It is a beautiful morning. We have no seasickness as yet. Last evening we enjoyed a beautiful sunset. The broad ocean was all that we could see surrounding us, and the sun went out of sight in the broad waters. We went into the dining room to attend services. Under the Episcopalian services, prayers were read, and chapters in the Old and New Testaments that were very appropriate for the occasion. The hymns sung were excellent in sentiment. The chapter read first was in Jeremiah. The second was in the New Testament in regard to the shipwreck of Paul. I wrote eight pages and prepared a reported article for the press. We were on deck most of the time.

“Thus saith the Lord of hosts, They shall thoroughly glean the remnant of Israel as a vine: turn back thine hand as a grape gatherer into the baskets. To whom shall I speak, and give warning, that they may hear? Behold, their ear is uncircumcised, and they cannot hearken: behold, the world of the Lord is unto them a reproach; they have no delight in it. Therefore I am full of the fury of the Lord: I am weary of holding in: I will pour it out upon the children abroad, and upon the assembly of the young men together: for even the husband with the wife shall be taken, the aged with him that is full of days. And their houses shall be turned unto others, with their fields and wives together: for I will stretch out my hand upon the inhabitants of the land, saith the Lord. For from the least of them even unto the greatest of them every one is given to covetousness; and from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely.” [Jeremiah 6:9-13.]

This action of appealing to human courts, never before entered into by Seventh-day Adventists, has now been done. God has permitted this that you who have been deceived may understand what power is controlling those who have had entrusted to them great responsibilities. Where are God’s sentinels? Where are the men who will stand shoulder to shoulder, heart to heart, with the truth, present truth for this time, in possession of the heart? [Jeremiah 6:10, 13-17; 5:18, quoted.]

They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace. Were they ashamed when they had committed abominations? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore they shall fall among them that fall: at the time that I visit them they shall be cast down, saith the Lord. Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein. Also I set watchmen over you, saying, Hearken to the sound of the trumpet. But they said, We will not hearken.” “Nevertheless in those days, saith the Lord, I will not make a full end with you.” [Jeremiah 6:10, 13-17; 5:18.]

The Spirit of Prophecy, vol. 4

Chapter 15—The Second Angel’s Message

4SP 238.1

Anciently the Lord declared to his servants concerning Israel: “The leaders of this people cause them to err, and they that are led of them are destroyed.” [Isaiah 9:16.] “The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means, and my people love to have it so; and what will ye do in the end thereof?” [Jeremiah 5:31.] “For from the least of them even unto the greatest of them, every one is given to covetousness; and from the prophet even unto the priest, every one dealeth falsely.” [Jeremiah 6:13.] The Jewish church, once so highly favored of the Lord, became an astonishment and a reproach through neglect to improve the blessings granted them. Pride and unbelief led to their ruin. But these scriptures do not apply to ancient Israel only. The character and condition of many nominally Christian churches are here portrayed. Though in possession of far greater blessings than were granted to the Jews, they are following in the steps of that people; and the greater the light and privileges bestowed, the greater the guilt of those who permit them to pass unimproved.

There is an alarming condition of things in our churches. Says the Word of God, “Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good things from you. For among My people are found wicked men: they lay in wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men... the prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and My people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?” (Jeremiah 5:25, 26, 31). “They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of My people slightly, saying, Peace, Peace; when there is no peace” (chapter 6:14). “And now, because ye have done all these works, saith the Lord, and I spake unto you, rising up early and speaking, but ye heard not; and I called you, but ye answered not; therefore will I do unto this house, which is called by My name, wherein ye trust, and unto the place which I gave to you and your fathers, as I have done to Shiloh, And I will cast you out of My sight, as I have cast out all your brethren” (chapter 7:13-15). God will surely fulfill His word to those who will not hear, will not see, and refuse the light that He sends them.

