God has sent His Son to communicate His own life to humanity. Christ declares, “I live by the Father,” My life and His being one. [Verse 57.] “No man has seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.” [John 1:18.] “For as the Father hath life in himself, so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; and hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.” [John 5:26, 27.] The head of every man is Christ, as the head of Christ is God. “And ye are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s.” [1 Corinthians 3:23.]John 5:27

What an assurance also that He will be a righteous, just, and compassionate judge. He who has measured the power of every subtle temptation of man’s cruel foe, who has borne every weakness to which man is subject, He who is a Brother in our infirmities,—will He not deal justly and tenderly with the soul that His own blood has been poured out to save? This is a most beautiful day. At 2 p.m. there was an imposing procession that passed by doing honor to a gentleman that died very suddenly. There was a band, and over one hundred men marching two and two. He is laid away in his narrow earth home to rest until the morning of the resurrection. “The hour is coming, in the which all that are in their graves ... shall come forth,” the righteous in the first resurrection, and the wicked in the second. [John 5:28, 29.] This is a solemn thought. Oh that my life may be hid with Christ in God, that when He who is my life shall appear, I also may appear with Him in glory.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 20 (1905)

In your letter you refer to what was said concerning the recovery of Mrs. Stuttaford’s mother at the time of her last illness. It was this way: We had a season of prayer in her behalf, and I tried to encourage faith in the sick mother. I told her that there was no power in us to do the work of healing, but that it was her privilege to say, I shall not die, but live; and that she could keep in her mind the promise, He is able to save to the uttermost all who come unto Him. I tried to talk on the faith side of the question and encourage her to believe that living or dying we are the Lord’s, and we shall live with Him in His kingdom. “For the trumpet shall sound, and all that are in their graves shall come forth”—those who have served Him, to live in His kingdom. GC 544.2
In consequence of Adam’s sin, death passed upon the whole human race. All alike go down into the grave. And through the provisions of the plan of salvation, all are to be brought forth from their graves. “There shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust;” “for as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.” Acts 24:15; 1 Corinthians 15:22. But a distinction is made between the two classes that are brought forth. “All that are in the graves shall hear His voice, and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.” John 5:28, 29. They who have been “accounted worthy” of the resurrection of life are “blessed and holy.” “On such the second death hath no power.” Revelation 20:6. But those who have not, through repentance and faith, secured pardon, must receive the penalty of transgression—“the wages of sin.” They suffer punishment varying in duration and intensity, “according to their works,” but finally ending in the second death. Since it is impossible for God, consistently with His justice and mercy, to save the sinner in his sins, He deprives him of the existence which his transgressions have forfeited and of which he has proved himself unworthy. Says an inspired writer: “Yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be.” And another declares: “They shall be as though they had not been.” Psalm 37:10; Obadiah 16. We arise early, about six. We walk to the cemetery. They have large grounds kept in an excellent condition. Flowers were upon every grave, and the grounds were varied. There were hills and rocks and steep rises of grounds, and as we looked at the city of the dead we were carried forward to that hour when “all that are in their graves shall ... come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, to the resurrection of damnation.” [John 5:28, 29.] How many will burst the fetters of the tomb and rise in immortal vigor, trampling over death and the grave? Instead of apologizing for the act of which they complained, or explaining His purpose in doing it, Jesus turned upon the rulers, and the accused became the accuser. He rebuked them for the hardness of their hearts, and their ignorance of the Scriptures. He declared that they had rejected the word of God, inasmuch as they had rejected Him whom God had sent. “Ye search the Scriptures, because ye think that in them ye have eternal life; and these are they which bear witness of Me” (John 5:39, R. Jesus and the disciples were on the way to Gethsemane, at the foot of Mount Olivet. The moon was shining brightly and revealed to Him a flourishing grapevine. Drawing the attention of His disciples to it, Jesus said, “I am the true vine.” The vine with its clinging tendrils represents Himself. The palm tree, the cedar, and the oak stand alone; they require no support. But the vine entwines about the trellis, and thus climbs heavenward. GW92 376.2
The warfare against self is the greatest battle that was ever fought. The yielding of self, surrendering all to the will of God, and being clothed with humility, possessing that love that is pure, peaceable, and easy to be entreated, full of gentleness and good fruits, is not an easy attainment.... The soul must submit to God before it can be renewed in knowledge and true holiness. The holy life and character of Christ is a faithful example. His confidence in his heavenly Father was unlimited. His obedience and submission were unreserved and perfect. He came not to be ministered unto, but to minister to others. He came not to do his own will, but the will of Him that sent him. In all things he submitted himself to Him that judgeth righteously. From the lips of the Saviour of the world were heard these words, “I can of mine own self do nothing.” [John 5:30.]Gospel Workers (1915 ed.)

