The emancipation papers of our race were signed by the blood of the Son of God, and a way was opened for the message of hope and mercy to be carried to the ends of the earth. Now, whoever will may reach forth and take hold of God’s hand, and make peace with Him, and they shall make peace. The heathen are no longer to be wrapped in midnight superstition. The gloom is to disappear before the bright beams of the Sun of Righteousness. The power of hell has been overcome. The truth of the words has been proved: “I am sought of them that asked not for Me; I am found of them that sought Me not: I said, Behold Me, behold Me, unto a nation that was not called by My name” [Isaiah 65:1]. [Isaiah 63:1-3; 60:1-3, quoted.]—Manuscript 101, 1897.

“I am sought of them that asked not for me; I am found of them that sought me not; I said, Behold me, behold me, unto a nation that was not called by my name.” [Isaiah 65:1.] Christ identifies Himself with His people. As their representative and surety, He is represented as placing Himself by their side by the altar; and their prayers ascending to the Father in His name are fragrant with the incense of His own merits. The prayers of the saints multiply the voice of His own intercession, and He gives to the prayers His own efficiency.

The veil has been rent from top to bottom. A new and living way has been opened. And now, all who will may reach forth their hand unto God, and take hold of His strength and make peace with Him, and they shall make peace with Him. Christ’s work did not bring Him any worldly glory. Through the prophet Isaiah He declares, “I am sought of them that asked not for me; I am found of them that sought me not; I said, Behold me, behold me, unto a nation that was not called by my name. I have spread out my hands all the day unto a rebellious people, which walketh in a way which was not good, after their own thoughts; a people that provoketh me to anger continually to my face.” [Isaiah 65:1-3.] Today the Lord Jesus employs every channel through which He can work. But many, by their self-exaltation and self-sufficiency, make it apparent that they are not controlled by the Holy Spirit. Instead, they magnify self into such large proportions that God is not revealed, God is not honored.

As God has shown me in holy vision the travels of the Advent people to the Holy City, and the rich reward to be given those who wait the return of their Lord from the wedding,4

Although the important concept of “the return of their Lord from the wedding” is inserted here, it does not actually form part of the December 1844 vision, but is part of Ellen Harmon’s introductory remarks to Enoch Jacobs, written one year later, reflecting theological insights gained after the December vision. The wedding imagery is first introduced about two months after the first vision, in the vision of February 1845. See notes under Lt 1, 1846 (Feb. 15).

Arose feeling very weary, yet we longed for strength to speak to the people. My husband spoke from Luke fifteen in regard to the lost sheep. He spoke with power. We returned to L. Jones’. Brother Pennock and wife took dinner with us at Brother Jones’. In the afternoon I spoke, continuing the subject which had been presented in the forenoon. We felt that the church had failed to seek after the lost sheep and that Isaiah sixty-fifth chapter was applicable to their cases. We both spoke with freedom and the Lord aided us in our message. The congregation felt the force of truth and manifested much feeling.

The chapters we were reading in course were in Isaiah. He read with us, and the very portions of Scripture which specified his sin was read by himself. We thought we would give him every chance to make the application to his own case and this might awaken in him a remorse, but it did not seem to have the least influence. He did that night—after we labored with him a long while and then left him with Brother Rousseau and Brother Prescott—confess his sins of vileness, and the conditions were plainly stated, if he would break away at once, and return to New Zealand, we would furnish him money. But he said positively he would not go to New Zealand.

God chooses His workers from all classes of people, and imbues them with His own spirit. So it was in ancient times. The men and women of God’s selection were of intense earnestness, full of zeal. The last books of the Old Testament show us workers taken from the laborers in the field. Others were men of high ability and extensive learning, but the Lord gave them visions and messages. These men of the Old Testament spoke of the things transpiring in their day, and Daniel, Isaiah, and Ezekiel not only spoke of things that concerned them as present truth, but their sight reached down to the future, and to what should occur in these last days.

What would be the result if our brethren should heed and accept the sixtieth and sixty-fifth chapters of Isaiah? Chapters sixty and sixty-one would be understood, and chapter sixty-two to sixty-five would speak to you in a most decided manner. As our brethren take these words, and stop all complaining and every evil work, then the Lord will manifest His power in the conviction and conversion of souls.

