Spoke to the people in forenoon from 2 Corinthians 4. I spoke to the people with great earnestness and sought to impress them with a sense of their responsibility. There had been much levity and some things which had separated them from God. I read to them Romans 2:6-11. In the afternoon I spoke again from Colossians 3:12-17.

Spoke to the church assembled this morning from Colossians. Our social meeting was good. I have written eight pages to Brother and Sister Ings. We had a nice shower in the night.

What does the Holy Spirit do for the receiver? It gives him the mind of Christ. Study the first chapters of Hebrews and Colossians. It makes him a faithful worker for his Lord. The man who has caught the Spirit of God does not pet his own ideas, and make strong his own natural tendencies. He takes himself in hand, and brings “I” into subjection. He will not go forward in any false way, but represses the evil inclination. He will not excuse his faults, but in faith and much prayer will cut away the evil, whatever may be its character. When the Holy Spirit sees this determined effort, man is not left to struggle alone for the mastery.

13LtMs, Lt 107, 1898, par. 13

Sanctified love never degrades. It elevates, ennobles, purifies, and brings sacred joy to the soul. The consciousness that we are in the sight of a holy God, that His presence is with us always, will keep us from all unholy impulses and lustful passions. The truth as it is in Jesus leads to complete surrender of heart, mind, soul, and strength to the service of God. “Whatsoever ye do,” Christ says, “do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.” [Colossians 3:17.]

In the third chapter of Colossians definite instruction is given to families. The apostle says, “Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them. Children, obey your parents in all things; for this is well pleasing unto the Lord. Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged. Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God. And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not unto men; knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance; for ye serve the Lord Christ. But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done, and there is no respect of persons.” [Verses 18-25.]

We need to be converted, else we shall never understand the meaning of sanctification of soul and spirit. The third chapter of Colossians is a wonderfully soothing recipe for the cure of church troubles. In your families and in the church will you begin at once the treatment here laid out? Will you take the remedy prescribed, and will you take it now?

15LtMs, Ms 72, 1900, par. 7

“Put on therefore as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, long-suffering, forbearing one another and forgiving one another. If any have a quarrel against any, even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things, put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which ye are also called in one body, and be ye thankful.” [Verses 12-15.]

15LtMs, Ms 72, 1900, par. 8

“Let the word of God dwell in you richly with all wisdom.” Then you will be workers together with God. “Teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him: ... knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. But he which doeth evil shall receive the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.” [Verses 16, 17, 24, 25.]

Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

Ms 130, 1902

17LtMs, Ms 130, 1902, par. 16

In the third of Colossians we read: “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with Him in glory.” [Verses 1-4.]

17LtMs, Ms 130, 1902, par. 17

This whole chapter should be carefully studied. What is the charge given us?—“Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: for which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: in the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. But now (after pledging yourself to serve Christ in truth and verity) ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.” [Verses 5-8.]

17LtMs, Ms 130, 1902, par. 18

Notice the next verse: “Lie not one to another.” [Verse 9.] If you have solemnly covenanted with God, in the presence of Christ and the Holy Spirit, to act as a member of the royal family, a child of the heavenly King, you will not in your life lie against the truth you profess to believe. You will not reveal by your works that you are a sinner, while professing to be a saint. If you are sincere in making this pledge, you will not be found nullifying your prayer, “Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven” [Matthew 6:10], by acting as sinners act whenever it best suits your convenience to act thus, <and when you can advantage yourself and at your neighbor’s disadvantage.>

Let the young men and young women who are preparing for service read and study the third chapter of Colossians, and the first chapter of Second Peter, and also the following Scriptures: “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:12-16. “Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in all things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.” Hebrews 2:17, 18.

Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 18 (1903)

Lt 160, 1903

18LtMs, Lt 160, 1903, par. 3

At the time of our baptism, we pledged ourselves in the presence of the three most powerful agencies of heaven—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost—that we would henceforth walk in newness of life. At the same time, all Heaven pledged itself to endow us with the power of the Holy Spirit. The fulfilment of our pledge is represented in the third chapter of Colossians: “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with Him in glory. Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth.” [Verses 1-5.] Read the entire chapter. In striving to win in the Christian conflict, we are not to try to overcome in our own strength, but in the strength of these mighty Powers that have promised to lead and guide us onward to victory.

18LtMs, Lt 160, 1903, par. 18

As I read this, I thought, What a beautiful idea! God has engraved it in my heart. “When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall we also appear with Him in glory.” [Colossians 3:4.] What a miracle of mercy that will be! Is this your hope—not a casual hope, but a hope well grounded and secure?