We can receive of heaven’s light only as we are willing to be emptied of self. We can discern the character of God, and accept Christ by faith, only as we consent to the bringing into captivity of every thought to the obedience of Christ. And to all who do this, the Holy Spirit is given without measure. In Christ “dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. This church cannot present the divine credentials that her doctrines and authority are of God. She does not say “The ... works that I do, bear witness of me” (John 5:36); and “If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not” (John 10:37). Taking the name of Lutheran, she refers back to Luther, his works, his testimony, and while she has not cherished his spirit as a Reformer she reckons herself as the only lawful inheritor of the blessings God has promised to His church, as did the Jews. But she has turned away from the holy commandment, refused to walk in the brighter path of truth that would have renewed her knowledge and true holiness and given her the victory over the world. She is sitting in darkness and her condemnation is great in proportion as the grace and truth proffered her were abundant and powerful....The Upward Look

This church cannot present the divine credentials that her doctrines and authority are of God. She does not say, “The works that I do bear witness of me” (John 5:36); and “If I do not the works of My Father, believe Me not.” John 10:37. Taking the name of Lutheran, she refers back to Luther, his works, his testimony; and while she has not cherished his spirit as a reformer, she reckons herself as the only lawful inheritor of the blessings God has promised to His church, as did the Jews. But she has turned away from the holy commandment, refused to walk in the brighter path of truth that would have renewed her knowledge and true holiness and given her the victory over the world. She is sitting in darkness, and her condemnation is great in proportion as the grace and truth proffered her were abundant and powerful.John 5:38

Study carefully the first chapter of Hebrews. Become interested in the Scriptures. Read and study them diligently. “In them ye think ye have eternal life,” Christ said, “and they are they which testify of me.” [John 5:39.] It means everything to us to have an experimental and individual knowledge of God and of Jesus Christ, “whom he hath sent.” [Verse 38.] “For this is life eternal, that they might know thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” [John 17:3.]John 5:39

Jesus said of the Old Testament Scriptures—and how much more it is true of the New—“They are they which testify of me” (John 5:39).... If you would become acquainted with the Saviour, study the Holy Scriptures. Fill the whole heart with the words of God. They are the living water, quenching your burning thirst. They are the living bread from heaven.... Our bodies are built up from what we eat and drink; and as in the natural economy, so in the spiritual economy: it is what we meditate upon that will give tone and strength to our spiritual nature.24Steps to Christ, 87, 88.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 18 (1903)

Much is comprehended in these six verses. We need not only to read the Word of life, but prayerfully to study the Word, that we may present the truth in the right manner to unbelievers. The light we receive from the Word of God we are to impart to others, that they may become interested in the study of the Scriptures. “Search the Scriptures,” said Christ, “for in them ye think ye have eternal life.” [John 5:39.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 18 (1903)

We shall have to meet seducing spirits. We shall be tried and tested on every point. Let us stand firm in the position defined for us as a people by the Lord God of Israel. Let us hold fast the beginning of our confidence firm unto the end. “Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life, and they are they which testify of Me.” [John 5:39.] Do not remove the landmarks that have been established by the Holy Spirit’s witness. He who inspired the Scriptures will test everything in our religious life by the Scriptures. “To the law and to the testimony; if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” [Isaiah 8:20.] Even the work of the Spirit within is tested and tried by the Word. Some will claim that they have the Holy Spirit’s guidance, when in reality they are guided by another spirit, which the Word will not vindicate. The sum must be proved. Those who claim to have the Holy Spirit must be tested by a “Thus saith the Lord.” The written Word is to decide all questions.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 18 (1903)

Some say one thing and some say another. There are those who say that Sister White does not object to our having a college in Battle Creek. Until Sister White herself makes this statement, do not believe it. To those who know the messages from the Lord, I would say, “Hold fast; for soon all will be fulfilled. The Word of God does not repress activity, but guides us aright, pointing out sanctified methods for the accomplishment of the work that is to save souls. It presents to us a work that if done faithfully will make us worthy of the immortal inheritance. God knows exactly what each man needs to enable him to rise in moral value. He puts the Bible into his hands—a light that is not to be ignored or set aside as of no special importance. “Search the Scriptures,” Christ says, “for in them ye think ye have eternal life, and they are they which testify of Me.” [John 5:39.] The Word of God tells man how he may become an heir of God and a joint heir with Christ to an immortal inheritance. Knowing that it is man’s nature to accumulate and amass, God in His Word reveals to him the unsearchable riches, an inexhaustible treasure. Knowing that man’s strongest impulse is to stand on vantage ground before all, God points out to him an ambition that he may safely cherish. “I will make a man more precious than fine gold,” He declares, “even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir.” [Isaiah 13:12.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 18 (1903)

The Importance of Bible Study
GW92 123.2
Of all men upon the face of the earth, those who are handling solemn truths for these perilous times should understand their Bibles, and become acquainted with the evidences of our faith. Unless they possess a knowledge of the word of life, they have no right to undertake to instruct others in the way to life. Ministers should give all diligence to add to their “faith, virtue; and to virtue, knowledge; and to knowledge, temperance; and to temperance, patience; and to patience, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, charity,” [2 Peter 1:5-7.] Some of our ministers graduate when they have scarcely learned the first principles of the doctrine of Christ. Those who are ambassadors for Christ, who stand in his stead, beseeching souls to be reconciled to God, should be qualified to present our faith intelligently, and be able to give the reasons of their hope with meekness and fear. Christ said, “Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life; and they are they which testify of me.” [John 5:39.]GW92 124.2
The Master requires all his servants to improve upon the talents he has committed to them. But how much more will he require of those who profess to understand the way of life, and who take upon themselves the responsibility of guiding others therein. The apostle Paul exhorted Timothy: “Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.” [John 5:39.]—Testimonies for the Church 2:337.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 19 (1904)

