I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. John 17:14, 15.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

“Know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore will be the friend of the world is the enemy of God.” “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this: To visit the fatherless and the widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.” [James 4:4; 1:27.] “I have given them thy word, and the world hath hated them because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. My brethren, will you not love the Lord Jesus with the whole heart? Sinners are dying in their sins, while some of those who claim to have the most solemn truth ever committed to mortals are counterworking the prayer offered by Christ just before He gave His life for the world. “They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world,” He said. [John 17:14.] Can this be said of those who connect themselves with the contention and strife of politics, and who show to the world their differences and disunion?13LtMs, Ms 75, 1898, par. 27
I call upon you to listen to Christ’s words, spoken just before His agony in the garden of Gethsemane. “Sanctify them through thy truth, thy word is truth. As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; that they all may be one, as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us, that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou gavest me, I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them as thou hast loved me.” [Verses 17-23.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

Of His disciples Christ says, “They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.” [John 17:14.] In doing medical missionary work, we can have efficiency and power only by working as Christ worked. And we can be Christlike in word and deed only when His will is perfected in us. Then shall His righteousness go before us, and the glory of the Lord shall be our rearward.17LtMs, Ms 130, 1902, par. 27
The people of God, those who claim to love Him and keep His commandments, are to reflect a much clearer, purer light than they now reflect. Even Christ desired men to know that He was not acting independently, but in behalf of Another, who had sent Him. He never for a moment lost sight of the greatness of His mission. He was always conscious of the fact that He was the Sent of God. And to His Father He declares concerning His disciples, “As Thou hast sent Me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.” [John 17:18.]17LtMs, Ms 130, 1902, par. 33
Clothed with humanity, Christ performed a work that revealed the invisible Father, in order that His disciples might understand the meaning of the prayer, “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven.” [Matthew 6:10.] But how many who claim to be His followers concede to a worldly policy! <They are not pursuing uncorrupted principles.> This is because their hearts are not filled with a love for the truth. God’s purpose in committing to men and women the mission that He committed to Christ is to disentangle His followers from all worldly <connivings and> policy and to give them a work identical with the work that Christ did, <that they might continually be Christ’s representatives in character (John 17:18, 20, 23).>The Ministry of Healing

Here are truths, deep, broad, and eternal, to govern every church in our land that accepts the truth of heavenly origin. “I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.” [Verse 23.] Here are the principles to be acted upon in the church and in all our institutions. To take any other course of action is not to keep the way of the Lord but to walk in the sparks of one’s own kindling, and bring in principles after the fashion and order of the world, which will take the strength and vital godliness from the church, however much they may claim to be the followers of Christ.Manuscript Releases, vol. 18 [Nos. 1301-1359]

We need to be diligent students of the Bible. Christ declared, “I have given them Thy word, and the world hath hated them; because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that Thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that Thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world; sanctify them through Thy truth; Thy word is truth. As Thou hast sent Me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. “I have given them Thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.” [John 17:14.] Their actions do not harmonize with the actions of the world. The pure, unselfish life of the true Christian is a reproach to the worldling. Those who are genuinely converted will not link up with the world. They will not follow the ways and practices of worldlings.20LtMs, Ms 182, 1905, par. 8
“I pray not that Thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that Thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.” [Verses 15, 16.] They are serving a different master from the one served by the world, and they are to keep themselves entirely separate from the evil practices of the world.20LtMs, Ms 182, 1905, par. 9
Christ labored untiringly to save perishing souls, but in all that He did, He kept God’s standard of perfection uplifted. He presented clearly and plainly the requirements of the Word of God, pointing to this Word as the guide by which His workers were to be protected from the evil that they would meet in this world. On every side they would come in contact with polluted sentiments, and Christ prayed, “Sanctify them though Thy truth: Thy word is truth.” [Verse 17.]20LtMs, Ms 182, 1905, par. 10
“As Thou hast sent Me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.” [Verse 18.] The disciples had not been chosen from the learned men of Israel. They were humble, unlearned fishermen; but they were willing to learn of Christ, and He taught them the highest of all wisdom. Christian worth does not depend on lofty birth or brilliant powers, but upon heeding the invitation, “Learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.” [Matthew 11:29, 30.] A heart that feels its constant dependence on the Lord Jesus is necessary to success in the Christian life. Christ’s disciples must work as He worked. As they give themselves wholly to Him for service, the similitude of His character is stamped upon their hearts by His Spirit.20LtMs, Ms 182, 1905, par. 11
“And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also might be sanctified though the truth. Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on Me through their word.” [John 17:19, 20.] These words include all who will come to Christ in repentance, confessing their sins. But there are many who will not do this. They will do anything but confess their sins. They are unwilling to humiliate themselves and will continue to put off the humiliation until at the judgment they will be forced to confess their unworthiness to enter heaven.20LtMs, Ms 182, 1905, par. 17
“That they all may be one; as Thou, Father, art in Me, and I in Thee, that they also may be one in Us: that the world may believe that Thou hast sent Me.” [Verse 21.] This argument is ever to be borne in mind in every family, in every church, in every school. The unity of believers is the evidence that is to convince the world that God sent His Son to save sinners. Satan says, “I will defeat God’s plan. I will make men selfish and bigoted, seeking honor and glory for themselves.” Let us not help him to carry out his evil design. Let us have confidence that God sent His Son to save perishing souls.20LtMs, Ms 182, 1905, par. 18
“And the glory which Thou gavest Me I have given them; that they may be one, even as We are one.” [Verse 22.] My brother, my sister, I am bidden to ask you the question: Are you converted? Are you receiving the endowment of glory that the Father gave His Son? Are you revealing the meekness and lowliness of Christ? “I in them,” by the faith they have in Me, “and Thou in Me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that Thou hast sent Me, and hast loved them, as Thou hast loved Me.” [Verse 23.] How high and holy the thought! It seems too great for us to comprehend. But the promise is sure and steadfast. Christ is able to save to the uttermost all who come to Him. He is our completeness. He fits human beings to be partakers of the divine nature. He whose heart is sanctified through the truth is one with Christ in God. He has the wisdom that is first pure, then peaceable.20LtMs, Ms 182, 1905, par. 23
The words “I in them, and Thou in Me” [John 17:23] reveal the nature and character of the union that is to bind His followers together. This union is needed in the church now, just now. Complete union with Christ and with one another is absolutely necessary to the perfection of believers. Christ’s presence by faith in the hearts of believers is their power, their life. It brings union with God. “Thou in Me.” Union with God through Christ makes the church perfect.20LtMs, Ms 182, 1905, par. 24
“The glory which Thou gavest Me,” as the channel of conveyance, “I have given them, that they may be one, as We are one.” [Verse 22.] We are to bend every energy to the attainment of this oneness. The gifts that God has bestowed upon His people are not to create diversity, but are to blend in harmony. Medical missionary workers are not to regard it as of no consequence whether or not they respect the ministry. God calls for unity. The trumpet that calls His people into line will have a certain sound.20LtMs, Ms 182, 1905, par. 26
“Father, I will that they also, whom Thou hast given Me, be with Me where I am; that they may behold My glory, which Thou hast given Me: for Thou lovedst Me before the foundation of the world. O righteous Father, the world hath not known Thee: but I have known Thee, and these have known that Thou hast sent Me. And I have declared unto them Thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith Thou hast loved Me may be in them, and I in them!” [Verses 24-26.]John 17:15