18LtMs, Lt 160, 1903, par. 29

My brother and sister, your two lives are worth more than a thousand worlds if of you it can in the heavenly courts be said, “They are dead, and their lives are hid with Christ in God.” [Colossians 3:3.] “You hath He quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins.” [Ephesians 2:1.] It is yours to say, “I live, yet not I, but Christ liveth in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave Himself for me.” [Galatians 2:20.] The richest of heaven’s blessings are ours through the gospel of our Redeemer. We may rise to our high privileges. Shall we not make a determined effort to live wholly for God?

With the might of Omnipotence, God works to make the gospel triumphant. Can man bind the arm of Jehovah? Can he shut out the light of heaven? No, no! “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affections on things above, and not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with Him in glory.” [Colossians 3:1-4.]

17LtMs, Lt 200, 1902, par. 22

God calls for perfection of character. Christ wants to blend our lives with His life. Let those who are determined to be Bible Christians strive lawfully for the crown of life. “Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any; even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. I send you these words, because they are presented to me as the message of the Lord to those who are not obeying Him. Please read and study the third chapter of Colossians. It states plainly what we must do in order to leave on the minds of unbelievers an impression favorable to the truth.

We may claim the strength and the victory that they may give us as we stand before the world, not to ape its fashions, not to study the fashion books, but to walk humbly with our God. “Ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. You should have the best of care, and live your time in this world, until the quiet rest, in full hope of the overcomer’s reward. Just rest yourself in your belief of the truth. Do not worry about anything. You have kept the faith; and for you is laid up a crown of life, which Christ, the righteous Judge, shall give you at that day, and not to you only, but to all them who love His appearing. The Lord will keep you and bless you. All your hope, I know, is in Jesus; and you may rest in His love. The angels of God will be round about you. You are born unto God, and you stand under the sanction and the power of the three holiest beings in heaven, who are able to keep you from falling. You are to reveal that you are dead to sin; your life is hid with Christ in God. Hidden “with Christ in God”—wonderful transformation. [Colossians 3:3.] This is a most precious promise. When I feel oppressed and hardly know how to relate myself toward the work that God has given me to do, I just call upon the three great Worthies, and say: You know I cannot do this work in my own strength. All heaven is pledged in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost they receive at their baptism. That heavenly party is pledged that They will be with you to keep your baptismal vows, and that you shall rise up from the water to live in newness of life. “Ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.” [Colossians 3:3.] And then you are to live the new life unto Jesus Christ. He loves you. He has made all these provisions, that the power of Satan should be broken off from human minds, that you should take hold of a power, yes, a power. The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost—all these blend, and in Their strength you can be overcomers by the blood of the Lamb and the words of your testimony. Will you try it? Will you watch, will you pray, will you have your seasons to lay hold of the promises? I want heaven.

The baptismal service was conducted with great calmness and solemnity. The hymns chosen for the occasion were well selected. Elder Simpson’s face was shining, and the countenances of the whole company reflected the light of cheerful obedience. On profession of faith, the willing candidates were baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—the three heavenly authorities who pledge themselves to help in times of necessity those who take part in this ordinance. Henceforth the candidates must show themselves dead to the world and alive unto God. “Ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.” [Colossians 3:3.] They are to seek God for the new life in Christ.

Did you not receive baptism in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost? These great powers were pledged, these three highest powers in heaven were pledged that every one should keep the promise of their baptism. “Ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.” [Colossians 3:3.] Dead to what? To our former disposition of mind. Is there no change in our disposition when we claim to be children of God? We are to be like Christ. We are to follow Christ. We are to be partakers of Christ. Yes, we are to live Christ’s followers.

The richest blessings are for you and all others who preach the Word. But we must ever remember the words, “Ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.” [Colossians 3:3.] The Saviour promises to satisfy the most urgent needs of the soul. He promises: “The water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water, springing up into everlasting life.” [John 4:14.] You need to be converted every day in order to be a vessel unto honor, one who can teach others. Do not make a mistake. Your soul is precious, and Christ will save you, if you will be saved by purifying your soul through obedience to the truth.