During the night season I have listened to words that are of the deepest importance to me. Who by searching can find out God to perfection? The gospels set forth the character of Christ as infinitely perfect. I wish I could speak of this so that the whole world could hear the object of Christ’s mission and work; but Infinity alone can do this work. Read and search the Scriptures, in which Christ is set forth as the divine object of our faith. When finite man, under the influence of satanic agencies, comes to question the words of the One who is called, “Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” [Isaiah 9:6], his conceptions of himself increase and his conceptions of Christ and God decrease. “Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life, and they are they which testify of Me.” [John 5:39.] The sufferings of the Redeemer, the humility of His human-divine character, are not understood, and therefore His virtues are not practiced. Earnest searching of the Scriptures, with a sincere desire to understand the truth, will receive a sure reward. An occasional glance into the Word is not enough. An occasional prayer is not enough. “Search the Scriptures,” Christ said; “for in them ye think ye have eternal life, and they are they which testify of Me.” [John 5:39.] Make the Bible the man of your counsel. Only thus can you gain strength to overcome. Let your light shine forth in clear, constant, distinct rays. An occasional service done for the Master is not enough. If you remain servants of sin, the result of the consequence will rest upon you; but you have had the light. We are not to turn from the One mighty in counsel to ask guidance of men and to be their servants. Let those who are inclined to do this read and receive the Bible as the Oracles of God. The Bible is the voice of God to His people. As we study the Living Oracles, we are to remember that God is speaking to His people out of His Word. We are to make this Word the man of our counsel. If we only realized the importance of studying the Scriptures, how much more diligently we would study them. “Search the Scriptures,” Christ said; “for in them ye think ye have eternal life, and they are they which testify of Me.” [John 5:39.] With what awe we would take the inspired Word and with earnest desire search its pages, beginning a new life of genuine experience in the things of God. We must keep this Scripture in view. If people ever need to understand what their duty is, it is best for them to search the Scriptures, for in them we “think we have eternal life, and they are they which testify of Me,” says Christ. [John 5:39.] We will be without any manner of excuse if found deficient at last, because the Lord wants us to come into sacred relation to Himself, and it is possible for us to do so. And if it is possible for us to come into sacred relation to Jesus Christ, we, by beholding His life and character, shall come to be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 25 (1910 - 1915)

“Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life, and they are they which testify of Me.” [John 5:39.] We believe in Christ, and every enterprise that we enter upon, every school or sanitarium that we establish, is to be conducted along the lines that He has laid down. No departure from Christ’s teachings is to be passed over indifferently. He gave His precious life to save souls who are perishing for need of a Saviour. O that it were in the hearts of all who have heard and received the words of truth to live the truth as it is in Jesus. All who take part in the work of the Lord are to be lead and guided by Him. Every human ambition is to be merged in Christ. Our trust is to be in the One who is head over all things. The cross must occupy the central place; for “God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 25 (1910 - 1915)

But the shepherds of the flock, instead of accepting the message, begin to search the Scriptures diligently to find something by which to condemn the serious, searching warnings from God’s Word. They refuse to pay any attention to the last messages of warning that are to be given to the world, but seek to resist everything that does not vindicate their church as being what it should be. They use all the argumentative powers of the mind and reason with the greatest possible positiveness and force from their own conclusions. They refuse to hear or to search the Scriptures for themselves in order to see if there is not light and evidence in God’s Word that would lead them to make changes in their doctrinal views so as to be in harmony with God’s truth. “Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of Me.” John 5:39.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 25 (1910 - 1915)

Bible truth is to be presented in short articles made intensely interesting. “Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life” (John 5:39). I have sometimes thought that text strangely worded, but it is all clear now. Think on what you read, for in the Scriptures “ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me” Ibid. .Manuscript Releases, vol. 11 [Nos. 851-920]

As our physical life is sustained by food, so our spiritual life is sustained by the word of God. And every soul is to receive life from God’s word for himself. As we must eat for ourselves in order to receive nourishment, so we must receive the word for ourselves. From the Scriptures there is the very instruction you need. “Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of Me” (John 5:39).Manuscript Releases, vol. 14 [Nos. 1081-1135]

Here is where many are led into by-and forbidden paths. The human is so mixed with the divine declarations that fables are taught as truth. Turn to God and to your Bibles, and learn the true standard of Christian character. “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of Me” (John 5:39). Hear the words of the Great Teacher, “Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden” (Matthew 11:28). “Unto Me”; bring everything to Jesus, make Him your dependence, make Him your trust. He says, “Learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light” (Matthew 11:29, 30).Manuscript Releases, vol. 1 [Nos. 19-96]

“Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me” (John 5:39). A neglect to feed the hunger of the soul leaves it weak and strengthless, unable to do the will of God. The life of such a one is like the barren fig tree, destitute of fruit. Rely upon no human being for words of comfort. Seek the Lord most earnestly, while you read His rich promises and apply them. Then you will not be consumers but providers.Christ Triumphant