As you take these words, and stop your complaining and you evil working, then shall the Lord appear to the conviction and conversion of souls. But whatever your position of influence may be, it is not wholly on the Lord’s side, and you encourage evil. Put away the evil of your works. Come nigh, repent, and be converted. Your ways are not accepted of God. A reformation must go through the congregation of Israel. Come nigh, repent, and be converted. Your ways are not accepted of God.

I do not want the mournful words applied to them, “I have spread out my hands all the day unto a rebellious people, which walked in a way that was not good, after their own thoughts, a people that provoketh me to anger continually to my face.” [Isaiah 65:2, 3.] The God of heaven pleads with you, saying, “Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness. Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.” [Isaiah 55:2, 3.]

And he is full of self-praise. He looks it, he walks it, he prays it. Drawing apart from others as if to say, “Come not near to me; for I am holier than thou” (Isaiah 65:5), he stands and prays “with himself.” Wholly self-satisfied, he thinks that God and men regard him with the same complacency.

By earnest, Christlike efforts, men will be convicted and converted, and God will speak pardon to them. Let no one turn away a soul who leaves the service of Satan and asks Jesus for pardon. “Of some have compassion, making a difference.” [Verse 22.] When they give evidence that the Spirit of God is striving with them, present to them every encouragement for entering the Lord’s service. Do not discourage them by indifference, by drawing away from them with an air of, “I am holier than thou.” [Isaiah 65:5.] Those who act as Pharisees may not be guilty of exactly the same sins they condemn in others, but they may be guilty of sins much greater in the sight of God. Each will be rewarded according to his work. Let those who condemn others take heed to themselves, lest they be condemned by God for Phariseeism.

The Christian is to stand on vantage ground, as a laborer together with God. But he is never to exalt himself. He is firmly to refuse the inducements presented by those who have no love for truth and righteousness, but his refusal is to be made in a Christlike spirit, not Pharisaically, with an attitude which says, “Stand aside; I am holier than thou.” [Isaiah 65:5.] He must show that he cannot enter into sin because he is pledged by a most holy profession to honor the Lord Jesus Christ. By precept and example he is to discountenance all departure from Bible principles. But at the same time, by the manifestation of Christlike love, he is to make the religion of Christ attractive. He is to allow no bigotry to be seen in his life, but is to reveal tender compassion for those who have wandered away from Christ. Brother Faulkhead, while you are connected with the Echo office, let your every word and act show that you are governed by the principles laid down in the Word of God. We are nearing the judgment, and we cannot afford to neglect one of the opportunities offered us to improve the capabilities and talents that God has given us.

If you have been doing the will of God, then His light and His approval will second your efforts, and prosperity will attend you. I wish the members of this once prosperous church would each begin to build over against his own house. When they see their course in its true light, they will know that they have made a very great mistake in allowing their own critical, Pharisaical spirit to control their tongues and develop itself in their treatment of their brethren. This unchristian harshness has excluded Jesus from the Church, and has brought in a spirit of dissension. It has fostered a disposition to judge and condemn, a hatred of those who do not see things as you see them. Even if your brethren say and do many things that really injure you, will you push them aside, and say, “I am holier than thou”? [Isaiah 65:5.]

My dear Brother and Sister whom I highly esteem in the Lord, let us come upon the high platform of the Bible. Let us seek by precept and example to induce others to stand firmly on Bible principles. What blessed union would be the result! I fear our labors are too few and far between for those who do commit errors. I fear we say by deportment and works, “Come not near me, I am holier than thou” [Isaiah 65:5], and we fail to reach out the hand, strong and firm, to grasp the hands that are weak. Oh, that the Lord will breathe upon us His Holy Spirit! We have a work to do—not to help the perfect, [for] they do not need us—but to help those who have errors.

We want to work for souls as they must who work for Christ. Begin to sanctify your hearts and your minds. Build an altar and then let your work extend to your neighbor. There are neighbors within the shadow of your doors that you should labor for, and if you try by kindness to win them to Christ, and not sit up in your Pharisaism and say “I am more holy than thou” [Isaiah 65:5], you will accomplish more than your fondest expectations could hope for. How has it been with you in the past? Have you been doing your duty, or have you been neglecting your duty? If this has been the way, may God help you to break away at this meeting, and may you fall on the Rock Christ Jesus and be broken, lest it fall on you and you be ground to powder.

