Chapter 15—The Value of Bible Study
CE 117.2
Those who humbly and prayerfully search the Scriptures, to know and to do God’s will, will not be in doubt of their obligations to God. For “if any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine.” [John 7:17.] If you would know the mystery of godliness, you must follow the plain word of truth,—feeling or no feeling, emotion or no emotion. Obedience must be rendered from a sense of principle, and the right must be pursued under all circumstances. This is the character that is elected of God unto salvation. The test of a genuine Christian is given in the word of God. Says Jesus, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” [John 14:15.] “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.... If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.” [John 14:21, 23, 24.]To Be Like Jesus

The test of a genuine Christian is given in the Word of God. Says Jesus, “If ye love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15). “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.... If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. But it is men that need the change. It is men that have shown their weakness and selfishness in councils that would benefit themselves. Shown it in receiving the large wages which mean the limiting of others below what they should have. The curse of God is on all such inventions. Religion must be carried into all business transactions. “If ye love me,” said our loving Redeemer, “keep my commandments.” “He that hath (a knowledge of) my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.” [John 14:15, 21.] See John 14:23, 24.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

“We are made a spectacle unto the world, and to angels, and to men.” [1 Corinthians 4:9.] Those who obey the truth become Christ’s witnesses. By precept and example, they show to others what is required by law of God. Christians are to manifest an independence to believe what the Scriptures say and to obey the word of God regardless of what their neighbors may dictate. We shall be constantly tempted to associate with unbelievers and to follow where they may lead, but we are to be faithful soldiers of Jesus Christ in the world. We may know that our neighbors consider us foolish in advocating the law of God, in declaring the it is perfect, and able to convert the soul. They may think it very unkind that we separate ourselves in practice, and make ourselves singular; but let us never say I cannot lift the straw, cannot bear this burden. Ever since Christ came into the world, men have manifested cowardice when called to acknowledge Christ. Men have shrunk as they do now from the consequences of obeying the truth. They have realized that there would be alienation between themselves and their neighbors. But shall we4 hide our light under a bushel, because others do not wish to behold it? The Lord says, “Let your light so shine before me, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” [Matthew 5:16.] Those who follow Christ will necessarily differ from the world and from those who are merely professed Christians. The Saviour says, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” “He that hath my commandments and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me; and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and manifest myself unto him. ... He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings; and the word which ye hear is not mine; but the Father’s which sent to me.” [John 14:15, 21, 24.] Obedience is the test of discipleship. But how little do men appreciate the privilege of having the companionship of Christ, of being in harmony with God! They do not realize that they are Christ’s property, bought with an infinite price, and that they are to glorify God in their body and in their spirits which are his. The most important friendship is the friendship of God. There should be continual watchfulness to keep the soul pure and holy in faithfully doing his commandments.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. ... Greater love hath no man than this that a man lay down his life for his friends. Everything is at stake with us. Our obedience or disobedience to the commandments of God will decide our eternal welfare. “If ye keep my commandments,” Christ says, “ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.” [John 15:10.] “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me; and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. ... “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul.” [Psalm 19:7.] Obedience to this law is required, for it is the transcript of the character of God. Obedience is the proof of love. “If ye love me,” Christ said, “keep my commandments.” [John 14:15.] In order to escape from obedience to the moral law, the teachers of today deceive poor bewildered souls by saying that Christ’s commandments and the precepts of the moral law are not the same thing. But this is not so. “He that hath my commandments and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me, and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. ... If a man love me, he will keep my words, and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not, keepeth not my sayings, and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.” [Verses 21, 23, 24.] This is the truth in regard to the plan of salvation. No other foundation can be laid than that which is laid.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

Every human being will be tested as were Adam and Eve, to see whether they will be obedient. Our loyalty or disloyalty decides our future destiny. Since the fall of Adam men in every age have excused themselves, charging God with their sin, saying that they cannot keep His commandments. This is the insinuation Satan cast at God in heaven. But the plea, “I cannot obey the commandment” need never be presented to God, for before Him stands the Saviour, the marks of the crucifixion upon His body, a living witness that the law can be kept. It is not that we cannot keep the law, but we will not yield up our stubborn wills. See John 15:10; 14:15, 21, 23, 24.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 22 (1907)

Do you wish to hide your light, the truth, under a bushel? “Let your light so shine that men, by seeing your good works, shall glorify your Father which is in heaven.” [Matthew 5:16.] You will necessarily differ from the world and from professed Christians who are so [resistant to] obeying the commandments of God. “If ye love Me,” said Christ, “keep My commandments”—you are not to be ashamed of Me or of My words. John 14:15. [Read also] verse 16. “He that hath My commandments and keepeth them, he it is that loveth Me and he that loveth Me shall be loved of My Father, and I will love Him and will manifest Myself unto him.” John 14:21. “He that loveth Me not, keepeth not My sayings.” John 14:24. Christ declares, “If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; ... He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.” [John 14:15, 16, 21.] To the church in Sardis He says, “Thou hast a few names even in Sardis, which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white; for they are worthy.” [Revelation 3:4.]13LtMs, Ms 143, 1898, par. 26
God’s principles of righteousness must be maintained. Love, compassion, and tenderness are proffered to all who will be obedient. But God says, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” This is the test, the proof, of our love. “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me; and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and I will manifest myself unto him.” [John 14:15, 21.] “If a man love me, he will keep my words; and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.13LtMs, Ms 143, 1898, par. 27
“He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings; and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.” [Verses 23, 24.] “He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the word of God perfected: Hereby know we that we are in him. He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also to walk, even as he walked. Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.” [1 John 2:4-7.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