In His teachings while personally among men Jesus directed the minds of the people to the Old Testament. He said to the Jews, “Ye search the Scriptures, because ye think that in them ye have eternal life; and these are they which bear witness of Me.” John 5:39, R.V. At this time the books of the Old Testament were the only part of the Bible in existence. Again the Son of God declared, “They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.” And He added, “If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.” Luke 16:29, 31.Reflecting Christ

I was shown that we must give no encouragement to these demonstrations, but must guard the people with a decided testimony against that which would bring a stain upon the name of Seventh-day Adventists, and destroy the confidence of the people in the message of truth which they must bear to the world. The Lord has done a great work for His people in placing them on vantage ground. It is the duty of the church to cherish its influence. Precious are the words, “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me” (John 5:39). The world’s Redeemer has said, “Search the scriptures” (John 5:39). In them is laid open the bounteous provisions for human necessities, and the strongest motives are set forth to influence to repentance and obedience. Here the seeker for truth may read, contemplate, and be stirred to the very depths of his being by that which a good and gracious God has done and is continually doing for him. He will be amazed that he should ever have treated with indifference the marvelous love and pardon proffered, for in redeeming man, God gave the greatest gift that He could offer. And if the objects of so great a love neglect salvation, there is nothing that Heaven can do more in their behalf....The Faith I Live By

Many who claim to believe and to teach the gospel ... set aside the Old Testament Scriptures, of which Christ declared, “They are they which testify of me.” John 5:39. In rejecting the Old, they virtually reject the New; for both are parts of an inseparable whole. No man can rightly present the law of God without the gospel, or the gospel without the law. The law is the gospel embodied, and the gospel is the law unfolded. The law is the root, the gospel is the fragrant blossom and fruit which it bears.98Christ’s Object Lessons, 128.The Faith I Live By

No man, woman, or youth can attain to Christian perfection and neglect the study of the Word of God. By carefully and closely searching His Word we shall obey the injunction of Christ, “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.” John 5:39. This search enables the student to observe closely the divine Model.... The Pattern must be inspected often and closely in order to imitate it. As one becomes acquainted with the history of the Redeemer, he discovers in himself defects of character; his unlikeness to Christ is so great that he sees he cannot be a follower without a very great change in his life. Still he studies, with a desire to be like his great Exemplar; he catches the looks, the spirit, of his beloved Master; by beholding he becomes changed.19Counsels on Sabbath School Work, 17.The Upward Look

It is of little advantage to skim over the surface of the Scriptures. If we would understand fully the words of Christ, thought must be brought into the searching of the Scriptures. We should open the Scriptures with great reverence, and not in a slothful, lazy manner. The word of Christ is spirit and life to the receiver. The words of Christ to the Pharisees were, “[Ye] search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me” (John 5:39). They were searching the Scriptures for evidence of Christ’s appearing, gathering up every evidence in regard to the manner in which they supposed He would come, while Christ was in their midst, and they did not discern Him by the use of faith....Christian Education
Chapter 9—The Treasure with Which to Store the Mind
CE 80.1
The Bible has been placed in the background, while the sayings of great men, so-called, have been taken in its stead. May the Lord forgive us the slight we have put upon his word. Though inestimable treasures are in the Bible, and it is like a mine full of precious ore, it is not valued, it is not searched, and its riches are not discovered. Mercy and truth and love are valuable beyond our power to calculate; we cannot have too great a supply of these treasures, and it is in the word of God we find out how we may become possessors of these heavenly riches, and yet why is it that the word of God is uninteresting to many professed Christians? Is it because the word of God is not spirit and is not life? Has Jesus put upon us an uninteresting task, when he commands us to “search the Scriptures”? [John 5:39.] Jesus says, “The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit and they are life.” [John 6:63.] But spiritual things are spiritually discerned, and the reason of your lack of interest is that you lack the Spirit of God. When the heart is brought into harmony with the word, a new life will spring up within you, a new light will shine upon every line of the word, and it will become the voice of God to your soul. In this way you will take celestial observations, and know whither you are going, and be able to make the most of your privileges today. To Be Like Jesus

The subject of Christ’s teaching and preaching was the Word of God. He met questioners with a plain “It is written.” “What saith the Scriptures?” “How readest thou?” At every opportunity, when an interest was awakened by either friend or foe, He sowed the seed of the Word. He who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, Himself the living Word, points to the Scriptures, saying, “They are they which testify of me” (John 5:39). And “beginning at Moses and all the prophets,” He opened to His disciples “in all the scriptures the things concerning himself” (Luke 24:27).Ye Shall Receive Power