The world was then no more favorable for the formation of Christian character than it is in our time. Because iniquity abounds, the love of many is growing cold; but shall we cover our light on account of this? The prevalence of greatest iniquity should be the time of the greatest earnestness of the people of God. The Lord does not arrange His plans so that the men who give their hearts to His service, to become His soldiers, should go out of the world to maintain their piety. Personal piety can only bear its testimony in a wise and unconditional surrender to God. It can only be obtained by asking of God. We are to shut our doors to all outward activity, and kneel before our Maker. Away from human beings, we are to consider our duty in the light of the Word of God. “I pray not,” said Christ in His prayer to the Father, “that Thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that Thou shouldest keep them from the evil” (John 17:15). The soul that seeks after God will find Him. And the life will be full of goodness, love, and truth. The conversation will be of heaven, from whence we look for our Saviour. Our greatest necessity is a pure, clean heart and an understanding mind. All kinds of malicious falsehoods were circulated against Christ, and they will be circulated against God’s commandment-keeping people. How shall we prove these to be false? Shall it be by building up a wall between us and the world? Christ’s prayer answers this point: “I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.” [John 17:15.] While our work is aggressive, it must be conducted on Bible principles. All our enterprises are to be carried forward with Christlike simplicity, patience, forbearance, and love for God and for Christ. Our work is to convince, not to condemn. The human beings around us possess like infirmities with ourselves. They have been educated by the clergy that Sunday is the Sabbath, and so long has this error been cherished, that it has become hoary with age. But this does not make it truth.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

There is a power in water, a great power; and there are some here who know this. The sanitarium is to be located in a restful place, where trams are not passing all the time. It should be away from the smoke of the chimneys of a city, where the atmosphere is as pure as can be found. We can be in touch with Sydney, and yet be out of Sydney. Those who receive the Spirit of Christ realize that there is in His words more than appears on the surface. The Christianity of the true believer looks beneath the surface and sees in Christ’s teaching a religion perfectly adapted to every human being—a religion ever actively engaged in doing good.Mind, Character, and Personality, vol. 2

God Deals Plainly—But our Lord does not deceive us. He does not say to us, “Do not fear; there are no dangers in your path.” He knows there are trials and dangers, and He deals with us plainly. He does not propose to take His people out of a world of sin and evil, but He points them to a never-failing refuge. His prayer for His disciples was, “I pray not that Thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that Thou shouldest keep them from the evil.” “In the world,” He says, “ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world” (John 17:15; 16:33).—Steps to Christ, 122, 123 (1892).Our High Calling

We are living in the last days of this earth’s history, in an age of sin and corruption, and like Noah we are to so live that we shall be a pleasure to God, showing forth the praises of Him “who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9). In the prayer which Christ offered to His Father just before His crucifixion, He said, “I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil” (John 17:15).That I May Know Him