Every loyal heart will study to know the truth. John states the truth so plainly that a child may understand it. “If ye love me keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him.” [John 14:15-17.] Do we choose to be numbered with those who cannot discern the truth, who are so blinded by the deceptive power of the enemy that they see not Him who is the express image of the Father’s person?13LtMs, Lt 31, 1898, par. 31
The followers of Christ are of another class altogether. “But ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless; I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me; because I live, ye shall live also.” “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me; and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. ... If a man love me, he will keep my words, and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not, keepeth not my sayings, and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.” [Verses 17-19, 21, 23, 24.] The word of a human being is not to be received and believed without question. We must first ask, Do they speak in harmony with the world? Do they refuse a plain “Thus saith the Lord” because they see that it involves a cross?Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

The gospel presents its test: “If ye love Me keep My commandments.” Obedience to His specified commandments is the sign of your loyalty to God. “And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you forever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth Him not, neither knoweth Him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless.” Oh, why cannot you believe this? “I will come unto you. ... He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me. And he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself unto him.” [John 14:15-18, 21.] What a wonderful condescension is this! You are not in any case to testify to the world by words, by pen, or voice that it makes no difference whether you obey God’s law or transgress it. Will you refuse to obey?9LtMs, Ms 112, 1894, par. 7
“If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: And the word that ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.” [Verses 22-24.] Bear in mind, every human being, you are making your decisions now, in the probation granted you, for time and for eternity. All your works are brought in a review before God. “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.” John 15:7.Christ’s Object Lessons

There are only two classes in the world today, and only two classes will be recognized in the judgment—those who violate God’s law and those who obey it. Christ gives the test by which to prove our loyalty or disloyalty. “If ye love Me,” He says, “keep My commandments.... He that hath My commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth Me. And he that loveth Me shall be loved of My Father, and I will love him, and will manifest Myself to him.... My heart is full of intercession to my heavenly Father that the Holy Spirit, whose office work it is to take of the things of God and show them unto the truth-seekers, may send these things home to the hearts of all. We will stand yoked up with Christ as laborers together with God. We can of ourselves do nothing. Christ is the Sin Bearer; He is the one who can forgive sins, and if He works to draw poor, perishing souls, it is the greatest honor we can have to draw with Christ, co-operating with the heavenly intelligences. We are seeking to make plain, to those who have not heard, the evidences of the truth. The Word obeyed is life and hope and salvation to all. “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” [John 14:15.] I feel so grateful for these words, for if it were not possible for us to obey the commandments of God, these words would not have been spoken.10LtMs, Lt 25c, 1895, par. 11
“I will pray the Father, and he will send you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him. But ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless, I will come to you.” [Verses 16-18.] What comfort and blessing were these words after the sore trial which had come upon them! “Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more, but ye see me (by faith); because I live, ye shall live also.” [Verse 19.] These precious words were spoken for our benefit. They come sounding down the line to our time, that we may be comforted, and strengthened in hope and faith.10LtMs, Lt 25c, 1895, par. 12
“He that hath my commandments and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me, and he that loveth me, shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself unto him.” [Verse 21.] How grateful I am for these words, and so grateful that we have, through Jesus Christ, granted unto us probationary time, that we can form characters after the similitude of Christ’s character, for all this is promised to those who have the light on the commandments of God, and keep them. “If a man love me, he will keep my words, and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.” [Verse 23.] Shall we not praise God for this assurance? Is it not of more value than silver and gold, riches and honor?10LtMs, Lt 25c, 1895, par. 13
How glad I am, my brother, that you have these promises in keeping the commandments of God. His Word is truth; it endureth for ever and ever. We honor God when we believe His Word, when we believe that He means just what He says. It is [by] appropriating this Word to ourselves, that we feed on the flesh and blood of the Son of God. These words are positive, “If a man love me, he will keep my word.” [Verse 23.] Then, through Christ Jesus giving us grace, which He has promised humanity, we can keep the law of God.10LtMs, Lt 25c, 1895, par. 15
Here again we hear the words of Him who speaks as never man spoke, “He that loveth me not keepeth not my saying, and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.” [Verse 24.] This is the sure testimony, which all who live in the world are hearing. The disobedient are giving their testimony that they love not Jesus Christ and refuse His words, and choose to run the risk of binding up in bundles with the transgressors of the law of God. Those who love Jesus hear the living testimony that they are commandment-keepers, loyal and true to the God of heaven.10LtMs, Lt 25c, 1895, par. 16
Again and again I have asked as I stood before the congregation, “Whose side are you on? Is your influence with the great rebel, standing under the banner [of] revolt, or are you standing under the blood-stained banner of Prince Emmanuel?” It is time we were wholly on the side of Christ. “But the Comforter which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” [Verse 26.]10LtMs, Lt 25c, 1895, par. 17
“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you, not as the world giveth, give I unto you: let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” [Verse 27.] We have the truth, precious, sacred, testifying truth. Open, my dear brother, open the door of your heart wide unto Jesus; let Him come into the soul temple; treat Him as your honored guest; and He will fill your soul with His great love. He will give you to drink of the water of life, and will give you the eternal riches of the heavenly world. One soul, saved in the kingdom of God, is worth more than the whole world.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