Do we consider from day to day that a record is going up to heaven of all our actions here? If we would take heed to our ways, and if we would have the fear of God before us, our lives would be far better than they are today. We are here as probationers, on trial. God is testing us; God is proving us to see what characters we shall build up. Angels of God in heaven are sent to our earth to weigh moral worth. And our heavenly Father has sent us the message of warning, that we shall get ready for that day of final reckoning. He has bid us to watch and pray lest we enter into temptation that surrounds us. Our blessed Saviour said “Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of Me” (John 5:39). Our Saviour knew just what the disciples would pass through. They witnessed the body of the Lord hanging between the heavens and the earth, treated as a sinner, though undeserving. They had taken His body down and laid it in Joseph’s new tomb. Never had they realized so much the worth of a living Saviour as in their great trial. They had not appreciated the value of the Saviour. In this, their great sorrow, was just when they needed Him.Sermons and Talks, vol. 2

They use all the argumentative powers of the mind, and reason with the greatest possible positiveness and force from their own conclusions. They refuse to hear or to search the Scriptures for themselves in order to see if there is not light and evidence in God’s Word that would lead them to make changes in their doctrinal views so as to be in harmony with God’s truth. “Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of Me” [John 5:39].The Youth’s Instructor

More thought should be given to the things of God, and less to temporal matters. The world-loving professor, if he will exercise his mind in that direction, may become as familiar with the word of God as he now is with worldly business. “Search the Scriptures,” said Christ; “for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of Me.” John 5:39. The Christian is required to be diligent in searching the Scriptures, to read over and over again the truths of God’s word. Willful ignorance on this subject endangers the Christian life and character. It blinds the understanding and corrupts the noblest powers. It is this that brings confusion into our lives. Our people need to understand the oracles of God; they need to have a systematic knowledge of the principles of revealed truth, which will fit them for what is coming upon the earth and prevent them from being carried about by every wind of doctrine.Testimony Treasures, vol. 2

The light of truth is shedding its bright beams upon the world through missionary effort. The press is an instrumentality by which many are reached whom it would be impossible to reach by ministerial effort. A great work can be done by presenting to the people the Bible just as it reads. Carry the word of God to every man’s door, urge its plain statements upon every man’s conscience, repeat to all the Saviour’s command: “Search the Scriptures.” John 5:39. Admonish them to take the Bible as it is, to implore divine enlightenment, and then, when the light shines, to gladly accept each precious ray and fearlessly abide the consequences.Testimony Treasures, vol. 2

The law of God should be loved and honored by His true people now more than ever before. There is the most imperative necessity of urging the injunction of Christ upon the minds and hearts of all believers, men and women, youth and children: “Search the Scriptures.” John 5:39. Study your Bible as you have never studied it before. Unless you arise to a higher, holier state in your religious life, you will not be ready for the appearing of our Lord. As great light has been given, God expects corresponding zeal, faithfulness, and devotion on the part of His people. There must be more spirituality, a deeper consecration to God, and a zeal in His work that has never yet been reached. Much time should be spent in prayer, that our garments of character may be washed and made white in the blood of the Lamb.Testimony Treasures, vol. 1
The Bible an Unerring Guide
1TT 510.2
Said Christ: “Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of Me.” John 5:39. The Bible is an unerring guide. It demands perfect purity in word, in thought, and in action. Only virtuous and spotless characters will be permitted to enter the presence of a pure and holy God. The word of God, if studied and obeyed, would lead the children of men, as the Israelites were led by a pillar of fire by night and a pillar of cloud by day. The Bible is God’s will expressed to man. It is the only perfect standard of character, and marks out the duty of man in every circumstance of life. There are many responsibilities resting upon us in this life, a neglect of which will not only cause suffering to ourselves, but others will sustain loss in consequence. From Eternity Past

All who make the Word of God their guide in this life will act from principle. Those who are vacillating, vain, and extravagant in dress, who are gratifying the appetite, and following the promptings of the natural heart, will, in obeying the teachings of God’s Word, become balanced; they will devote themselves to duty with an energy that never falters, and they will rise from one degree of strength to another. Their characters will be beautiful and fragrant and devoid of selfishness. They will make their way and be acceptable anywhere among those who love truth and righteousness. “Search the Scriptures” was the injunction of our Saviour; “for in them ye think ye have eternal life; and they are they which testify of Me.” John 5:39.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 4 (1883 - 1886)

Every faculty is injured. The affections become depraved, and the whole heart becomes, through improper reading, even among our people, deceitful in practice, fictitious in life and character, living and acting a lie. He who made man, He who understands the working of the human heart, He who can see beneath the surface has said, “Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life.” [John 5:39.] Every position of truth taken by our people will bear the criticism of the greatest minds; the highest of the world’s great men will be brought in contact with truth, and therefore every position we take should be critically examined and tested by the Scriptures. Now we seem to be unnoticed, but this will not always be. Movements are at work to bring us to the front; and if our theories of truth can be picked to pieces by historians or the world’s greatest men, it will be done.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 4 (1883 - 1886)

Those who are indeed sanctified will at least show the meekness of Christ and will never claim to be holy; but if they are unholy, unsanctified, and in deception, they will take any position however inconsistent with revealed truth, for Satan is their leader, not Jesus Christ. They stand under the banner of the great deceiver, and Satan has made this deception the most fatal because they reject the Bible. They say they have no longer any need of the Bible. Thus they claim to be taught by the Spirit. But all such are taught of a false spirit. A great work can be done by presenting to the people the Bible just as it reads. Carry the word of God to every man’s door, urge its plain statements upon every man’s conscience, repeat to all the Saviour’s command: “Search the Scriptures.” John 5:39. Admonish them to take the Bible as it is, to implore divine enlightenment, and then, when the light shines, to gladly accept each precious ray and fearlessly abide the consequences.47Testimonies for the Church 5:388Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 6 (1889-1890)