The apostle Paul urges upon us the advantages thus placed within our reach. “Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved,” he says, “let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” [2 Corinthians 7:1.] This is the work before us. We are to separate from the world in spirit and practice if we would become sons and daughters of God. “I pray not,” Christ said, “that Thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that Thou shouldest keep them from the evil. A deep and thorough work of reform is needed in the Seventh-day Adventist church. The world is not to be allowed to corrupt the principles of God’s commandment-keeping people. Believers are to exert an influence that bears witness to the power of heavenly principles. Those who unite with the church must give evidence of a change of principle. Unless this is done, unless the line of demarcation between the church and the world is carefully preserved, assimilation to the world will be the result. Our message to the church and to our institutions is: “Repent ye; for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” [Matthew 3:2.] The attributes of Christ’s character are to be cherished, and these are to become a power in the lives of God’s people. “I pray not that Thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that Thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through Thy truth; Thy word is truth. As Thou hast sent Me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.” [John 17:15-18.] What a statement is this! Who believes that those who profess to believe present truth are sent into the world as Christ was sent into the world by His Father? What a work Christ did! To expel the powers of darkness, to give health and strength to those who receive Him, this was His work. “As many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name.” [John 1:12.]John 17:15-19

What have you done for the Master? What have you been doing in order that souls might see their duty? What have you been doing to bring souls to the Master? If you have been doing that work, and you can bring sheaves to Him, you will have the “Well done.” What are we to do? Very many here have become connected with the world. Christ says, “I pray not that Thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that Thou shouldest keep them from the evil.” [John 17:15.] It is a constant guardianship. It is to stand as faithful sentinels. It is to have everything connected with us sanctified, the powers which God has given us in order to press humanity, in order to elevate, to ennoble, for Christ said, “I sanctify Myself that they also may be sanctified.” [Verse 19.] To do this work, it will be constant watchfulness, constant care. They must be those who are constantly watching and guarding themselves, that they shall not offend God.4LtMs, Ms 2, 1885, par. 18
There are the conditions. Now, I ask, are you obeying? Those who have made a profession of Jesus Christ, are you loving your neighbor as yourself? Are you straining to reach that high level of holiness? “I sanctified Myself in order that you might be sanctified.” [John 17:19.] If you reach a high standard, another may be inclined to reach it, and an unconscious influence is telling upon the souls and lives and characters of those around you. Suppose the physicians in the institute should take a position to lower the standard, it will be seen in the judgment that they are weighed in the balance and found wanting. Suppose in our college the teachers should be lax and loose, and should not take a consistent course in accordance with the Bible standard—what if they have been lowering the Bible standard? They form characters that will not meet the approval of high heaven, and when the judgment reveals the fact, it will be seen that the youth were drawn away from the path cast out for them to walk in. It will be seen that their very inattentions to religious duties had an influence to draw them in the wrong direction.Manuscript Releases, vol. 9 [Nos. 664-770]

Chapter 13—Rejoicing in the Lord
SC 115.1
The children of God are called to be representatives of Christ, showing forth the goodness and mercy of the Lord. As Jesus has revealed to us the true character of the Father, so we are to reveal Christ to a world that does not know His tender, pitying love. “As Thou hast sent Me into the world,” said Jesus, “even so have I also sent them into the world.” “I in them, and Thou in Me; ... that the world may know that Thou hast sent Me.” John 17:18, 23. The apostle Paul says to the disciples of Jesus, “Ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ,” “known and read of all men.” 2 Corinthians 3:3, 2. In every one of His children, Jesus sends a letter to the world. If you are Christ’s follower, He sends in you a letter to the family, the village, the street, where you live. Jesus, dwelling in you, desires to speak to the hearts of those who are not acquainted with Him. Perhaps they do not read the Bible, or do not hear the voice that speaks to them in its pages; they do not see the love of God through His works. But if you are a true representative of Jesus, it may be that through you they will be led to understand something of His goodness and be won to love and serve Him.SC 122.3

None should lightly regard the principles sustained by the Word of God. Every soul needs to have a deep, abiding sense of the importance of knowing for himself what is truth, not what is the minister’s opinion but what saith the Scriptures. Christ’s prayer just before His crucifixion was for His disciples. Listen: “I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. Let us bear this in mind, that as God sent His Son into the world to represent the truth in character, in action, so has Christ sent us into the world to represent His character, because we put on Christ and reveal that we have the mind of Christ. “And for their sakes I sanctify myself,” Christ said, “that they also might be sanctified through the truth. Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word, that they all may be one, as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us; that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. We profess to be the depositaries of God’s law; we claim to have greater light and to aim at a higher standard than any other people upon the earth; therefore we should show greater perfection of character and more earnest devotion. A most solemn message has been entrusted to those who have received the light of truth. Our light should shine forth to brighten the pathway of those who are in darkness. As members of the visible church, and workers in the vineyard of the Lord, all professed Christians should do their utmost to preserve peace, harmony, and love in the church. Mark the prayer of Christ: “That they all may be one, as Thou, Father, art in Me, that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that Thou hast sent Me.” [Verse 21.] The unity of the church is the convincing evidence that God has sent Jesus into the world as its Redeemer. This is an argument which worldlings can neither withstand nor controvert. Therefore Satan is constantly working to prevent this union and harmony, that unbelievers, by witnessing backbiting, dissension, and strife among professed Christians, may become disgusted with religion and be confirmed in their impenitence. God is dishonored by those who profess the truth while they are at variance and enmity with one another. Satan is the great accuser of the brethren, and all who engage in this work are enlisted in his service.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 5 (1887-1888)