The cedar of Lebanon was honored by all the people of the East. The class of trees to which it belongs is found wherever human beings have gone throughout the earth. From the arctic regions to the tropic zone they flourish, rejoicing in the heat, yet braving the cold; springing in rich luxuriance by the riverside, yet towering aloft upon the parched and thirsty waste. They plant their roots deep among the rocks of the mountains and boldly stand in defiance of the tempest. Their leaves are fresh and green when all else has perished at the breath of winter. Above all other trees the cedar of Lebanon is distinguished for its strength, its firmness, its undecaying vigor; and this is used as a symbol of those whose life is “hid with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3). Says the Scripture, “The righteous ... shall grow like a cedar” (Psalm 92:12). The divine hand has exalted the cedar as king over the forest. “The fir trees were not like his boughs, and the chestnut trees were not like his branches” (Ezekiel 31:8); nor any tree in the garden of God. The cedar is repeatedly employed as an emblem of royalty, and its use in Scripture to represent the righteous shows how heaven regards those who do the will of God.

The prophet likens Israel to fertile valleys covered with abundant harvests; to flourishing gardens watered by never-failing springs; to the fragrant sandal tree and the stately cedar. God has promised to co-operate with those who choose to labor in harmony with His purposes. We are to do our utmost to fulfil our part faithfully, in order that He may demonstrate to the world what He can do through us. At our baptism, we pledged ourselves that, being dead to the world, we would henceforth remember that our life is “hid with Christ in God” [Colossians 3:3], and that we had taken our position on the exalted platform of truth, there to work in unison with the Hand that never fails.

18LtMs, Ms 67, 1903, par. 14

It is the privilege of every Christian constantly to live up to his baptismal covenant. “Ye are dead,” says the apostle Paul of those who have been baptized, “and your life is hid with Christ in God.” [Colossians 3:3.] To enable us to keep this covenant, there is placed at our command every facility, every power of heaven.

18LtMs, Ms 67, 1903, par. 15

And what a reward is set before those who are faithful! The promise is, “When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with Him in glory.” [Verse 4.] In comparison with this reward, of how much value is all the honor and the glory that this world can offer? The end of all things earthly is death, eternal death. Can we afford to choose to “enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season”? [Hebrews 11:25.] Shall we not resolutely turn from every worldly influence and by faith behold the One altogether lovely, the Chiefest among ten thousand—He who died in order that we might live in the earth made new?

The foolish self-esteem and self-confidence which many possess will prove their eternal ruin. To them the narrow path cast up for the ransomed of the Lord to walk in seems altogether too restricted. But he who abides in Christ will understand what it means to be crucified to the world. The Lord has provided only one refuge for His people. The great apostle says, “Your life is hid with Christ in God.” “When Christ who is your life shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.” [Colossians 3:3, 4.] All who are overcomers will be highly exalted.

Ten thousand times ten thousand angels, and thousands of thousands. When they come in the clouds of heaven, the first language which comes from the sanctified soul that is one with Christ in God is a voice of thanksgiving and praise. “We have waited for Thee; we have long waited for Thee to come in the clouds of heaven; and to meet Thee with joy, and not with grief. And when He who is our life shall appear, then shall we also appear with Him in glory.” [Colossians 3:3, 4.] But this is not the death spoken of in the text that I have read. Reformatory action is the humiliation of self. “Ye are dead and your life is hid with Christ in God and when He who is your life shall appear then shall ye also appear with Him in glory.” [Colossians 3:3, 4.] Is not this again worth obtaining? Having determined what reform means, every soul, for their own present and future eternal interest, should labor to promote these reforms—not [acting] according to the unsanctified, selfish measurement of man guided and controlled [by] science of satanic origin. Will God’s people open their eyes and with fearfulness and courage stand up for Jesus? This will provoke opposition, calumny, and bitterest hatred. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom: teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. The Scriptures declare, “By thy words thou shalt be justified and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.” [Matthew 12:37.] And not only our words and actions, but our thoughts, make up the picture of what we are. Then let every soul be good and do good. Let the picture made of you be one of which you will not be ashamed. Every feeling we cherish makes its impress upon the countenance. God help us to make our record in our families what we would wish it to be in the heavenly record. Remember that God is taking your picture. It is utterly impossible for man to sanctify and purify and bless himself. God alone is our helper. Grace will be imparted to every soul who sincerely desires it. We must put away from us our selfishness and become righteous—not by merit, but by grace. “Now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be,” but when He who is our life, shall appear, then shall we appear with Him in glory. It is utterly impossible for man to sanctify, purify, and bless himself. God alone is our helper. His grace, through the everlasting covenant symbolized by the rainbow about His throne, will be imparted to every soul who sincerely desires it. We must put away our selfishness and become righteous, not by dead works but through the merits of the grace of Christ. The apostle exclaims, “Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be, but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.” [1 John 3:2, 3.] “When he who is your life shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.” [Colossians 3:4.]