“Search the Scriptures, for in them ye think ye have eternal life and they are they which do testify of Me.” [John 5:39.] These are the words, addressed to the disciples, to be sounded down along the line to our time, and to reach to the end of the world. This charge is not given alone for those ministers who have been ordained, but for all those who would secure the precious boon of eternal life. My mind has been largely exercised upon this subject. I have been unable to sleep since two o’clock. I arise and commit to this, my journal, the things which have impressed my mind.6LtMs, Ms 67, 1890, par. 2
The young should not have placed before them the temptation of reading all kinds of books. Fictitious stories are not the food to give healthy tone to the mind. It is like the use of tea—while it stimulates and excites the mind, it gives no real vigor to the mind. It cultivates the appetite for exciting stories. There is an appetite created for this certainly objectionable class of reading. The mind becomes just what we make it by the food we give it. The life of Christ is to be carefully meditated upon and to be constantly studied with a desire to understand the reason why He had to come at all. We can only form our conclusions by searching the Scriptures as Christ has enjoined upon us to do for says He, “they testify of me.” [John 5:39.] We may find, by searching <the Word,> the virtues of obedience in contrast with the sinfulness of disobedience. “As by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.” [Romans 5:19.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 8 (1893)

Please read your Bible as you have never read it before. “Search the Scriptures,” said Christ, “for in them ye think ye have eternal life; and they are they which testify of me.” [John 5:39.] You have greatly neglected the searching of the Scriptures. Christ the Son of God proclaimed His coming. The angels, who addressed the disciples who were intently gazing upward to catch the last glimpse of their ascending Lord, proclaimed His second coming. “This same Jesus which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.” [Acts 1:11.] Why, then, should Seventh-day Adventists be stigmatized as fanatics? In the teachings of Christ He was ceaselessly referring to the Scriptures. Our blessed Saviour said, “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.” John 5:39. God has given us His Word to be our guide. Christ has said, “Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of Me” (John 5:39). He prayed for His disciples, “Sanctify them through Thy truth: Thy word is truth” (John 17:17). Paul says, “I verily thought with myself, that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth” (Acts 26:9). But this belief did not make his course right. When Paul received the gospel of Jesus Christ, it made him a new creature. He was transformed; the truth planted in his soul gave him such faith and courage as a follower of Christ that no opposition could move him, no suffering daunt him.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

John did not receive his education in the schools, but away from the schools. God was his educator. God has given the light that our schools should be more after the schools of the prophets. There the Spirit of God was so manifested that even when Saul, when pursuing David to kill him, came under the atmosphere of the school, he too received the Spirit of God, and began to prophesy. God wants us to have our schools of that order, as nearly as possible. In them the Bible must stand supreme, as the main basis of study. And as we study His Word, God will fulfill His promise and bring all things to our remembrance, whatsoever He has said to us. “Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life; and they are they which testify of me.” [John 5:39.] What we need is that the Word of God shall be brought into our practical life. They have taken their stand on the wrong side of the question, and view everything in the light of their previous opinions. The work of fathers and mothers is to keep their children uncontaminated from the world. In order to do this, it will be necessary to study the word of God and obtain a rich experience. You will feed upon rich food in studying the life and lessons of Christ, in reading and in praying with the door of your heart open to receive the teachings of the Holy Spirit. In this way you may become truly converted. I entreat you do not make it necessary for God to afflict you by withdrawing his blessing from you. He will withdraw the blessing that is treated by you as though yours by right; for you make it a hindrance rather than a help. The Lord who gave his life for you and for your children, has left this command; “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life, and they are they which testify of me.” [John 5:39.] Those who do not earnestly cultivate spirituality by accepting light, and walking in the light, will find that the light they already have will become darkness. Unless we continually feel the necessity of praying to our heavenly Father for wisdom, unless we search the Scriptures to know the way of the Lord and to be kept by the power of God, then it will become easy to drift further and further away from God, and to unite our interests with that of those who know not and love not the truth. We need spirituality in order to discharge our duties in the fear of god. The Bible tells us that when men deliberately turn away from God, the Lord turns away from them. When the Jews did this the Lord said, “Therefore I scattered them with a whirlwind among all nations.” [Zechariah 7:14.] Again, the Lord says, “Them that honor me I will honor, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.” [1 Samuel 2:30.] This is simply a declaration of the effect of a cause, the necessary result of a certain course of action. The Sun of Righteousness will shine upon those who follow in the footsteps of Jesus; he says, “He that followeth me shall not walk in darkness but shall have the light of life.” [John 8:12.]9LtMs, Ms 105, 1894, par. 16
Is heaven of any value to you? If it is not everything to you it is nothing. If you cannot and will not make it your business to seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, if you will not show that you live by faith in God, making manifest the fact that you are God’s property both by creation and redemption, you have not saving faith, — the faith that receives Christ as your only hope and Redeemer. Should Christ come to those who profess to be his own, should he come to the Christian churches at this day as he did to the Jewish churches at his first advent, how many would receive him? Would not the same displeasure be manifested when he spoke plain, cutting truths which expose sin and condemn unrighteous practices as when he condemned sin in the Jews? Would not hatred be manifested by those who were condemned for their self-righteous principles in this day as at the first advent of Christ. Those who refuse to be doers of the word of Christ in this day as verily reject him as did those who rejected him eighteen hundred years ago. Were Christ on earth today, he would repeat the same words as he did then in seeking to save perishing souls. They did not heed the injunction of Christ: “Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. Chapter 11—Things New and Old
COL 128.1
There are those who profess to believe and to teach the truths of the Old Testament, while they reject the New. But in refusing to receive the teachings of Christ, they show that they do not believe that which patriarchs and prophets have spoken. “Had ye believed Moses,” Christ said, “ye would have believed Me; for he wrote of Me.” John 5:46. Hence there is no real power in their teaching of even the Old Testament.COL 128.2
Many who claim to believe and to teach the gospel are in a similar error. They set aside the Old Testament Scriptures, of which Christ declared, “They are they which testify of Me.” John 5:39. In rejecting the Old, they virtually reject the New; for both are parts of an inseparable whole. No man can rightly present the law of God without the gospel, or the gospel without the law. The law is the gospel embodied, and the gospel is the law unfolded. The law is the root, the gospel is the fragrant blossom and fruit which it bears.John 5:39-47