(John 17:15-26) give in full. This is the great purpose for which Christ came into our world. He left the heavenly courts and came to convince the world of sin, that they may come into complete harmony with God in taking away their sin and become channels of light to a sinful world, through the Spirit which shall mold and fashion their souls after the divine similitude. What are the words of Christ? “Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on Me through their word: that they all may be one” [verses 20, 21], not independent atoms, doing as they please, but united in the great, grand principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ, that the power of the gospel may be demonstrated to the unbelieving world.25LtMs, Ms 67, 1910, par. 35
“That they all may be one, as Thou Father art in Me and I in Thee, that they also may be one in Us; that the world may believe that Thou hast sent Me. Shall every believer work, interested for the souls that are perishing in their sins? When those who claim to be Christians begin to draw apart, they are discarding the divine theocracy. We need now the converting influence of the Holy Spirit of God. The Lord will work with all who will engage earnestly for the salvation of perishing souls.25LtMs, Ms 67, 1910, par. 38
Christ’s prayer continues, “Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on Me through their word, that they all may” become not independent atoms, doing as they please, but become united; [and through them] the great, grand, elevated, sanctified principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ may [be] demonstrated to the unbelieving world; that they all may be sanctified through the power of the gospel and may be laborers together with God, that the unbelieving world may become one in heart and one in principle as Thou. “And the glory which Thou gavest Me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: that the world may know that Thou hast sent Me, and hast loved them as Thou hast loved Me.” [Verses 20-23.]John 17:16-19

Jesus ... says, “I sanctify myself, that they also may be sanctified through the truth” (John 17:19). “Thy word is truth.” We need, then, to become familiar with the Word of God, to study and to practice it in life.... We deny Jesus Christ as the One who taketh away the sins of the world if we do not, after accepting the truth, reveal to the world the sanctifying effects of the truth on our own characters. If we are not better men and women, if we are not more kindhearted, more pitiful, more courteous, more full of tenderness and love, if we do not manifest to others the love that led Jesus to the world on His mission of mercy, we are not witnesses to the world of the power of Jesus Christ.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 22 (1907)

“They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world,” Christ prayed. “Sanctify them through Thy truth; Thy word is truth.” [John 17:16, 17.] Since we are to be sanctified through the truth, it becomes us to know what is truth—the truth for this time. This truth is to be exemplified in the lives of God’s people. They are to make progress heavenward by looking to Jesus and walking as He walked.19LtMs, Lt 11, 1904, par. 7

How clear and truthful then should be this word.19LtMs, Lt 11, 1904, par. 8
“That they all may be one,” Christ continued, “as Thou, Father, art in Me, and I in Thee, that they also may be one in Us; that the world may believe that Thou hast sent Me.” [Verse 21.] These words hold out before us wonderful possibilities. Shall we not individually seek to answer the prayer of Christ? Shall we not strive for the unity which He prayed might exist among His followers? What is this unity to do?—It is to show the world that God sent His Son to save sinners. Since it is to have so blessed a result, should not the followers of Christ do all in their power to obtain it?John 17:16-23

While I feel all the interest in the Southern field that I have ever felt, I must consider when the great State of New York is presented before me, and also New York City with all that it embraces. I see this field as another portion of the Lord’s neglected vineyard. The sight presented to me is what brought me from St. Helena. I see now that the present is the time to work this field and all that it embraces. New Jersey and Brooklyn, with their suburbs, are all embraced. I was so glad we had a <hired> hall which could accommodate seven hundred people on Sabbath and first day. There had been a good work done to purge away dissension and strife, and to unify the people of God, that the work might be performed here in the spirit of love and unity, that God might be glorified. This people are to bear to the world in their unity the credentials that God hath sent His Son. Then do not let any one feel it to be a virtue to stand constantly as accusers, after the testimony God has given has come to His people. Let all read John 17:26. Study constantly how much consequence and eternal importance is given to this unity specified in the prayer of Christ for His disciples. How shall this prayer be answered? Only by every sincere believer’s putting away all evil thinking, all evil expressions. (Verse 21): “That they all may be one.” That means that we are to feel that we are under claims to Jesus Christ to will to do the expressed will of God. “That they all may be one: as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that the world may know that thou hast sent me. How can these things be? many may ask. Wonderful, amazing condescension and love for fallen humanity! Here is brought to view the change that must take place in the heart. And “faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” [Romans 10:17.] The Scriptures are the great agency in this transformation. Christ prayed, “Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth.” [John 17:17.] In this great work we are laborers together with God. With the divine agency there is to be the co-operation of the human instrument. To each of His followers Christ says, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:18-20.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

The church has a work to do. Said Christ, “Sanctify them through the truth; thy word is truth.” [John 17:17.] And the apostle Paul says, “If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better then themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God; but made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men.” [Philippians 2:1-7.] Are we individually striving to obey this injunction?Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