We have darkness enough <surrounding us in this world.> Let us be careful not to communicate <any> darkness to another mind. Catch the divine rays of light from heaven and flash them upon the pathway of others. I know there are many here who are discouraged, many who are tempted by the enemy, and who will be in danger of yielding, but for this there is a remedy. When Christ left this earth, He gave to us a legacy, not of gold, not of silver, not of real estate. He said, “Peace I leave with you, my peace give I unto you: not as the world giveth give I unto you.” [John 14:27.] This is the gift that cometh down from heaven. His peace He leaves with those who will accept it. Let us walk in the footsteps of Jesus, in order that the Holy Spirit, which is the representative of Christ, may be our Counsellor to guide us in every perplexity. In your trouble, go to the Lord in prayer. He knows everyone of us by name, and He knows all our temptation. If we come to Him in our perplexity, and say, Lord, I cast my helpless soul upon Thee; I want Thy help; you will <receive> help. <He that hath a meek and contrite spirit will receive the heavenly anointing.>10LtMs, Ms 18, 1895, par. 18
“What shall we do that we might work the works of God?” [John 6:28.] Is the answer in any of your minds? Listen to what Jesus says, “If ye love me keep my commandments.” [John 14:15.] “This is the love of God that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.” [John 6:29.] Our faith must take right hold of Jesus Christ, and He will supply all our spiritual necessities, so that we can overcome the world, the flesh, and the devil, and have our souls linked to the heart of infinite love. If the rich stream of His salvation flows to us, it will be in us a well of water, springing up into everlasting life.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 15 (1900)

The Lord has a vineyard to be worked, and He calls for you. He wants you to take a decided stand, not hesitatingly, as though you were in uncertainty, but decidedly and firmly, as a man who is conscientiously determined that he will not stand in rebellion before the heavenly universe and before the people of the world, who now know you as one who, seeing the truth but fearing the results of obedience, is inclined to continue to offend God by continuing in transgression. Is it not time you showed your colors decidedly as appreciating the infinite sacrifice Christ has made in your behalf? He says, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” [John 14:15.] Cannot you now understand the will of God?15LtMs, Lt 70, 1900, par. 5
God is your Father; Christ is your Creator and Redeemer. Who owns you then? You are not your own keeper. You have been bought with a price. Hear the Saviour’s voice, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” [Verse 15.] Will you obey this Word, or will you seek to avoid the cross which seems so full of humiliation? On which side are you standing? On the side of the Lord Jesus Christ, whose property you are, or on the side of the enemy, who is striving, and who will continue to strive, for your soul? Your daughters have in their youth taken their stand. Your wife has taken her stand. Shall the father and husband (houseband), the head and priest of the home, show less courage than his wife and children?15LtMs, Lt 70, 1900, par. 7
God will give you all the light you need if you will place yourself in the channel of light. The Lord has been preparing your way in your family. Your wife and children need you to help them. The Lord calls upon you to surrender to Him just as you are. Exchange banners. Cast down the banner of disobedience and grasp the banner of Christ. The Saviour declares, “I will pray the Father for you, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not (by faith), neither knoweth him; but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.” [Verses 16, 17.] Whose side are you on? Are you on the right side? Is Christ dwelling in you? Does His Spirit abide with you?15LtMs, Lt 70, 1900, par. 8
Christ sees you standing in peril, and undecided. If you will, you can settle the question once and forever. Christ is trying to help you over the threshold. He says, “I will not leave you comfortless. I will come to you” [Verse 18] if you step over the threshold of disobedience, and stand in loyalty under the banner of truth and righteousness. “He that hath my commandments and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me; and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself unto him.” [Verse 21.] Without delay step over the threshold to the side of Christ.15LtMs, Lt 70, 1900, par. 9
Do not longer continue to be recognized as the enemy of God, but show yourself an obedient son, a member of the royal family. With your wife and children, say, Here I am, Lord, with all my family under the banner of truth and righteousness. Accept me now. I make no terms with Thee; Thou hast made the terms. I will serve Thee as a loyal subject of Thy kingdom, that I may receive Thy benediction: “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you; not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” [Verse 27.]15LtMs, Lt 70, 1900, par. 10

How many are seeking earthly treasures; and they fancy that if they have them they will be as if in Paradise. But if they had the treasures that are in Paradise, they would not be at rest. Their minds are constantly troubled. They think that if they could obtain their desires, they would have peace. But these longing souls forget that they carry the disturber of this peace with them, and it has become part of their existence. If they would seek for the peace Christ came to give, they would find rest. He declared, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. There are souls famishing for the bread of life, thirsting for the waters of salvation, and woe unto that man who by pen or voice shall turn them aside into false paths. The Spirit of God is appealing to men, presenting to them their moral obligation to love and serve Him with heart, might, mind, and strength, and to love their neighbors as themselves. The Holy Spirit moves upon the inner self until it becomes conscious of the divine power of God, and every spiritual faculty is quickened to decided action. Jesus said, “And I will pray the Father and He shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever.” [John 14:16.] A deep, thorough work is to be wrought in the soul, which the world cannot see. Those who know not what it is to have an experience in the things of God, who know not what it is to be justified by faith, who have not the witness of the Spirit that they are accepted of Jesus Christ, are in need of being born again. “The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.” [John 3:8.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