While it is duty for the watchmen to be wide-awake, faithful to discern evil, and understanding the necessities of the cause and work of God, they will frequently be called to bear a plain, pointed testimony to individuals who are in danger. Their testimony must not be given in an impatient spirit, not in an overbearing spirit, not with a domineering spirit, but with the spirit and meekness of Christ. There are two extremes to be avoided, one is the shunning to declare the whole counsel of God, and running into the spirit of revivalists in this age of crying, “Peace, peace, where there is no peace” [Jeremiah 6:14], and weaving into the labors an element which moves the feelings and leaves the heart unchanged. A sensational religion is to be dreaded, for it is hard work when once it has been woven into the experience to ever make the individuals feel that they must go deeper than mere emotional exercise; that they must practice true godliness.

Bible charity is not sentimentalism, but love in active exercise. To heal the hurt of the daughter of my people, slightly, saying, “Peace, peace, when there is no peace,” is called charity. [Jeremiah 6:14.] To confederate together, to call sin holiness and truth, is called charity; but it is the counterfeit article. The false and the spurious are in the world, and we should closely examine our hearts that we may know whether or not we possess the genuine charity. Genuine charity will not create distrust and evil work. It will not blunt the sword of the spirit so that it does no execution. Those who would cover evil under false charity say to the sinner, “It shall be well with thee.” Thank God there is a charity that will not be corrupted; there is a wisdom that cometh from above, that is (mark it) first pure, then peaceable, easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy, and the fruits of righteousness is sown of them that make peace. This is a description of heaven-born, heaven-bred charity.

The end is near and let there not be a confusion of voices to misguide and mislead some astray. To say, “Peace, peace,” to these souls who have long resisted the voice of the True Shepherd, who have contended long against Omnipotence, is to quiet his conscience to [the] sleep of death. [Jeremiah 6:14.] Will man in his pride forsake his own best interests by cherishing thoughts or doing deeds opposed to the mind and Spirit of God? God has been pleased to show me that men who ought to know the voice of the True Shepherd will be more ready to accept the voice of the stranger and follow in unsafe, forbidden paths because of the stubbornness of their human nature.

The enemies of truth and the wicked are alike lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God. When they assemble to worship God He is not with them. They cease to be the solemn assemblies. Christ would be as virtually rejected now, should He come into our world, as at His first advent when He came to His own and His own received Him not. The shepherds of the flock cry to them, “Peace, peace, when there is no peace.” [Jeremiah 6:14.] They will sleep on in carnal pleasure and security until sudden destruction shall come upon them and they shall not escape.

Well, if there is any straight dealing, some are so full of what they call affection, but it is very cheap affection. It is very cheap affection when they will say “peace” when there is no peace. If you should be drawn into such a plan, it would bring much perplexity upon me, and I should have another hard battle to fight. You must take no part in healing “the hurt of the daughter of My people slightly.” [Jeremiah 6:14.] Should the word go forth that Elder and Mrs. Haskell were to take part in teaching the nurses in the Battle Creek Sanitarium, it would be my duty to send forth testimonies, that I do not wish to be called upon to bear.

Those who have not lost their first love will have a care for the souls of those with whom they are associated; but if one in responsible position is found whose morals are tainted with dishonesty or impurity, be on your guard that his godless spirit and example do not contaminate your soul, and so the contagion of evil spread. The moral tone of piety among us must be raised, and in order that it may be, we must take time for the personal culture of heart religion. Let each one feel, I must be an example in patience. I must do good, whether others appreciate my motives or not. I must not stand allied with evil, or cover it with a mantle of false charity. Bible charity is not sentimentalism, but love in active exercise. To heal the hurt of the daughter of My people, slightly, saying, “Peace, peace; when there is no peace” (Jeremiah 6:14; 8:11), is called charity. To confederate together, to call sin holiness and truth, is called charity; but it is the counterfeit article. This is a description of heaven-born, heaven-bred charity. Charity loves the sinner but hates the sin, and will warn him faithfully of his danger, pointing him to the Lamb of God who taketh away the sin of the world. Sin is not to be cloaked, but to be taken away.