The truth must be made known. Christ prayed the Father in behalf of His disciples, saying, “Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth.” [John 17:17.] The work had already begun in their hearts, and the Holy Spirit, operating on heart and will, showed that the truth was the instrument in their conversion.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

In this English-speaking country there is no difference of language as an obstacle to our reaching the people. And the truth has not been presented and rejected. There are thousands of honest souls praying for light. The Word of God is to be presented as it is in Jesus. It is not enough to present the Bible as other books are presented. That it may be understood savingly, the Holy Spirit must work upon the heart of the receiver. The same Spirit that inspired the Word must inspire the readers of the Word. Then we shall hear the voice of heaven in all its harmony, and impressions will be made and an intelligent knowledge attained. “Thy word, O God, is truth,” will be the language of the soul. Christ’s prayer to His Father for His disciples was, “Sanctify them through thy truth, thy word is truth.” [John 17:17.] All who earnestly desire to know whether they have the King’s mark will examine His Word critically. A spurious sabbath is not exalted before the people. This is the mark, the sign, of a kingdom that stands in opposition to the King of kings, the Lord of hosts. This kingdom seeks to show its power and authority by taking a common working day, a child of the papacy, and giving it to the Protestant world as the Sabbath of the Lord. It has sought to discard the sign which God has said should be preserved to a thousand generations. Those who have a knowledge of the Scriptures are not merely to believe the Word. They are to be obedient to all of God’s commandments, bringing the principles of the law into every business transaction. This God requires of every soul, that the law may stand before the world in its true character, holy, just and good. Thus God’s people magnify the law and make it honorable. Let the prayer go forth from unfeigned lips, “Sanctify me through thy truth; thy word is truth.” [John 17:17.]Lift Him Up

Right here in this school, right here, with all the advantages to obtain an experience that will be a safeguard to them all their life, many are failing. Self must pass through the severe conflict of death, that the human agent shall understand the language of Paul, “I live, yet not I, but Christ liveth in me.” [Galatians 2:20.] “For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that shall be revealed in us.” [Romans 8:18.] “Thy word, O God, is truth.” [John 17:17.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 15 (1900)

The members of a church believing present truth need daily to purify their hearts by obeying the truth. Christ prayed, “Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth.” [John 17:17.] Unless the members of the church show that faith that works by love and purifies the soul, there will be bickerings in the church. But there is no excuse for this, for Christ is love. Individually we are to follow the example of the Master, manifesting respect and love for one another. Unless we do this, we cannot reveal to the world the transforming power of the grace of Christ.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

Christ’s petition for His disciples was, “Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth.” [John 17:17.] Only by the Word of God can we be sanctified. The impenitent are becoming more and more bold in their wickedness, more decided and cruel in their hatred of the truth. The words of the prophet are positive, “Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly, and none of the wicked shall understand.” [Daniel 12:10.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

By a carnality in words the talent of speech has been an injury to the precious cause of present truth. The time has come when all the differences must be put away fully and thoroughly, and now, without delay, attempt a united, systematic effort for the one great object—sanctification through Jesus Christ to the obedience of the truth. “Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth.” [John 17:17.] How long would it be before the influence of one would be the influence of all? Zeal, piety, and wisdom would blend in the converted souls through sanctification of the truth in a combined movement, and the gospel of Christ would be exerting its decided influence in vigorous action, demonstrating the power of God unto salvation, and there would be deep earnestness in the work, more combined and vigorous effort—a using of all your energies, sustaining one another in the work of enlarging the territory of the Kingdom of God in our cities, that earnest results would be seen, and prayers and hands would be uplifted to heaven, saying, “Who is sufficient for these things?” [2 Corinthians 2:16.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

God requires of us conformity to His image. Holiness is the reflection from His people of the bright rays of His glory. But in order to reflect this glory, man must work with God. The heart and mind must be emptied of all that leads to wrong. The Word of God must be read and studied with an earnest desire to gain from it spiritual power. The bread of heaven must be eaten and digested, that it may become a part of the life. Thus we gain eternal life. Then is answered the prayer of the Saviour, “Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth.” [John 17:17.]Manuscript Release No 1033

We have a whole far-reaching history. Christ’s prayer is: “Sanctify them through thy truth” [John 17:17]—that is, make the human agent holy through the sanctification of Thy Word. The human agent is not to take Christ’s place, or to receive the glory that was to be His living ministration. He was to behold and bear witness to the Light, pointing out the way, a witness attesting to the glory—a voice in the desert, “Behold the Lamb of God.” [John 1:29.] That you may understand more clearly, John [the Baptist] says he was not that Light, but was appointed for this office, “to bear witness of that Light.” [Verse 8.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

This morning my soul is drawn out in prayer for the guidance of the Holy Spirit. My plea is, “Sanctify me through Thy truth; Thy word is truth.” [John 17:17.] There is only one power that can guide the heart into the path of righteousness and peace. We are to bring the love of Christ into the daily experience, and we are to reveal righteousness in word and act, showing that we hate sin and love righteousness. We are to become more and more familiar with Christ’s divine-human life. In thought, word, and deed, from the manger to the cross, Christ lived a perfect life, and this, too, while tempted in all points like as we are. He possessed all the susceptibilities and properties of a human being.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 18 (1903)