Jesus said He would give us the Comforter. [John 14:16.] What is the Comforter? It is the Holy Spirit of God. What is the Holy Spirit? It is the representative of Jesus Christ, it is our advocate that stands by our side and places our petitions before the Father all fragrant with His merits. There He accepts the petition of the humblest saint. He doesn’t ask you how much money you have, or how heavy you are loaded with property, but [He accepts] the very humblest saint that brings his petition to God, and [his] thank offering is made fragrant with the riches of His grace, and the Father accepts it as your offering, and the blessing comes to you, grace for grace. As you pour out your thank offering, God is glorified, and He gives you more. As you pour out thanksgiving He gives you more joy. We learn to praise God from whom all blessings flow. Shall we not begin right here to turn over the page and forget our murmurings and complainings and faultfinding, and educate the tongue to courteous words, and loving words, and sympathetic words, and tender kindness for one another of His children? Let us show Christ formed within, the hope of glory, by the fruit that we bear, and thus we can evidence to the world a living Saviour. He is not in Joseph’s new tomb. No, He is risen. He has risen a live, not a dead, Christ. We have a living Christ. He arose. He broke the fetters of the tomb. In triumph He rejoices over the rent sepulchre of Joseph. “I am the resurrection and the life.” [John 11:25.] Glory to God! I praise Him, the resurrection and the life! You have got a living Saviour. Then hang your helpless souls on Jesus Christ. Abide in the vine, and bear fruit to His glory, and His joy shall be in you, and your joy shall be full. May the blessing of God rest upon these hearers. May the Holy Spirit of God impress the heart, and may the character reveal the loveliness of Jesus Christ, because you are His representatives, is my prayer.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

The Lord has provided for the descent of the Holy Spirit upon His workers, and everyone who sincerely seeks God will find Him. We are to come boldly to the throne of grace, and seek the footstool of mercy. We are to believe that the Lord hears and answers our prayer. “Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil.” We need to practice these words of inspiration. Let there be no linking up with sin, but hate sin with abhorrence. “Cleave to that which is good.” Be cemented with that which is good. Cherish an unalterable attachment to whatever leads to God or contributes to the well-being of our fellow creatures. “Be kindly affectionate one to another with brotherly love, in honor preferring one another.” This is one of the Christian graces that is strangely neglected. “Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer.” [Romans 12:9-12.] We have every encouragement to do this, for He who pledged His life to save the fallen race, has pledged Himself to be our personal Intercessor, saying, “I will pray the Father for you.” [See John 14:16.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

I in them, and thou in me: that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them as thou hast loved me.” [John 17:22, 23.] The eternal Father is waiting for us to take our eyes off finite men, and place our dependence in God.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

What fullness is expressed in the words, “I am the light of the world.” “I am the Bread of Life.” “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” “I am the Good Shepherd.” “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” [John 8:12; 6:35; 14:16; 10:11, 10.] This life is what we must have, and we must have it more abundantly. God will breathe this life into every soul that dies to self and lives to Christ. But entire self-renunciation is required. Unless this takes place, we carry with us the evil that destroys our happiness. But when self is crucified, Christ lives in us, and the power of the Spirit attends our efforts. This Day With God

It is not essential for you to know and be able to define just what the Holy Spirit is. Christ tells us that the Holy Spirit is the Comforter, and the Comforter is the Holy Ghost, “the Spirit of truth, which the Father shall send in My name.” “I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth Him not, neither knoweth Him: but ye know Him, for He dwelleth with you, and shall be in you” [John 14:16, 17]. This refers to the omnipresence of the Spirit of Christ, called the Comforter. Again Jesus says, “I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. The testimony borne by the apostles confirms the teaching of the Old and New Testaments. The testimonies that they have borne come down the ages to our time, that we might have fellowship with the men who bore these testimonies. Before Christ left His disciples, He declared that the Holy Spirit would bring all things to their remembrance. “I will pray the Father,” He said, “and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth Him not, neither knoweth Him; but ye know Him; for He dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. ... When Jesus was about to ascend on high, He said to His disciples. “I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you for ever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth Him not, neither knoweth Him: but ye know Him; for He dwelleth with you, and shall be in you” (John 14:16, 17). O how sad it is that so few understand the Word as it reads! How much is comprehended in the words: “I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. Christ promised His followers, “If I go away, I will send another comforter, that he may abide with you forever.” [John 16:7; 14:16.] With this divine endowment the human agent is qualified to work in Christ’s lines. Christ continued, “He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have spoken unto you.” [Verse 26.] Individually living the life of Christ, His followers become living, working agencies. They possess the character of Christ. They have the love of Christ, His faith, His hope, His oneness with the Father. They lean on Christ as their only staff and sufficiency. They are Christ’s living witnesses. By their words, their spirit, their true courtesy, their influence, by their every action they testify of Christ. A power goes out from these human agencies, bearing the testimony that they are laborers with God, that they have communion with their Saviour.Patriarchs and Prophets
Introduction
PP 19.2
While it is not now as it was in the beginning, when man in his holiness and innocence had personal instruction from his Maker, still man is not left without a divine teacher which God has provided in His representative, the Holy Spirit. So we hear the apostle Paul declaring that a certain divine “illumination” is the privilege of the followers of Christ; and that they are “enlightened” by being made “partakers of the Holy Ghost.” Hebrews 10:32; 6:4. John also says, “Ye have an unction from the Holy One.” 1 John 2:20. And Christ promised the disciples, as He was about to leave them, that He would send them the Holy Spirit as a comforter and guide to lead them into all truth. John 14:16, 26.PP 22.3
But the Day of Pentecost was in fulfillment of other prophecies besides that of Joel. It fulfilled the words of Christ Himself as well. In His last discourse to His disciples before His crucifixion, He said to them: “I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, ... Even the Spirit of truth.” John 14:16, 17. “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things.” Verse 26. “Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guideyou into all truth.” Chapter 16:13. And after Christ had risen from the dead, He said to the disciples, “Behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: But tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.” Luke 24:49.Sermons and Talks, vol. 1