The baptism of the Holy Spirit will dispel human imaginings, will break down self-erected barriers, and will cause to cease the feeling that “I am holier than thou.” [Isaiah 65:5.] There will be a humble spirit with all, more faith and love; self will not be exalted. Look and live. Christ’s spirit, Christ’s example, will be exemplified in His people. We shall follow more closely the ways and works of Jesus. The pulpit, the press, and the church will be more humble, more forbearing, more patient and kind, and the love of Jesus will pervade our hearts. It is impossible for me to picture before you the result of this influence.

We are to beware of indulging a spirit of bigotry and intolerance. We are not to stand aside from others in a spirit that seems to say, “Come not near; I am holier than thou.” [Isaiah 65:5.] Do not shut yourselves away from your fellow men, but seek to impart to them the precious truth that has blessed your own heart. Let it be manifest that yours is the religion of love. “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” [Matthew 5:16.]

God would open the eyes of His professed people in order that they may see that they must love God supremely, and their neighbors as themselves, if they would be saved in His kingdom. Many are making manifest that they are not controlled by the Spirit of Christ, but by another spirit. The attributes they display are as unlike the attributes of Christ as are the characteristics of Satan. It is high time that believers should stand shoulder to shoulder, and strive together for eternal life, in place of holding themselves aloof, and expressing by word and action, “I am holier than thou.” [Isaiah 65:5.] Those who would exert all their powers for the salvation of perishing souls must come heart to heart, and be bound together in cords of sympathy and love. The hearts of brethren should manifest the same spirit as that manifested by our merciful and faithful High Priest who is touched with the feelings of our infirmities. We may inspire fainting, hopeless ones with new life. We may achieve victories which our own erroneous and misconceived opinion, our own defects of character, our own smallness of faith, have made seem impossible. Faith! We scarcely know what the article is.

To every one who is walking in the light, one who is not walking in the light will be an object of solicitude and most earnest prayer. But the Lord does not sanction any one in presenting the attitude of a moral iceberg. It is not the spirit of Christ that leads men to wrap about themselves the garments of self-righteousness, and to say in spirit, “I am holier than thou.” [Isaiah 65:5.] Those who are free to denounce, to find fault, to judge and condemn others, are not working upon Christlike principles. They should rather have travail of soul for those who need their help, to go forth and seek the wandering lost sheep.

The word of Christ supplied ample provision for the feast. So abundant is His grace to blot out iniquity and to renew and sustain the soul. The wine Christ provided for the feast, and which He gave the disciples as a symbol of His own blood, was the pure juice of the grape. Fellow pilgrim, we are still amid the shadows and turmoil of earthly activities; but soon our Saviour is to appear to bring deliverance and rest. Let us by faith behold the blessed hereafter, as pictured by the hand of God. He who died for the sins of the world, is opening wide the gates of Paradise to all who believe on Him. Soon the battle will have been fought, the victory won. Soon we shall see Him in whom our hopes of eternal life are centered. And in His presence the trials and sufferings of this life will seem as nothingness. The former things “shall not be remembered, nor come into mind” (Isaiah 65:17). “Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompense of reward. For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. I also agree with you, that the new heavens, and the new earth, (Revelation 21:1. Isaiah 65:17. 2 Peter 3:13.) will not appear, till after the wicked dead are raised, and destroyed, at the end of the 1000 years. I saw that Satan was “loosed out of his prison,” at the end of the 1000 years, just at the time the wicked dead were raised; and that Satan deceived them by making them believe that they could take the holy city from the saints. The wicked all marched up around the “camp of the saints,” with Satan at their head; and when they were ready to make an effort to take the city, the Almighty breathed from his high throne, on the city, a breath of devouring fire, which came down on them, and burnt them up, “root and branch.”

The Ellen G. White Letters and Manuscripts: Volume 1

Lt 2, 1847

I also agree with you, that the new heavens, and the new earth, (Rev. 21:1. Isa. 65:17. 2 Pet. 3:13.) will not appear, till after the wicked dead are raised, and destroyed, at the end of the 1000 years.4