We have no need for fanciful theories. What we need to understand is the plain, simple truth that Christ taught—the truth that concerns our eternal welfare. He knew what subjects to speak upon and what subjects to be silent upon. We are not to seek for fanciful theories to present, to satisfy the unsanctified desire for something new. The Word of God contains truth that will make us wise unto salvation. “Sanctify them through Thy truth,” Christ prayed; “Thy word is truth.” [John 17:17.] The Word of God, presented in love, and in love received and obeyed, is able to save the soul of the teacher and the souls of those who are instructed by his ministry.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 20 (1905)

I have been carrying a heavy burden so long as I consider the spiritual condition of the people of God, moving so far below their privilege. I lie awake pleading with my heavenly Saviour to come to our help and raise up messengers that shall bear a message decidedly to the point. “Thy word is truth.” [John 17:17.] I long for physical strength and power, that out of the abundance of the heart moved by the Holy Spirit, the mouth may speak. Oft in the vision of the night, I am speaking to large companies; and in strong appeals I am repeatedly urging upon the companies before me: “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affections on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. Satan will bring his temptations, and if he is to be resisted we must pray to God for deliverance. If there ever was a time that we needed to pray, it is in these last days. The Word is no more bound than it was when Christ was upon the earth. We shall have Satan and evil men to combat, but we also shall have messengers of light to help us. It is for us to gather upon our pathway all the rays of light, and not listen to error, for if we do we shall be turned away from truth. We have no time to listen to fables. Christ’s prayer was, “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth” (John 17:17). The prayer of Christ before He left the world was “Sanctify them through Thy truth: Thy word is truth.” [John 17:17.] Now what kind of a sacrifice did Christ make? He came here to show what it meant to be a Christian, in kindness, in love, in temperance, in all things to be a perfect pattern. Why, to profess to be a Christian is nothing. It is nothing at all. You may be placed in positions of trust, you may become ministers, you may become pastors, you may become all these, and yet there is a selfishness woven into the web that Christ or God does not accept. What we want is to be in a position to give the light of truth just where it should be given. Christ prayed, “Sanctify them through Thy truth; Thy word is truth.” John 17:17. If studied and obeyed, the word of God works in the heart, subduing every unholy attribute. The Holy Spirit comes to convict of sin, and the faith that springs up in the heart works by love to Christ, conforming us in body, soul, and spirit to His own image. Then God can use us to do His will. The power given us works from within outwardly, leading us to communicate to others the truth that has been communicated to us.Our High Calling

The banner of truth and religious liberty which these Reformers held aloft has in this last conflict been committed to us. The responsibility for this great gift rests with those whom God has blessed with a knowledge of His word. We are to receive God’s word as supreme authority. We must accept its truths for ourselves. And we can appreciate these truths only as we search them out by personal study. Then, as we make God’s word the guide of our lives, for us is answered the prayer of Christ: “Sanctify them through Thy truth: Thy word is truth.” John 17:17. True sanctification is a Bible doctrine. The apostle Paul, in his letter to the Thessalonian church, declares: “This is the will of God, even your sanctification.” And he prays: “The very God of peace sanctify you wholly.” 1 Thessalonians 4:3; 5:23. The Bible clearly teaches what sanctification is and how it is to be attained. The Saviour prayed for His disciples: “Sanctify them through Thy truth: Thy word is truth.” John 17:17. And Paul teaches that believers are to be “sanctified by the Holy Ghost.” Romans 15:16. What is the work of the Holy Spirit? Jesus told His disciples: “When He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth.” John 16:13. And the psalmist says: “Thy law is the truth.” By the word and the Spirit of God are opened to men the great principles of righteousness embodied in His law. And since the law of God is “holy, and just, and good,” a transcript of the divine perfection, it follows that a character formed by obedience to that law will be holy. Christ is a perfect example of such a character. He says: “I have kept My Father’s commandments.” “I do always those things that please Him.” John 15:10; 8:29. The followers of Christ are to become like Him—by the grace of God to form characters in harmony with the principles of His holy law. This is Bible sanctification.Faith and Works

God has given us His Word to be our guide. Christ has said, “Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of Me” (John 5:39). He prayed for His disciples, “Sanctify them through Thy truth: Thy word is truth” (John 17:17). Paul says, “I verily thought with myself, that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth” (Acts 26:9). But this belief did not make his course right. When Paul received the gospel of Jesus Christ, it made him a new creature. He was transformed; the truth planted in his soul gave him such faith and courage as a follower of Christ that no opposition could move him, no suffering daunt him.The Sanctified Life