Just before His crucifixion the Saviour said to His disciples: “I will not leave you comfortless.” “I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you forever.” “When He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will show you things to come.” “He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” John 14:18, 16; 16:13; 14:26.The Acts of the Apostles
Chapter 5—The Gift of the Spirit
AA 47.1
When Christ gave His disciples the promise of the Spirit, He was nearing the close of His earthly ministry. He was standing in the shadow of the cross, with a full realization of the load of guilt that was to rest upon Him as the Sin Bearer. Before offering Himself as the sacrificial victim, He instructed His disciples regarding a most essential and complete gift which He was to bestow upon His followers—the gift that would bring within their reach the boundless resources of His grace. “I will pray the Father,” He said, “and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you forever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth Him not, neither knoweth Him: but ye know Him; for He dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.” John 14:16, 17. The Saviour was pointing forward to the time when the Holy Spirit should come to do a mighty work as His representative. The evil that had been accumulating for centuries was to be resisted by the divine power of the Holy Spirit.AA 52.3
To the repentant sinner, hungering and thirsting for righteousness, the Holy Spirit reveals the Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world. “He shall receive of Mine, and shall show it unto you,” Christ said. “He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” John 16:14; 14:26.Ellen G. In the light of Andrews’ observations, it is easier to see why Seventh-day Adventists regard Mrs. White’s writings as an exaltation and definition of the Bible text, but not an addition to or a contradiction of Bible teaching. Mrs. White’s inspiration†In a broad sense the inspiration of the prophet included the “divers manners” (Hebrews 1:1) in which he received guidance from the Lord. In Mrs. White’s case note the following from the Testimonies, volume 5: 1. Visions, pages 671, 686; 2. Mind enlightened while reading the Bible, page 686; 3. Mind imbued with thoughts while preaching, page 678; 4. The accumulated wisdom of many revelations from God over a period of time, which qualified her to write messages of counsel not necessarily associated with any immediate vision, pages 683-691.As in ancient times the Lord spoke in divers manners to His messengers, so in Ellen White’s case she received the revelations and then communicated the truths she received orally and in writing to the church. must not be confused with the illumination of the Bible text available to all thinking, praying Christians (see John 14:16, 17, 26). Inspiration by the Holy Spirit embodies the reception and conveyance of truth while the illumination suggests an influencing of attitudes and spiritual perception.

I hope you can be with us when W. C. White is here, which will be in about two weeks. Then you can see just how matters stand and do your part to make everything right. This is your first duty, and may the Lord help you that you shall not have run in vain, neither labored in vain. You need to be strong in God and in the power of His might, not strong in your own strength. It is time that you gave your brethren and sisters and the world an example of what a Christian minister should be, both in the pulpit and out of the pulpit. You are not safe unless you are daily learning meekness and lowliness of heart in the school of Christ. Every day we need the converting, transforming grace of Christ upon our souls. Every day we need the Comforter that Christ promised to send after He should ascend to His Father. He said, “And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him; but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. ... I pled with God in your behalf, that the Spirit of truth may abide with you, that the work of the Comforter may be seen and realized by you. You said in your letter to me that you would not labor again until you were a converted man, for this you thought from what I had written was your duty. I can tell better what I said when I have seen that letter, but, my brother whom I love in the Lord, this is the very point I urge upon you—and Christ promised the Comforter to “bring all things to your remembrance” [verse 26]—I want you to remember aright and to represent all things in a right light to your own soul as well as to others.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 7 (1891-1892)

It is not essential for you to know and be able to define just what the Holy Spirit is. Christ tells us that the Holy Spirit is the Comforter, and the Comforter is the Holy Ghost, “the Spirit of truth, which the Father shall send in my name.” [John 14:26.] “I will pray the Father, and he shall send you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him; but ye know him, for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.” [Verses 16, 17.] This refers to the omnipresence of the Spirit of Christ, called the Comforter. Again Jesus says, “I have many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit, when he, the Spirit of truth is come, he will guide you into all truth.” [John 16:12, 13.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

He had taken the fisherman and the publican from their lowly employment that he might educate and train them to communicate to the world the message of saving grace. He had brought them into covenant relationship with himself, as his chosen ones, his adopted children, and was making them one with himself and with his Father. When his disciples manifested the fact that they beheld divinity in his humanity, he rejoiced in spirit that though this knowledge was not possessed by the wise and prudent, yet it had been revealed to them. They beheld Christ “whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him; but ye know him, for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.” [John 14:17.] Christ their educator was teaching them by precept and example, and bringing them out of their ignorance of God and Christ and of themselves, into covenant relation with the Father, taking them from the guilt of sin and the condemnation of the law, into the liberty of the children of God, that being fully accepted, they might behold him who is full of grace and truth, and come into the knowledge of their oneness with Christ Jesus. Hereafter they would read the Old Testament Scripture not as the sayings of the rabbis, not as the doctrines of the Scribes and Pharisees, but as a new revelation from God. In successive ages, and under different circumstances the prophets had given testimonies concerning the coming Messiah. One had testified concerning one part of his life and ministry, and another had testified of another part, but their revelation all clustered about the cross. They had foretold that the powers of earth inspired by Satan would do unto him as they should list, and that Christ would be betrayed, condemned and crucified. Jews and Greeks confederated together against the world’s Redeemer, and crucified the Lord of glory in fulfillment of prophetic utterances. After the resurrection and ascension of Christ, the disciples set forth Jesus Christ as the Messiah in the demonstration of the Spirit and with power, and showed that Christ is the truth symbolized by all the ancient types of the Jewish religion, the One foretold by all the prophets.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 23 (1908)