If every one of you could realize the effect of your sharp words, if you could see the discouragement that comes upon the soul, if you could see Jesus wounded and bruised because of your harsh criticisms and denunciations, you would manifest great carefulness in dealing with those about you. You would treat them as you desire to be treated yourself. You would not dare to exhibit your objectionable traits of character. Your heart would be melted to obey the words of the apostle Paul: “Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any; even as Christ also forgave you, so also do ye. My son, you will find that you cannot please all men. You will offend some even when you do your best. But be very careful and guarded not to give occasion for your good to be evil spoken of. You cannot know how anxious I am to have you stand on vantage ground; for there are those who for years have covered their own neglect to take up work in the South by finding fault with the active laborers in that field. Instead of showing their tact, and ability by doing their best to start the work in new places, they have stood to one side, criticizing what Edson White and his co-workers have been doing. Those who have not “put off the old man with his deeds” [Colossians 3:9] are standing as accusers of the brethren. Before angels and men, Satan is zealously accusing the laborers who take up the work of God in new places. The men who do not take upon themselves the burden of God’s work will be kept very busy by the enemy in accusing and picking flaws with those who are determined to advance the work in missionary fields.

Christians are to be light bearers in the world, shining amid the darkness of sin and crime. In the kingdom of this world, the principalities and powers that take Satan as their leader must constantly be met. Following Christ’s example of cross bearing and self-denial makes those who receive Christ children of God. “As many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name” (John 1:12). They are victors in the battle of life; for they have put on the new man, “which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him” (Colossians 3:10).—Manuscript 30, March 2, 1902, “Christlikeness in Business Dealings.”

I call upon those who stand as presidents and overseers in our institutions to change. Altogether too much of the natural tendency of the human heart is revealed, which has nothing to do with Christ, but everything to do with self. Hear the words of the Lord to you: “Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, long-suffering; forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do you.” [Colossians 3:12, 13.]

I testify to you that this has not been done as God requires. My fellow laborers in a high and holy calling, you have a work to do. Clear the King’s highway, make His paths straight, that holy angels may come into our institutions. Remember that whatever your position, you are only men and not God. The Lord says to you, “Above all things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.” [Verse 14.] What is charity? It is love for God and for your fellow laborers. “All ye are brethren,” Christ declares. [Matthew 23:8.] He includes every soul from the highest to the least.

14LtMs, Lt 101, 1899, par. 3

Kindness and courtesy, gentleness and grace, must be revealed in the men who bear high responsibilities. Then there will be unity, and love will be exercised toward all, for they will have “put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him.” “There is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, bond or free; but Christ is all and in all.” [Colossians 3:10, 11.]

The apostle exhorts us, “Let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.” [Verse 15.] When you empty the soul-temple of self, there will be room for the peace of God to rule. With some, self has occupied the throne of your hearts ever since you professed to be converted. This self is a selfish, bigoted creature who needs to die daily. “Let the word of God dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” [Verse 16.] If there were less scolding, and more singing with grace in the heart to the Lord, think you not that the atmosphere of every room in the office would be changed? The workers would be easily entreated to show mercy and tenderness for every soul in need of help and strength and grace.

14LtMs, Lt 101, 1899, par. 6

“And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.” [Verse 17.] I am charged to say to you, Will you do whole-souled, thorough work, and let Christ abide in you? To be converted one day under the Holy Spirit’s working is not enough. Let the Spirit of God cleanse the soul-temple. Let Jesus in. He invites you to receive Him. Covetousness and the other evils that dominate in your lives are not such precious traits that you should be unwilling to part with them. I tell you that you have not attained to the height of your possibilities. You have only reached a low level, for self is cherished as if it were pure, untarnished gold. However high in the scale of piety you have risen, there are heights you have never yet reached—heights which if you do not reach, you will be “found wanting.” [Daniel 5:27.]

The success attending the preaching of the gospel aroused the anger of the Jews anew. From every quarter were coming accounts of the spread of the new doctrine by which Jews were released from the observance of the rites of the ceremonial law and Gentiles were admitted to equal privileges with the Jews as children of Abraham. Paul, in his preaching at Corinth, presented the same arguments which he urged so forcibly in his epistles. His emphatic statement, “There is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision” (Colossians 3:11), was regarded by his enemies as daring blasphemy, and they determined that his voice should be silenced.