Its advocates teach that the law of God is a grievous yoke. and that by faith in Christ, men are released from all obligation to keep his Father’s commandments. Bible sanctification is a conformity to the will of God, attained by rendering obedience to his law, through faith in his Son. Our Saviour prayed for his disciples, “Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth.” [John 17:17.] There is no genuine sanctification except through obedience to the truth; and the psalmist declares, “Thy law is the truth.” [Psalm 119:142.] The law of God is the only standard of moral perfection. That law was exemplified in the life of Christ. He says, “I have kept my Father’s commandments.” [John 15:10.] And the apostle John affirms, “He that saith he abideth in Him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.” And again, “This is the love of God, that we keep his commandments.” [1 John 2:6; 5:3.] Those who love God will love his commandments also. He presents a theory of sanctification as a matter of the utmost importance, while he makes of but little importance the channel through which God’s blessing comes. “Sanctify them through Thy truth: Thy word is truth.” John 17:17. The present truth, which is the channel, is not regarded, but is trampled underfoot. Men may cry, Holiness! holiness! sanctification! sanctification! consecration! consecration! and yet know no more by experience of what they talk than the sinner with his corrupt propensities. God will soon tear off this whitewashed garb of professed sanctification which some who are carnally minded have thrown around them to hide the deformity of the soul. From Here to Forever
What Is Sanctification?
HF 289.4
Paul declares, “This is the will of God, even your sanctification.” The Bible clearly teaches what sanctification is and how it is to be attained. The Saviour prayed for His disciples: “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” And Paul teaches that believers are to be “sanctified by the Holy Ghost.” 1 Thessalonians 4:3; John 17:17; Romans 15:16.Faith and Works
Chapter 11—Obedience and Sanctification
FW 85.2
Obedience to the law of God is sanctification. There are many who have erroneous ideas in regard to this work in the soul, but Jesus prayed that His disciples might be sanctified through the truth, and added, “Thy word is truth” (John 17:17). Sanctification is not an instantaneous but a progressive work, as obedience is continuous. Just as long as Satan urges his temptations upon us, the battle for self-conquest will have to be fought over and over again; but by obedience, the truth will sanctify the soul. Those who are loyal to the truth will, through the merits of Christ, overcome all weakness of character that has led them to be molded by every varying circumstance of life. From the Heart

Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.—John 17:17.HB 95.3
True sanctification is a Bible doctrine. The apostle Paul, in his letter to the Thessalonian church, declares: “This is the will of God, even your sanctification.” And he prays: “The very God of peace sanctify you wholly.” (1 Thessalonians 4:3; 5:23.) The Bible clearly teaches what sanctification is and how it is to be attained. The Saviour prayed for His disciples: “Sanctify them through Thy truth: Thy word is truth.” (John 17:17.) And Paul teaches that believers are to be “sanctified by the Holy Ghost.” (Romans 15:16.) What is the work of the Holy Spirit? Jesus told His disciples: “When He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth.” (John 16:13.) And the psalmist says: “Thy law is the truth.” By the word and the Spirit of God are opened to us the great principles of righteousness embodied in His law. And since the law of God is “holy, and just, and good,” a transcript of the divine perfection, it follows that a character formed by obedience to that law will be holy. Christ is a perfect example of such a character. He says: “I have kept My Father’s commandments.” “I do always those things that please Him.” (John 15:10; 8:29.) The followers of Christ are to become like Him—by the grace of God to form characters in harmony with the principles of His holy law. This is Bible sanctification.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 2 (1869 - 1875)

Satan will bring his temptations, and if he is to be resisted, we must pray to God for deliverance. Christ’s prayer was, “Sanctify them through Thy truth: Thy word is truth.” John 17:17. We want the truth and we want to give Him all our powers, that when He comes, His benediction will rest upon every one of us, and we shall receive the reward.Faith and Works
Chapter 19—Opinions and Practices to Be Conformed to God’s Word
FW 121.3
Excitement is not sanctification. Entire conformity to the will of our Father which is in heaven is alone sanctification, and the will of God is expressed in His holy law. The keeping of all the commandments of God is sanctification. Proving yourselves obedient children to God’s Word is sanctification. The Word of God is to be our guide, not the opinions or ideas of men. Let those who would be truly sanctified search the Word of God with patience, with prayer, and with humble contrition of soul. Let them remember that Jesus prayed, “Sanctify them through Thy truth: Thy word is truth” (John 17:17).Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 4 (1883 - 1886)

Christ offers a prayer to the Father, and He uses these words in this prayer; “Sanctify them by Thy truth, Thy Word is truth.” [John 17:17.] I have sent them into the [world] as Thou hast sent Me into the world, even so have I sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. Mark these words: I sanctify Myself. Thus He observes a life of perfect obedience, for He is the perfect pattern. Then He goes on and says: That they may be sanctified—by what? Through emotion? through feeling? No.—Through the truth. We are in a world where sin and iniquity prevail, and we want to know what we shall do in order to inherit eternal life. We cannot any of us afford to miss the great reward that is presented before the overcomer. We want to know that the steps that we are taking are heavenward instead of earthward. The truth which we profess will be of no avail to us unless we are sanctified through it. Christ prayed that His disciples might be sanctified through the truth. “Thy word,” said He, “is truth.” [John 17:17.] And while that error is prevailing to such an extent in our land, we want to know what is truth, because we cannot be sanctified by error. The gospel is a system of practical truths destined to work great changes in human character. If it does not work the transformation in life, in habits, and practice, it is no truth to those who claim to believe it. Man must be sanctified through the truth. And said Jesus, “Thy Word is truth.” [John 17:17.] Unless the truth of God shall lift up man out of his depravity, his intemperate and profligate habits, and make him reflect the image of God, he is lost.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 5 (1887-1888)