Our highest privilege is to honor Jesus Christ. We need now, in this year 1908, a continual spirit of submission to the will and requirements of God. His word is plain. If we will seek for a personal experience in submitting to its requirements, we may appropriate the promise, “The meek will He guide in judgment; and the meek will He teach His way.” [Psalm 25:9.] As we study the Word prayerfully, with an obedient heart, the Holy Spirit will be with us to make upon our minds the correct application. This is a privilege that the world cannot receive or understand; for they have not the “Spirit of truth, whom,” Christ declared, “the world cannot receive, because it seeth Him not, neither knoweth Him.” But to His disciples He says, “‘Ye know Him, for He dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.’ Ye ‘have the mind of Christ.’” [John 14:17; 1 Corinthians 2:16.]The Desire of Ages

The honored men of the world, the so-called great and wise men, with all their boasted wisdom, could not comprehend the character of Christ. They judged Him from outward appearance, from the humiliation that came upon Him as a human being. But to fishermen and publicans it had been given to see the Invisible. Even the disciples failed of understanding all that Jesus desired to reveal to them; but from time to time, as they surrendered themselves to the Holy Spirit’s power, their minds were illuminated. They realized that the mighty God, clad in the garb of humanity, was among them. Jesus rejoiced that though this knowledge was not possessed by the wise and prudent, it had been revealed to these humble men. Often as He had presented the Old Testament Scriptures, and showed their application to Himself and His work of atonement, they had been awakened by His Spirit, and lifted into a heavenly atmosphere. Of the spiritual truths spoken by the prophets they had a clearer understanding than had the original writers themselves. Hereafter they would read the Old Testament Scriptures, not as the doctrines of the scribes and Pharisees, not as the utterances of wise men who were dead, but as a new revelation from God. They beheld Him “whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth Him not, neither knoweth Him: but ye know Him; for He dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.” John 14:17.From Heaven With Love

The end is near, and we want to keep the future world in view. The burden of my prayer is that the churches may be aroused from their moral torpor and awaken to earnest, interested endeavor. Oh, that they could see and understand that in this last conflict the Captain of the Lord’s host is leading on the armies of heaven, and mingling in the ranks and fighting our battles for us. We shall have apostasies; we expect them. “They will go out from us, because they were not of us” [cf: 1 John 2:19]. “Every plant, which My heavenly Father has not planted, shall be rooted up” (Matthew 15:13).The Ellen G. There is no safe peace without the presence of the Spirit of Christ. There is no real peace except that which flows from the cross of Calvary. Christ is accepted as a theory in the mind before He becomes the Prince of Peace in the heart. But that He may become the Prince of Peace in the heart, He has promised to impart to us His Spirit. He said, “I will not leave you comfortless.” [John 14:18.] The comfort of the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the gift of the Holy Spirit. The measure of the love of God to man is found in Christ. He is the medium through which the knowledge of the love of God is imparted. John writes, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” [John 3:16.] God so loved us that He gave His well-beloved Son. It is not that He gave Christ, and therefore He loved us; but that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us as a manifestation of the Father’s compassion.Mind, Character, and Personality, vol. 2

Oh, how gracious is our Lord! “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” [Hebrews 13:5.] “I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands.” [Isaiah 49:16.] There is a promise given that the power that is Omnipotent will be given, even the Holy Spirit, the Comforter. “I will not leave you comfortless.” [John 14:18.] The Holy Spirit is to be given for the asking. Only think of it, He is more willing to give the Holy Spirit to them that ask Him than parents are to give good gifts unto their children. Then let us rejoice, let us be glad. Let us not look at the hellish work of the powers of darkness until hope and courage shall fail. A Never-Failing Friend—This is Jesus, the life of every grace, the life of every promise, the life of every ordinance, the life of every blessing. Jesus is the substance, the glory and fragrance, the very life itself. “He that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life” (John 8:12). Then the royal path cast up for the ransomed to walk in is not discouraging darkness. Our pilgrimage would indeed be lonely and painful were it not for Jesus. “I will not,” He says, “leave you comfortless” (John 14:18). Then let us gather every registered promise. God calls for everyone to stand in a sanctified knowledge that Christ is abiding in him, and he in Christ. Then when he is in trouble, he will come right to the Word, and see what it says. ‘I will not leave you comfortless; I will come to you,’ is the promise. I think of the meditation of Christ and the promise, “I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you” (John 14:18). The agency of the Holy Spirit is to combine with human effort and all heaven is engaged in the work of preparing a people for to stand in these last days. The end is near, and we want to keep the future world in view. The burden of my prayer is that the churches may be aroused from their moral torpor and awaken to earnest, interested endeavor. Oh, that they could see and understand that in this last conflict the Captain of the Lord’s host is leading on the armies of heaven and mingling in the ranks and fighting our battles for us. We shall have apostasies; we expect them. “They will go out from us because they were not of us” (1 John 2:19). “Every plant, which My heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up” (Matthew 15:13).Our High Calling