It contains instruction that is indeed the mystery of godliness. “Search the Scriptures,” Christ said, “for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of Me” [John 5:39].19MR 358.3
“Ye will not come unto Me, that ye might have life,” Christ continued [verse 40]. This is the trouble with some who have had great light. God has honored them, but they have not reflected His glory.19MR 358.4
“I receive not honor from men. But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you. I am come in My Father’s name, and ye receive Me not; if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive” [verses 41-43].19MR 358.6
“How can ye believe, which receive honor one of another, and seek not the honor that cometh from God only? Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust. For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed Me: for he wrote of Me. But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe My words?” [John 5:44-47].Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 11 (1896)

Fix one verse in the mind, and after you have studied it prayerfully yourself, striving to understand thoroughly every word expressed, present that verse to the students. It is of little advantage to skim over the surface of the Scriptures. If we would understand fully the words of Christ, thought must be brought into the searching of the Scriptures. We should open the Scriptures with great reverence, and not in a slothful, lazy manner. And the Lord said unto me, ... I will raise up a prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. And it shall come to pass that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.’ But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?” [John 5:40-47; Deuteronomy 18:15, 17-19.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 11 (1896)

Living Waters for Thirsty Souls
CH 211.2
It is for the object of soul saving that our sanitariums are established. In our daily ministrations we see many careworn, sorrowful faces. What does the sorrow on these faces show? The need of the soul for the peace of Christ. Poor, sad human beings go to broken cisterns, which can hold no water, thinking to quench their thirst. Let them hear a voice saying, “Ho, everyone that thirsteth, come ye to the waters,” “Come to Me, that ye might have life.” Isaiah 55:1; John 5:40.Selected Messages Book 1
Chapter 63—The Pearl of Great Price
1SM 400.1
A daily consecration to God brings peace and rest. The merchant sold all that he had to possess the pearl. When those who are seeking for salvation refuse to fail or be discouraged, they will find peace and rest in the Lord. Christ will clothe them with His righteousness. He will provide them with a clean heart and a renewed mind. These blessings cost the life of the Son of God, and are freely offered to those for whom the sacrifice was made. But how do many treat the proffered gift?—They turn away, choosing rather the pleasures of this life. Christ says of them, “Ye will not come to me, that ye might have life” (John 5:40).That I May Know Him

Be no longer on Satan’s side of the question. Make decided, radical changes through the grace given you of God. No longer insult His grace. He is saying with tears, “Ye will not come to me, that ye might have life” (John 5:40). Now Jesus is inviting you, knocking at the door of your heart for entrance. Chapter 1—The Destruction of Jerusalem
GC 21.2
Looking down the ages, He saw the covenant people scattered in every land, “like wrecks on a desert shore.” In the temporal retribution about to fall upon her children, He saw but the first draft from that cup of wrath which at the final judgment she must drain to its dregs. Divine pity, yearning love, found utterance in the mournful words: “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!” O that thou, a nation favored above every other, hadst known the time of thy visitation, and the things that belong unto thy peace! I have stayed the angel of justice, I have called thee to repentance, but in vain. It is not merely servants, delegates, and prophets, whom thou hast refused and rejected, but the Holy One of Israel, thy Redeemer. If thou art destroyed, thou alone art responsible. “Ye will not come to Me, that ye might have life.” Matthew 23:37; John 5:40.The Great Controversy (1888 ed.)