According to mainstream Millerite thinking, events at the beginning of the millennium included the second coming of Christ, the resurrection of the righteous dead, the destruction of the wicked, and the purification of the earth by fire, resulting in “a new heaven and a new earth” (Rev. 21:1). Events at the close of the millennium included the resurrection of the wicked dead, the loosing of Satan, the attempted attack on the Holy City, and the final punitive fires. Gradually, over a period of about five years, Sabbatarian Adventists developed a view of the millennium that differed from the above schema on several key points. The earliest break with the Millerite view is found in Ellen Harmon’s first vision of December 1844, in which the saints ascend with Christ to heaven at the Second Coming (see Lt 1, 1845 [Dec. 20], note 16). The next major break appears in this 1847 letter with the assertion that the new heavens and new earth would not emerge at the beginning of the millennium as the Millerites had taught, but at the end, thus anticipating the subsequent teaching that the final fires that destroy Satan and the wicked will also purify the earth, making it “new.” James White claimed, some years later, that his wife’s “view of this subject [the millennium] was not till 1850,” his main point being to prove that on this subject, as well as on other unique Sabbatarian teachings, “it should be understood that all these views … were brought out from the Scriptures before Mrs. W. had any view in regard to them.” However, as can be seen from the visions of 1844 and 1847, Ellen White received instruction on important aspects of the emerging new concept of the millennium well before 1850.

A Word to the Little Flock

To the Remnant Scattered Abroad

WLF 16.1

At first I thought I saw two trees. I looked again and saw they were united at the top in one tree. So it was the tree of life, on either side of the river of life; its branches bowed to the place where we stood; and the fruit was glorious, which looked like gold mixed with silver. We all went under the tree, and sat down to look at the glory of the place, when brothers Fitch and Stockman, who had preached the gospel of the kingdom, and whom God had laid in the grave to save them, came up to us and asked us what we had passed through while they were sleeping. We tried to call up our greatest trials, but they looked so small compared with the far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory [2 Corinthians 4:17.] that surrounded us, that we could not speak them out, [Isaiah 65:17.] and we all cried out Hallelujah, heaven is cheap enough, and we touched our glorious harps and made heaven’s arches ring. And as we were gazing at the glories of the place our eyes were attracted upwards to something that had the appearance of silver. I asked Jesus to let me see what was within there. In a moment we were winging our way upward, and entering in; here we saw good old father Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Noah, Daniel, and many like them. And I saw a vail with a heavy fringe of silver and gold, as a border on the bottom; it was very beautiful. I asked Jesus what was within the vail. He raised it with his own right arm, and bade me take heed. I saw there a glorious ark, overlaid with pure gold, and it had a glorious border, resembling Jesus’ crowns; and on it were two bright angels—their wings were spread over the ark as they sat on each end, with their faces turned towards each other and looking downward. [Exodus 25:18, 20. Hebrews 9:3-5.] In the ark, beneath where the angels’ wings were spread, was a golden pot of Manna, of a yellowish cast; and I saw a rod, which Jesus said was Aaron’s; I saw it bud, blossom and bear fruit. [Numbers 17:8.] And I saw two long golden rods, on which hung silver wires, and on the wires most glorious grapes; one cluster was more than a man here could carry. And I saw Jesus step up and take of the manna, almonds, grapes and pomegranates, and bear them down to the city, and place them on the supper table. I stepped up to see how much was taken away, and there was just as much left; and we shouted Hallelujah—Amen. We all descended from this place down into the city, and with Jesus at our head we all descended from the city down to this earth, on a great and mighty mountain, which could not bear Jesus up, and it parted asunder, and there was a mighty plain. [Zechariah 14:4.] Then we looked up and saw the great city, with twelve foundations, twelve gates, three on each side, and an angel at each gate, and all cried out, “the city, the great city, it’s coming, it’s coming down from God, out of heaven;” [Revelation 21:10-13.] and it came and settled on the place where we stood. Then we began to look at the glorious things outside of the city. There I saw most glorious houses, that had the appearance of silver, supported by four pillars, set with pearls, most glorious to behold, which were to be inhabited by the saints; [Isaiah 65:21.] in them was a golden shelf; I saw many of the saints go into the houses, take off their glittering crowns and lay them on the shelf, then go out into the field by the houses to do something with the earth; [Isaiah 65:21.] not as we have to do with the earth here; no, no. A glorious light shone all about their heads, and they were continually shouting and offering praises to God.