This is a mournful statement. There are those who will fail to enter in at the strait gate because they only seek to enter in and do not strive. Those who make a success in overcoming will have to make a persevering effort. The whole world lieth in darkness. Darkness covers the earth and gross darkness the people. And the Lord calls, upon the members of the church to labor together with Him in awakening the world, if possible, to their peril. We cannot do this of ourselves. We must derive our efficiency from Christ. Jesus says, “I, if I be lifted up, will draw all unto me.” [John 12:32.] Here is the secret of power, of effectiveness; for though human instrumentalities are employed in the work of salvation, it is the light shining from the uplifted cross that alone can attract hearts heavenward. We must present the truth as it is in Jesus. The light and power of an indwelling Saviour must be ours, or we cannot draw others to Him. We must be imbued with the Spirit of truth, the Spirit of Christ. There is no power in humanity to draw humanity to Christ. We are as iron that cannot attract unless it be magnetized. We must be sanctified through the truth if we would have a sanctifying influence upon others. Jesus says, “Thy word is truth.” [John 17:17.] It is through a sanctified knowledge of the Word of God that we shall be able to overcome the powers of darkness and win souls for the Master.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 6 (1889-1890)

It is a beautiful day. Marian, Sara, and I drove out of Petoskey about two miles to the nice place we found yesterday. Sara took her calligraph and copied. I wrote many pages to the Ohio Mission. Marian was preparing the matter to be struck off on the calligraph. This was a pleasant time for us all. We took our dinner and enjoyed it much, although we all worked very earnestly. I wrote diligently until past four, then we returned to our home in Petoskey. All day was devoted to writing in regard to missions. Abundance has been written and published upon this matter; but those whose hearts are not right, those who are not answering the prayer of Christ “Sanctify them through thy truth, thy word is truth” [John 17:17], will not walk circumspectly, and that the Lord Jesus is too ashamed to call them brethren.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 8 (1893)

What can I say? We want hearts that can feel. Is it a mistake that our institutions have been established, and that people are to be entrusted with the great responsibilities, chosen as depositories of sacred and eternal truth fraught with eternal results? Lightbearers must illuminate the world and shine as lights amid the moral darkness. I ask, Has God made a mistake? Are we laborers together with God? Are we chosen vessels? Are we the men and women links in His chain that belts the world to send forth the saving message of eternal life? Is Christ abiding in our hearts by faith? What efforts are made, what liberality displayed, what economy practiced, what unselfish love in the disposition of the entrusted goods of our Lord? Where Christ is formed within, how we would deny ourselves to save means to extend the kingdom of Christ in our world, lifting up the oppressed, molding and fashioning character, pitying the widow and the fatherless. The banner of truth and religious liberty which these reformers held aloft, God has in this last conflict committed to our hands. Those whom He has blessed with the knowledge of His Word are held responsible for this great gift. We are to receive it as supreme authority. We must accept its truths for ourselves, as our own individual act. And we shall be able to appreciate these truths, only as we shall search them out for ourselves, by personal study of the Word of God. Then as we accept it as the guide of our lives, the prayer of Christ is answered for us. “Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth.” [John 17:17.] The acknowledgement of the truth both in word and by example is our confession of faith, and it is only as we thus acknowledge the truth that others can know that we believe the Bible.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 8 (1893)

This prophecy of enmity between Satan and Christ is far-reaching. It is a delineation of an unwearied conflict between Christ and His followers and Satan and his angels and fallen men united in a desperate companionship to reproach, bruise, wound, and exterminate the followers of Christ to the close of time. This controversy between Satan and Christ was carried on here in this world. Satan was constantly afflicting the Son of God and creating prejudice in the minds of men. Not only were Christ’s doctrines and teachings perverted, misinterpreted, and wrested from their true meaning, but falsehoods followed Him everywhere. His pure character was assailed, and He was compelled to flee from one city to another because of the spies upon His track. The falsehoods and misrepresentations that the chief priests and Pharisees and Sadducees poured into the ears of the people appealed to the worst passions of adulterers, fornicators, and dishonest men, exciting a burning prejudice that made it almost impossible for Him to live upon the earth for even three years and a half after His public ministry began. Why, then, should those who bear the truth of God to the world be discouraged and fainthearted? Christ has said, “If the world hate you, ye know that it hated Me before it hated you.” John 15:18. Ye “are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.” John 17:14. They will “revile you, and persecute you, and say all manner of evil against you falsely, for My name’s sake.” Matthew 5:11. “Yea, the time cometh that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service. Those who are wavering between Christ and the world are in need of the converting power of God. When they see what sin is, and what is the righteousness of Christ for them, they will no longer dwell in the cave of unbelief. God calls upon them to come out of the cave, and stand with Him. No longer question your need of a personal Saviour. The heart, as well as the understanding must be enlarged; it is not enough to have an intellectual knowledge of the truth, there must be a heart work. The soul-temple must be cleansed from the buyers and sellers and must be opened for the indwelling of the Spirit of God. Christ drew the line of distinction between His disciples and the world, between Himself, even, and His brothers, the sons of Joseph. Listen to these words from His prayer offered just before His agony in Gethsemane, “They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.” [John 17:14.]