Our Saviour’s words were plain and decided. He did not suppress one word of truth, but spoke the truth with convincing earnestness. And as He spoke, the desponding drew nearer, and were filled with hope and courage. He was the Prince of heaven. He never spoke a word to give needless pain to any trembling, sensitive soul. He looked with sorrow upon those who rejected Him and made light of His words, and said, “Ye will not come to me, that ye might have life” (John 5:40).This Day With God

Why do we turn from divine wisdom to human wisdom? God sees the dishonor we do Him. He knows that in humanity we shall find no solace for our woe, and He pities us because we are so needy, yet so unwilling to make Him our confidant, our burden-bearer. He sees human beings slighting the love and mercy provided for them, and He says sadly, “Ye will not come to me, that ye might have life” (John 5:40).Ye Shall Receive Power

Christ said of them that they “loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved” (John 3:19, 20). He said, “Ye will not come to me, that ye might have life” (John 5:40). The way was open; but by their own course of action they closed the door, and severed their connection with Christ. We may do the same by rejecting light and truth.—The Review and Herald, March 26, 1889.The Ellen G. White 1888 Materials

One thing many did know, and that is that they were guilty of the very things for which they were reproved, but rather than humble their proud hearts and confess their sins, they threw themselves fully on Satan’s ground to work wickedness. They are of that class of whom Christ said, “Ye will not come to me, that ye might have life” (John 5:40). “Every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved” (John 3:20).The Ellen G. So long had the Jews refused to walk in the light of truth, that they rejected their Saviour. Jesus said of the Jews: “Ye will not come to Me, that ye might have life” (John 5:40). He, the Light of life, came to enlighten every man that comes into the world, so that no man need walk in darkness. The light of truth is constantly shining, but many men and women comprehend it not. And why?—Because selfishness, egotism, pride, blinds their spiritual eyesight. Standing between them and the true light, is the idol of their own opinion. They can see very readily that which they wish to see. Saith the True Witness: “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God” (Revelation 2:7). “The secret of the Lord is with them that fear Him” (Psalm 25:14).Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 2 (1869 - 1875)

The Lord has graciously invited all to come. When He was on earth He said to the unbelieving, obstinate Pharisees, “Ye will not come unto me, that ye might have life.” [John 5:40.] O that this may never be said of us. There is life and peace and joy in Jesus Christ. He is the sinner’s friend. There is power and glory and strength for us all in Him, and if we believe that this power and glory is ours, if we comply with the conditions laid down in His Word, we shall be strong in the strength of the mighty One.Faith and Works

Let us consider our condition before God; let us heed the counsel of the True Witness. Let none of us be filled with prejudice, as were the Jews, that light may not come into our hearts. Let it not be necessary for Christ to say of us as He did of them, “Ye will not come to Me, that ye might have life” (John 5:40).Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 3 (1876 - 1882)

“But,” said I, “can you be saved as a transgressor of God’s law? If the light has come and you will not see it because your good men and your great men will not see the plain light of truth and close their eyes to evidence, you take the very position the Jews took in reference to Christ. He said of them, ‘Ye will not come to Me that ye might have life.’ John 5:40. ‘Light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.’ John 3:19. ‘If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloke for their sin.’” John 15:22.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 3 (1876 - 1882)

I dreamed night before last that I was talking with two ladies who had been privileged to learn the truth had they desired it, but they would not yield to evidence. I was telling them this. I told them they chose darkness rather than the light. I commenced at the law given from Sinai and came down to Christ’s sermon on the Mount. I repeated these words: “Except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:20. I felt more and more the Spirit of God until they saw and felt that it was no more I that spoke but God speaking through me. They turned pale and trembled. I was conscious I was in the Spirit, elevated above myself; God was using me as His mouthpiece. I seemed to be soaring up from earth to heaven, and as I was repeating these words, “Ye will not come to me that ye might have life.” John 5:40. I cried it out so loud and shrill Mary awoke me, and lo, it was a dream. It made quite an impression on my mind.EGW Writings — Ellen G. White. Ellen G. White Estate · all rights reserved

Then commenced the jubilee, when the land should rest. I saw the pious slave rise in triumph and victory, and shake off the chains that bound him, while his wicked master was in confusion, and knew not what to do; for the wicked could not understand the words of the voice of God. [Daniel 12:10.] Soon appeared the great white cloud. [Revelation 14:14.] It looked more lovely than ever before. On it sat the Son of Man. [Luke 21:27.] At first we did not see Jesus on the cloud, but as it drew near the earth, we could behold his lovely person. This cloud when it first appeared was the Sign of the Son of Man in heaven. [Matthew 24:30.] The voice of the Son of God called forth the sleeping saints, [John 5:25-28.] clothed with a glorious immortality. The living saints were changed in a moment, and caught up with them in the cloudy chariot. [1 Thessalonians 4:17.] It looked all over glorious as it rolled upwards. On either side of the chariot were wings, and beneath it wheels. And as the chariot rolled upwards, the wheels cried Holy, and the wings as they moved, cried Holy, and the retinue of Holy Angels around the cloud cried Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty. And the saints in the cloud cried Glory, Hallelujah. And the cloudy chariot rolled upwards to the Holy City. Jesus threw open the gates of the Golden City, and led us in. [Isaiah 26:2.] Here we were made welcome, for we had kept the “Commandments of God,” and had a “right to the tree of life.” [Revelation 22:14.]