Fellow pilgrim, we are still amid the shadows and turmoil of earthly activities; but soon our Saviour is to appear to bring deliverance and rest. Let us by faith behold the blessed hereafter as pictured by the hand of God. He who died for the sins of the world is opening wide the gates of Paradise to all who believe on Him. Soon the battle will have been fought, the victory won. Soon we shall see Him in whom our hopes of eternal life are centered. And in His presence the trials and sufferings of this life will seem as nothingness. When as God’s peculiar people we take heed to His words, then will every one of us be able to say, “Our soul waiteth for the Lord: He is our help and our shield. For our heart shall rejoice in Him, because we have trusted in His holy name” (Psalm 33:20, 21). “I will bless the Lord at all times: His praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul shall make her boast in the Lord: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together. I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. Joy, March 4

YRP 72.4

In His Word the Lord has made it plain that His people are a joyful people. True faith reaches up the hand and lays hold upon the One who is behind the promise “Great shall be the peace of thy children” (Isaiah 54:13). “Thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river” (Isaiah 66:12). “Behold I create Jerusalem a rejoicing, and her people a joy” (Isaiah 65:18). In God we may “rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory” (1 Peter 1:8). “Men shall be blessed in him: all nations shall call him blessed” (Psalm 72:17). Let us strive to educate the believers to rejoice in the Lord. Spiritual joy is the result of active faith. God’s people are to be full of faith and of the Holy Spirit. Then He will be glorified in them.—Bible Training School, April 1, 1905.

Let us honor God by showing firm faith and unswerving trust. Let us remember that He is not glorified by the manifestation of a fretful, unhappy spirit. The Lord cares for the flowers. He gives them beauty and fragrance. Will He not much more give us the fragrance of a cheerful disposition? Will He not restore in us the divine image? Then let us have faith in Him. Let us now, just now, place ourselves where He can give us His Holy Spirit. Then we can give to the world a revelation of what true religion does for men and women. The joy of the Saviour, filling our hearts, gives us that peace and confidence which enables us to say, “I know that my Redeemer liveth.” [Job 19:25.] In His Word the Lord has made it plain that His people are a joyful people. The Word of the Lord to you is: “I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in my people, saith the Lord.” [Isaiah 65:19.] Can we not here see the paternal love of God expressed to those who hold the faith in righteousness? I have been shown that Dr. Kress is being too closely confined to the sanitarium work at Washington, D.C. He should be given opportunity to let his influence be more widely felt. Dr. Kress came from Australia to take up an important work in Washington. This is a place where our workers can meet with influential men. We are not now to be an obscure church, but we are to let the light shine forth that the world may receive it. “I will rejoice in Jerusalem and joy in my people,” God declares through His servant Isaiah. [Isaiah 65:19.] These words will be proven true when those who are capable of standing in positions of responsibility let the light shine forth. Our leading physicians have a work to do outside the compass of our own people. Their influence is not to be limited. Christ’s methods of labor are to become their methods, and they are to learn to practice the teachings of His Word. Isaiah 65:24

The Review and Herald

RH May 27, 1884, par. 1

Text: “Before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.” Isaiah 65:24.

Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

Lt 105, 1894

It is half past four o’clock and two men have just come in from Sydney, saying they have had no dinner. We satisfy their necessities, and they go on their long journey to Dora Creek, stopping over night at Kellyville among our brethren there, and starting early tomorrow morning for the school grounds. It is seventy-five miles from here to Dora Creek. We have provided for their journey. Another one now comes in hungry for something to eat. Thank the Lord we have something for him. So it goes on, and we receive and give, scatter and increase, for withholding tends to poverty. O, I am so thankful that the Lord is never weary of supplying our necessities. He says, “Before they call, I will answer.” [Isaiah 65:24.] Did you not find it thus? When you turned to Jesus, did He not turn to you? O, how precious is the love of Christ. Will you or Emma or I ever lose a sense of His goodness, of His patience and long forbearing? I feel grateful to God every day that my son who was lost is found. Shall we ever forget this mercy? I hope we never shall.

Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

Lt 76, 1898

13LtMs, Lt 76, 1898, par. 27

You can see that the greatest interest upon this earth are the people of the Lord, His church. Your only dependence is in the Lord. That which others have done or may do you have not to answer for. You are only answerable for that which Philip Wessels may do. The word of the Lord in Zephaniah is positive. He delights to hear and answer the prayer that comes from the contrite heart. His word is given to us as His pledge: “And it shall come to pass, that before they call, (before the longing desire of the soul is put into the form of a petition), I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.” [Isaiah 65:24.] The Lord declares by His prophet that he is to publish to the world the readiness of God’s acceptance of His servant’s desire, before the petition is placed in words. The moment he steadfastly purposes to offer the prayer, the yearning of his soul is respected.

“Before they call I will answer, and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.” [Isaiah 65:24.] Take these words by faith. It is God who sends the assurance.