If we educated our souls to have more faith, more love, greater patience, a more perfect trust in our heavenly Father, we would have more peace and happiness as we pass through the conflicts of this life. The Lord is not pleased to have us fret and worry ourselves out of the arms of Jesus. He is the only source of every grace, the fulfillment of every promise, the realization of every blessing.... Our pilgrimage would indeed be lonely were it not for Jesus. “I will not leave you comfortless,” (John 14:18) He says to us. We must give heed to the light which God has permitted to shine upon our pathway; we must show before all heaven that we appreciate every ray of light; we must reflect that light upon others. Never are we to be beguiled by the sophistry of Satan to tempt any human being to depend on another human mind for healing. God alone is the One who can heal. Those whose minds and bodies are diseased are to behold Christ as the Restorer of mind and body. His assurance is so full: “I will not leave you comfortless; I will come to you. Faith the Evidence of Christianity—When you receive help and comfort, sing to the praise of God. Talk with God. Thus you will become a friend of God. You will rely on Him. You will obtain a faith that will trust whether you feel like trusting or not. Remember that feeling is not an evidence that you are a Christian. Implicit faith in God shows that you are His child. Trust in God. He will never disappoint you. He says, “I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world seeth Me no more; but ye see Me: because I live, ye shall live also” (John 14:18, 19). We do not see Christ in person. It is by faith that we behold Him. His continual living agency on high ensures the fact that his death and resurrection brings to them life and immortality.12LtMs, Lt 75, 1897, par. 6

His death and resurrection are to be ever kept fresh in the minds of those who receive and believe in Him as their Redeemer. The resurrection of Christ is the assurance of our salvation. He is the source of our life. “Because I live, ye shall live also.” [Verse 19.] We have a living Saviour. In this we may all rejoice. Christ is not in Joseph’s new tomb, but is our Friend at court, pleading in our behalf. Approach your Saviour with full assurance of faith, for He ever liveth to make intercession for you. Heavenly agencies have been set to work for the purpose of enlightening ignorance, and overpowering the sinfulness of the world, and surrounding the people of God with an element of light and loveliness. Down along the lines to our time come the words of encouragement, “Be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” [John 16:33.] The Battle, invisible to mortal eyes, is going on, and if we are in agreement with God, we may triumphantly exclaim, “Because He lives, I shall live also.” [John 14:19.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 19 (1904)

Control of Mind Over Mind

There is something better for us to engage in than the control of humanity by humanity. The physician should educate the people to look from the human to the divine. Instead of teaching the sick to depend upon human beings for the cure of soul and body, he should direct them to the One who can save to the uttermost all who come unto Him. He who made man’s mind knows what the mind needs. God alone is the One who can heal. Those whose minds and bodies are diseased are to behold in Christ the restorer. “Because I live, He says, “ye shall live also.” John 14:19. This is the life we are to present to the sick, telling them that if they have faith in Christ as the restorer, if they co-operate with Him, obeying the laws of health, and striving to perfect holiness in His fear, He will impart to them His life. When we present Christ to them in this way, we are imparting a power, a strength, that is of value; for it comes from above. Whatever clouds overcast the sky, whatever storms surge around the soul, this anchor holds firm, and we may be sure of the victory. With the eye of faith you may see the land that is afar off. It is the perpetual life of the church to love God supremely, and to love others as they love themselves. There was but little love for God or man, and God gave to His messengers just what the people needed. Those who received the message were greatly blessed, for they saw the bright rays of the Sun of Righteousness, and life and hope sprang up in their hearts. They were beholding Christ. “Fear not,” is His everlasting assurance; “I am he that liveth and was dead, and behold, I am alive for evermore.” [Revelation 1:18.] “Because I live, ye shall live also.” [John 14:19.] The blood of the spotless Lamb of God the believers apply to their own hearts.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

“I am the bread of life.” [Verse 35.] The doing of the words of Christ will give eternal life to the soul. The constant eating of the Word and practicing the teaching of the Word is eternal life to all who eat His Word. [They] will be eating His flesh and drinking His blood and an important union is formed between every soul and Christ through the perfect unity with His spirit in perfect obedience to His Word. All such will show that the Word of God is obeyed. Pride and selfishness are killed. The soul, body, and spirit are brought into perfect subjection to Jesus Christ. The once-polluted habitations of pride and selfishness are purified, cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ, and the testimony of [Paul and] John is voiced by them: “In him dwelleth the fulness of the Godhead bodily.” [Colossians 2:9.] “And of his fulness have we all received, and grace for grace.” [John 1:16.] As they receive the grace from Christ they impart that grace, and by imparting, increase of grace is the return. If they do not impart that grace the supply is not continued. The vine, used as a lesson to the disciples, was to be repeated or the benefit of those who should hear their words. It would be an impossibility for these messengers to give an accurate account of their Master’s words when so many things had been said and of such importance to future generations; and Christ had said to them, “There things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” [John 14:25, 26.] Those words which He had spoken to them, He would inspire holy men to write; and these things have come to us in the New Testament.12LtMs, Ms 66, 1897, par. 2
Throughout the fifteenth chapter of John, Christ kept up the figure of the living connection which the branches must have with the Vine. This is presented as a positive necessity if they would be fruit-bearing branches. “Without me,” He says, “ye can do nothing” that will be acceptable to God. [Verse 5.] “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the Vine, no more can ye except ye abide in me.” [Verse 4.] A vital connection with Christ is essential for spiritual life. The expressions weaken our position, for there are many who will consider you an extremist, and will lose the rich lessons you have for them upon the very subjects they need to know.... My brother, it is hard for the mind to comprehend this point, and do not confuse any mind with ideas that will not harmonize with the Word. Please to consider that under the teaching of Christ many of the disciples were lamentably ignorant; but when the Holy Spirit that Jesus promised came upon them and made the vacillating Peter the champion of faith, what a transformation in his character! But do not lay one pebble, for a soul that is weak in the faith to stumble over, in overwrought presentations or expressions. Be ever consistent, calm, deep, and solid. Do not go to any extreme in anything, but keep your feet on solid rock. O precious, precious Saviour. “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him” (John 14:21).Selected Messages Book 3
Christ Stands by the Side of Persecuted Saints