There are many souls who wrestle for special victories and special blessings, that they may do some great thing. To this end they are always feeling that they must make an agonizing struggle in prayers and tears. When these persons search the Scriptures with prayer to know the expressed will of God, and then do His will from the heart without one reservation of selfish indulgence, they will find rest. All the agonizing, all the tears and struggles will not give them the blessing they long for. Self must be entirely surrendered. They must do the work that presents itself, appropriating the abundance of the grace of God which is promised to all who ask in faith. “Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; forbearing one another, and forgiving one another: if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, even so also do ye.” [Colossians 3:12, 13.]

And above all things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.” [Colossians 3:12-14.]

These words were spoken to you by the Lord: “Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering, forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any; even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.” [Colossians 3:12, 13.] Now just as Christ treats us, mercifully, tenderly, forgiving our transgressions and mistakes, “so also do ye.” “And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.” [Verse 14.] My brother, could you have heard these words as they were spoken to you in the most impressive manner, they could not but have converted your soul. “Let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body, and be ye thankful.” [Verse 15.] Your health will improve when your heart is under the subduing influence of the Spirit of God and you let the peace of God rule, not be a transient guest, in your soul.

These mark objectionable features in others, and call the attention of others to the faults of the brethren. They impart to others the same spirit of evil surmising, and awaken suspicion and jealousy in others’ minds. They distribute the leaven of evil speaking, which creates heart burnings, distrust, and evil surmising; and roots of bitterness spring up whereby many are defiled. “Put on therefore as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; forbearing one another, and forgiving one another if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. When husbands require the complete subjection of their wives, declaring that women have no voice or will in the family, but must render entire submission, they place their wives in a position contrary to the Scripture. In interpreting the Scripture in this way, they do violence to the design of the marriage institution. This interpretation is made simply that they may exercise arbitrary rule, which is not their prerogative. But we read on, “Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.” Why should the husband be bitter against his wife? Paul seeks to impress upon our minds the fact that the foundation of all acceptable service to God, as well as the very crown of the Christian graces, is love; and that only in the soul where love reigns will the peace of God abide. “Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. How many of my hearers love to dwell upon and to tell of their trials! And how little we offer praise to God! We do not take into consideration all the blessings He bestows upon us from day to day. If we should take this view of the matter and recount our blessings, many of our supposed trials would disappear. We have every reason to be thankful, to praise God. We should not complain, but we should show our gratitude. “Rejoice in the Lord.” [Philippians 4:4.]

If those now engaged in the work are not Christians in the Bible light, they will be no blessing to the office, but a curse. There is some deep feeling here now. A true woman in the home is a treasure, and she should be respected and appreciated. The question is often asked, Shall a wife have no will of her own? The Bible plainly states that the husband is the head of the family. “Wives submit yourselves unto your own husbands.” If this injunction ended here, we might say that the position of the wife is not an enviable one; it is a very hard and trying position in very many cases, and it would be better were there fewer marriages. Many husbands stop at the words, “Wives, submit yourselves,” but we will read the conclusion of the same injunction, which is, “As it is fit in the Lord.” [Colossians 3:18.]

But we read on, “Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.” [Verse 19.] Why should the husband be bitter against his wife? If the husband has found her erring and full of faults, bitterness of spirit will not remedy the evil.

For ye have need of patience, that after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.” [Hebrews 10:35, 36.] Will those who have been tossed about by temptation and doubt remember these words? “Put on therefore as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; forbearing one another and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any, even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. ... Whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. ... We know the source from which it flows, and we know how it is to be retained. By praise and thanksgiving we may maintain our connection with God. Cultivate thankfulness of heart. “Let the peace of God rule in your hearts, ... and be ye thankful.” [Colossians 3:15.] Work interestedly, lovingly, patiently, for all with whom you are brought in contact. Show no impatience. Utter not one unkind word. Let the love of Christ be in your heart, the law of kindness upon your lips. This will enable you to achieve almost every good and noble thing.

The appearance with many who profess to believe the truth is as though they had a severe task laid upon them, and were sour under its influence. “Let the peace of God rule in your hearts, ... and be ye thankful.” [Colossians 3:15.] “But without faith it is impossible to please God.” [Hebrews 11:6.] Whatever you may have to pass through because of the little love and sympathy and appreciation of your work, bear in mind the Lord Jesus knows all about it. Look heavenward for your words of comfort and hope, and you will never, never be disappointed. “Lift up your heads and rejoice, for your redemption draweth nigh.” [Luke 21:28.] Now, just now as never before, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering, for He is faithful that promised.