God has wrought for you in Jackson, and after what God has done to set the church right, any [who] doubt His work, or do not receive the teachings of God, who has “pled with you face to face” through the weak clay, I fear for them. God can do no more for them than He has done, and you must not have communion with them, but separate them from your company.3

Which members of the Jackson company were subsequently disfellowshipped or broke away? It is well known that Hiram Case and Charles Russell, both of whom were reproved in the June 2 vision, were disfellowshipped and subsequently formed the opposition Messenger Party. Russell apparently was excluded from fellowship within a matter of weeks, but for Hiram Case separation was a drawn-out process. For one thing, Ellen White made a special appeal to Case some weeks after the vision in this letter of June 29. “Dear Brother Case, make thorough work. Dig deep and confess from the bottom.” For a while Case responded positively. In August he even made public confession in a letter to the Review editor. “I have done wrong in using the Lord’s money as I should not. … I do deeply regret, and humbly ask the forgiveness of all my brethren and sisters.” However, events subsequently took a turn for the worse, and on February 17, 1854, leading Michigan brethren decided that “we no longer consider him [Case] qualified to travel and teach the third angel’s message.” (According to J. B. Bezzo, that decision had already been made in Sylvan, Michigan, in January 1854, with fellowship being withdrawn from Case “a short time after.”)

It is a disgrace for those who have been in the truth for years to talk of feeding souls who have been months in the truth, upon milk. It shows that they know but little of the leadings of the Spirit of God and realize not the time that we are living in. Those who embrace the truth now will have to step fast. And there will have to be a breaking of heart before the Lord, a rending of the heart and not the garments.12

There are quite a number in New York who have taken a rebellious course like Dathan and Abiram. They rise up and step in between the plain testimony and the people and virtually say, “Ye take too much upon yourself, seeing the congregation is holy, every one of them.” [Numbers 16:3.] The plain testimony must be given. Sins must be rebuked and wrongs corrected, and the worthless and corrupt be separated from the pure. Some half-hearted ones are not in sympathy with such a work and think that there is too much straight testimony, too much zeal; that the people of God will do well enough and come out well enough without all this, and there are not wrongs about them which others need to be burdened about so much. They give a quieting, soothing testimony calculated to quell their fears. Such are the ones who are crying, “Peace, peace,” when the Lord hath not spoken peace. [Jeremiah 6:14.]

The truth of the Bible is not popular with the world-loving church members, for obedience to it involves a cross that they are not willing to lift. They turn from Christ to worship man, to extol oratory and brilliant talent. It is like the tithing of mint and anise and cumin, while the infinitely weightier matters of the law—mercy and the love of God—are lost sight of. The world is full of ministers who soothe and quiet the consciences of sinners and church members with their pleasing fables. They cry, “Peace, peace” [Jeremiah 6:14], and excuse sin, and give their influence to forward fashionable display and indulgence. They do not rebuke darling sins, and the temple of God is desecrated by the merchandise of buyers and sellers. Suppers and festivals are held, appealing to men to indulge in the gratification of appetite that the church may be sustained and embellished. Examples are set before the youth directly opposite to the lessons taught by Christ in both precept and example. Those who accept the pleasing fables of this world have characters that are spotted and stained with sin. They go in the broad way that leads to death.

These teachers apprehend no special cause of alarm in the present condition of the professed people of God; in their assimilating to the world; and in their lack of love and lack of exercising forbearance toward their brethren. These consider the character of the church generally in a flourishing condition. Therefore they prophesy smooth things and cry, “Peace, peace,” and those who want to have it so, take up the cry, “Peace, peace.” [Jeremiah 6:14; 8:11.] They believe their report and, in the place of being alarmed, are at ease in Zion. They have not sought after idols or graven images to worship, and bowed down before them, but they have idolized one another. Poor, frail, erring man has been praised, petted, exalted, and God saith, “Where is my honor?” [Malachi 1:6.]

The enemy is seeking to divert the minds of our brethren and sisters from the work of preparing a people to stand in these last days. His sophistries are designed to lead minds away from the perils and duties of the hour. They estimate as of little value the light that Christ came from heaven to give to John for His people. They teach that the scenes just before us are not of sufficient importance to receive special attention. They make of no effect the truth of heavenly origin, and rob the people of God of their past experience, giving them instead a false science. “Thus saith the Lord: Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein.” [Jeremiah 6:16.]