Never is the tempest-tried soul more dearly loved by his Saviour than when he is suffering reproach for the truth’s sake. When for the truth’s sake the believer stands at the bar of unrighteous tribunals, Christ stands by his side. All the reproaches that fall upon the human believer fall upon Christ in the person of His saints. “I will love him,” said Christ, “and will manifest myself to him” (John 14:21). Christ is condemned over again in the person of His believing disciples. That I May Know Him

If we can bear persecution for His dear name’s sake, His love becomes a ruling power in our hearts, for we have the assurance that nothing can separate us from the love of Christ. Then when you say there are no conditions, and some expressions are made quite broad, you burden the minds, and some cannot see consistency in your expressions. The lofty pattern is set before us. The religion of Jesus Christ is to raise us to a higher, holier standard to meet the divine likeness of Christ’s character. “He that hath My commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth Me.” John 14:21. All who are abiding in Christ as the branch abides in the vine will show themselves fruitful. By their fruit-bearing properties they will represent the character of the Vine. God requires of every soul of us far more than we give Him. He requires the whole heart, the whole mind, the whole strength. All we are belongs to Jesus. In our warfare we have Christ’s promise, “He that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.” [John 14:21.] He manifested Himself to John, who had been banished by his persecutors to the lonely isle of Patmos. But there He who rules the earth and keeps the waters in their appointed channel, manifested Himself to John. “I John, who also am your brother and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ. I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last,” “the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.” [Revelation 1:9-11, 8.]In Heavenly Places

We have seen the power of God in human vessels as they have presented the truth at these meetings. Several have decided to keep the Sabbath, but there have been such crowds that have been to the meetings it is impossible to know in regard to those who are convinced of the truth and who will obey. It will take much personal labor. We have not seen, even in America, as large a class of such noble looking persons out to hear and manifest so intense an interest as we have seen here on this ground. We have not the mammoth tent as in America and have not the seating capacity; many, very many have to stand, but the Lord is in our midst. “He that hath my commandments and keepeth them he it is that loveth me; and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him and will manifest myself unto him.” [John 14:21.] What a precious promise! We hope that such glory will be experienced as I was shown in my dream would come to the people of God who would follow on to know the Lord. There was an awakening among the people of God. I heard the voice of supplication and prayer, mingled with faith, and words were spoken, “He doth manifest himself unto us.” [See John 14:21.] The Word of the Lord in promises given to His people was coming from human lips that seemed to be touched with a live coal from off the altar, and words sweet and heavenly were spoken. These words were spoken: “And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.” [Isaiah 60:3.] Words were spoken, “He hath sanctified me unto himself. The lost sheep of God’s fold are scattered in every place, and the work that should be done to save them is not being done. In the fourteenth chapter of John a true test is presented to every man. Here we are told of our obligation to obey the commandments of God. Christ says, “If ye love Me, keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth Him not, neither knoweth Him: but ye know Him; for He dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.... He that hath My commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth Me, and he that loveth Me shall be loved of My Father, and I will love him, and will manifest Myself to him.... If a man love Me, he will keep My words: and My Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him” [verses 15-17, 21, 23]. These words are not to be trifled with, for they bear witness to our obligation to obey all the commandments. This is where the churches are lacking. They do not keep the commandments of God, but are transgressors of the law. Those who have a genuine love for Christ will reveal this love by their obedience.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

I am come, Christ said, to set up a new kingdom. Except a man be born of the Spirit, he cannot be enrolled as a subject of My kingdom. “If ye love me, keep my commandments. How can we express our love for Christ? “If ye love me,” He said, “keep my commandments. I will not leave you comfortless .... Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more.” [John 14:15-19.] Feeling no need of Me, it is seeking for the perishable things of earth. “But ye see me; because I live, ye shall live also.” [Verse 19.]15LtMs, Ms 14, 1900, par. 17
“But ye see me; because I live, ye shall live also.” [Verse 19.] Christ is with you, to enlighten your minds, to lead you to call upon Him. As you do this, He will hear your prays and will purify your hearts. You will behold Him as The Way, the Truth, and the Life. Those who follow Christ do not walk in accordance with the ways of the world. They are not conformed to the world. They ask God for Christ’s sake to help them, and they receive the help they ask for. They are enlightened, and are gifted by God with the power to discern the matchless love and wonderful charms of Jesus Christ. They can never feel lonely or comfortless.15LtMs, Ms 14, 1900, par. 18
“At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me; and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?” Let all observe the answer. “Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words; and my Father will love him; and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.” [Verses 20-23.] Wonderful indeed is this promise! Do we comprehend it?