The apostle says, “Let the peace of God rule in your hearts.” [Colossians 3:15.] When Christ was a child like these children here, He was tempted to sin, but He did not yield to temptation. As He grew older He was tempted, but the songs His mother had taught Him to sing came into His mind, and He would lift His voice in praise. And before His companions were aware of it, they would be singing with Him. God wants us to use every facility which heaven has provided for resisting the enemy.

So great is the intemperance in speech that much instruction has been given on this subject by the greatest Teacher the world has ever seen. He has given special directions for the discipline of the tongue. Study and obey these directions. Check the unwholesome words that if spoken would create differences and alienation. Speak words that will cement hearts, not estrange them; words that will heal, not wound. When difficulties arise among church members, let them be cleared away before the Sabbath comes. This should be regarded as a Christian duty by every church member. “Let the peace of God rule in your hearts, ... and be ye thankful.” [Colossians 3:15.] Are you troubled and perplexed? Sweep away the rubbish that has been accumulating before the door of the heart, and open the door, inviting Jesus to come in and abide as an honored guest. Bring peace and comfort into your own hearts and the hearts of others. This is most blessed missionary work.

This will encourage Uriah. Get the expression of a smile upon your countenance, and let it sit there naturally with ease, as if at home. Smiles are too great strangers to your countenance. Put away your doleful expression, as though some terrible evil was impending over you. Believe that Jesus loves you, that He gave His life for you, that you might have happiness and joy forevermore. That same Jesus, who withheld not His own life to save you, will not leave you to yourself but will take you in His care and will not forsake you. Oh, Harriet, you have been too faithless and unbelieving. Stay up the hands of Uriah by cheerful countenance [and] encouraging words.

Our camp meeting in Minnesota has closed. We left without entering a house. This meeting has been better than the three preceding it, and they were all good. The first two days of the meeting were rainy and uncomfortable, but all possessed their souls in patience. Not one word of complaint or murmuring was heard. All we met had a word of good cheer. This is as it should be. We can make that which is disagreeable ten times more so by talking of the discomforts and feeling that we are having a hard time. I think it pays to heed the injunction of the Apostle, “Let the peace of God rule in your hearts ... and be ye thankful.” Colossians 3:15.

The human heart must continually cry for the living God, to know His will, and to make the life conform to it. Yield not to every influence with which you are brought in contact. Determine, as Daniel did, that you will not gratify self at the expense of principle. Seek for a character so consistent, so meek, so resolute, so cheerful, so devout, that sin will find in you no sanction, and as you walk in the light of the Sun of Righteousness, you will walk in a wise and perfect way. Christian elevation will pervade your demeanor. You will know in your own experience the meaning of the injunction of Paul, “Let the peace of God rule in your hearts.” [Colossians 3:15.] Let its power strengthen you in firmness, courage, and trust, that the world may see in you a faith with which they cannot tamper. “If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature.” [2 Corinthians 5:17.]

If we give it room, if we encourage its presence, we will have a peace and joy that is beyond all understanding. Then there will not flow from our lips a flood of words that have no softening, subduing influence upon the characters of those with whom we associate. A heart in which the peace of God rules will not pour forth words that cause the angels of God to cover their faces for sorrow. One of the most unprofitable exercises in prayer is to get the head in the hands and then whisper out a prayer so that but few can hear the words spoken. Do not do this anywhere except in private, alone with God. When you pray at the family altar, come with holy boldness to the throne of grace, where we have been invited to come and make known our requests unto God. “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” Colossians 3:16. Praying is to be short, right to the point, as a religious exercise. There is too much rambling in prayer in public. Singing is to be with the spirit and understanding, also making melody to God.

If you had let the words of Christ dwell in you richly, if you had searched the Bible for truth as men seek for hidden treasure, you would have had a precious experience, and as you contemplated the living oracles, daily you would have discovered new beauty in the inspired utterances, and your thoughts and words would have been purified, even as precious metal is purified and refined from dross in the fire of the furnace.

The requirement of the gospel is far-reaching. Says the apostle, “Whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him” (Colossians 3:17). “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31). Practical piety will not be attained by giving the grand truths of the Bible a place in the outer courts of the heart. The religion of the Bible must be brought into the large and the little affairs of life. It must furnish the powerful motives and principles that will regulate the Christian’s character and course of action....