A True Prophet Always “Builds”

SS 213.3

Jeremiah sought to encourage the men of Judah to lay spiritual foundations broad and deep, by thorough repentance. Long had they been building with material likened by Jeremiah to dross: “Refuse silver they are called, for the Lord has rejected them.” Jeremiah 6:30, RSV. Now they were urged to build for eternity, casting aside the rubbish of apostasy and using as material pure gold, refined silver, precious stones—faith, obedience, and good works—which alone are acceptable to God. The word of the Lord was, “Return, thou backsliding Israel, ... and I will not cause Mine anger to fall upon you: for I am merciful, saith the Lord, ... for I am married unto you.” Jeremiah 3:12-14.

SS 214.2

Chapter 34—Jeremiah

PK 409.3

As a wise master builder, Jeremiah at the very beginning of his lifework sought to encourage the men of Judah to lay the foundations of their spiritual life broad and deep, by making thorough work of repentance. Long had they been building with material likened by the apostle Paul to wood, hay, and stubble, and by Jeremiah himself to dross. “Refuse silver shall men call them,” he declared of the impenitent nation, “because the Lord hath rejected them.” Jeremiah 6:30, margin. Now they were urged to begin building wisely and for eternity, casting aside the rubbish of apostasy and unbelief, and using as foundation material the pure gold, the refined silver, the precious stones—faith and obedience and good works—which alone are acceptable in the sight of a holy God.

PK 411.1

Jeremiah called their attention repeatedly to the counsels given in Deuteronomy. More than any other of the prophets, he emphasized the teachings of the Mosaic law and showed how these might bring the highest spiritual blessing to the nation and to every individual heart. “Ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein,” he pleaded, “and ye shall find rest for your souls.” Jeremiah 6:16.

PK 419.1

From the day of his call to the close of his ministry, Jeremiah stood before Judah as “a tower and a fortress” against which the wrath of man could not prevail. “They shall fight against thee,” the Lord had forewarned His servant, “but they shall not prevail against thee: for I am with thee to save thee and to deliver thee, saith the Lord. And I will deliver thee out of the hand of the wicked, and I will redeem thee out of the hand of the terrible.” Jeremiah 6:27; 15:20, 21.

Woe unto the wicked! it shall be ill with him: for the reward of his hands shall be given him” (Isaiah 3:10, 11). “Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts” (Jeremiah 6:19). Terrible is this truth, and deeply should it be impressed. Every deed reacts upon the doer. Never a human being but may recognize, in the evils that curse his life, fruitage of his own sowing. Yet even thus we are not without hope....

Chapter 64—A Doomed People

DA 588.2

Christ foresaw that Jerusalem would remain obdurate and impenitent; yet all the guilt, all the consequences of rejected mercy, lay at her own door. Thus it will be with every soul who is following the same course. The Lord declares, “O Israel, thou hast destroyed thyself.” “Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not hearkened unto My words, nor to My law, but rejected it.” Hosea 13:9; Jeremiah 6:19.

God, who searches the heart, takes notice of its desires. He will forgive your past life of frivolity, your pretense, your deception, if you will now repent and seek His grace, that you may live unto Him, and Him alone. “The Lord looketh upon the heart.” [1 Samuel 16:7.] “He remembereth that we are dust.” [Psalm 103:14.] “I will bring evil upon this people, even the fruit of their own thoughts, because they have not harkened unto my words, nor to my law, but rejected it.” [Jeremiah 6:19.] This need not be your case, but it will be unless you turn square about. You cannot make this change yourself, but Jesus can and will do this, if you ask Him and submit yourself wholly to Him, not seeking your own will but God’s will, no longer trying to please self but educating yourself to be useful. Your time is golden and should be spent in seeking to lay up a treasure in the heavens. You must forget your darling self; live no longer to please yourself, but to please God.

Jeremiah’s Courage Saves His Life

SS 218.2

To the close of his ministry, Jeremiah stood as “a tower and a fortress” (Jeremiah 6:27) against which the wrath of man could not prevail. “They shall fight against thee,” the Lord had forewarned His servant, “but they shall not prevail against thee.” Jeremiah 15:20.

Through His servant Jeremiah God speaks, saying, “I have set thee for a tower and a fortress among my people, that thou mayest know and try their way. They are all grievous revolters, walking with slanders: they are brass and iron; they are all corrupters. ... Reprobate silver shall men call them, because the Lord hath rejected them.” [Jeremiah 6:27, 28, 30.]
