, which was the symbol prescribed in type for the religious faith and obedience of all people. The Lord is not pleased with the indifference in recognizing the sacredness of the service of God, when the sample of what a church should be in all its instrumentality, its entire consecration in service, with a decided spirituality and zeal and exactitude in all service concerning the worship of God and exalted religious privileges, are to be treated in far greater reverence in all service; since we have the example of the great Founder of all the religious economy, should not we as a Christian people, in all our religious Christian worship, take in the lessons given and express a greater devotedness, which God requires in all who believe in Christ as type has met antitype in the giving of Himself to die on Calvary’s cross? His resurrection from the dead, His full and ample promise to His disciples just before His ascension to heaven escorted by the heavenly throng in triumph to the city of God, we now have assurance of a living Saviour, our Advocate in the heavenly courts, and the promise made (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-20; Luke 24:44-53).Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

A mightier power than any power of earth works with those who give themselves unreservedly to the Lord. As they go forth with Him as their Companion, learning at every step how to reveal His meekness and lowliness, depending on Him for strength and efficiency, they receive power to do His work. To every consecrated, unselfish worker who goes forth realizing that he has a responsibility and an individuality of his own, and that Christ will supply his need, the promise is fulfilled, “Ye shall receive power.” [Acts 1:8.] Of such workers, as of the first disciples, it is said, “And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following.” [Mark 16:20.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 18 (1903)

Christ instructed them in regard to the work they were to carry on in the earth, according to the example He had set them in His ministry. He said unto them, “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; in My name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
