In the first chapter of Second Peter is presented the progressive work in the Christian life. The whole chapter is a lesson of deep importance. If man, in acquiring the Christian graces, works on the plan of addition, God has pledged Himself to work in his behalf upon the plan of multiplication. “Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord.” 2 Peter 1:2. The work is laid out before every soul that has acknowledged his faith in Jesus Christ by baptism.67SDA Bible Commentary 6:1074.From the Heart

If God gives a man wisdom, his course of action will be in harmony with the will of God, and those connected with him will have confidence in his wisdom to devise and plan for the progress and advancement of the work of God in saving souls that are ready to die. The apostle Peter says: “Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, according as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness” (2 Peter 1:2, 3).—Manuscript 66, May 24, 1898, to the General Conference and our publishing institutions.Testimony Treasures, vol. 2

“The god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.” 2 Corinthians 4:4. But the Bible in strongest terms sets before us the importance of obtaining a knowledge of God. Says Peter: “Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord.” “His divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him that hath called us to glory and virtue.” 2 Peter 1:2, 3. And the Scripture bids us: “Acquaint now thyself with Him, and be at peace.” Job 22:21.2 Peter 1:2-4

Christ said, “If I be lifted up, I will draw all men unto me.” [John 12:32.] The Spirit of Christ is drawing all men, and the gracious invitation goes forth to all. The knowledge of God and Jesus Christ whom He hath sent is life and salvation to all who respond to it. Peter writes, “Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God and of Jesus Christ our Lord according as His divine power has given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who hath called us to glory and virtue, whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises, that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature (as was Jesus Christ when humanity was upon Him) having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” [2 Peter 1:2-4.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 10 (1895)

Those who inquire after the way of life need not be rich, need not be wise, learned or honored; yet God will quicken their perceptions so that they may understand what they must do to be saved. The light of heaven is shining upon the earth from the throne of God, and Christ says, “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all unto me.” [John 12:32.] His gracious invitation is going forth to all mankind, and those who respond to it will find life and salvation. Peter writes, “Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, according as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” [2 Peter 1:2-4.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

The wonderful plan of redemption must be discerned in the death of Christ. There is to be a seeing to the end of that which was to be abolished, that the complete restoration may be understood. Man is not able to save himself, but the Son of God fights his battles for him, and places him on vantage ground by giving him His divine attributes. “Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises, that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” [2 Peter 1:2-4.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

By His obedience in human nature Christ showed that fallen man can keep all the requirements of God. Man of himself cannot obey the law of God, but as we read the words of Peter, we see the position man is privileged to occupy through Jesus Christ. But diligent efforts must be made on the part of the human agent to cooperate with God. “According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” [2 Peter 1:3, 4.] If man lays hold of the divine nature, he works upon the plan of addition, adding grace to grace in perfecting a Christian character. And God will work for the constant, diligent seeker upon the plan of multiplication. “Grace and peace be multiplied unto you,” he says, “through the knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord.” [Verse 2.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

Sanctification is a progressive work. The successive steps are set before us in the words of Peter: “Giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. Every one may add to his talents by improving those which he already has. In looking to, and fashioning the mind after, outward surroundings, we can never increase our ability. The Lord expects us to gain a valuable knowledge, to increase our ability, to improve the talents that we have. We can only do this by working on the plan of addition. And if we do this, we shall find that God is working for us on the broader plan of multiplication. He says, “Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, according as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” [2 Peter 1:2-4.]11LtMs, Ms 70, 1896, par. 37
Read still further in this chapter and see the plan of addition worked out and proved: “And beside all this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” [Verses 5-8.] This is sanctified ambition, to advance, to increase in wisdom, and in favor with God and man, to live the Word of God.Reflecting Christ

In the heavenly courts we are called “laborers together with God.” “Ye are God’s husbandry; ye are God’s building,” the word of Inspiration declares. [1 Corinthians 3:9.] When you wed heart and hand to Jesus, you become an heir of God and a joint-heir with Christ. God loves you with the same love that He loves His only begotten Son. You are given a life insurance policy. “Grace and peace be multiplied unto you,” the apostle Peter writes. [2 Peter 1:2.] On what condition? you ask. On the condition that you work on the plan of addition. Set your God-given talents of intellect at work.14LtMs, Lt 66, 1899, par. 9
Turn away from frivolous things and receive the knowledge of God and of Jesus Christ our Lord. Are you learning of Christ? Are you putting to the stretch every spiritual sinew and muscle to obtain an increased knowledge of God through obedience to His commandments? Let us read on. “According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who hath called us to glory and virtue, whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises, that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” [Verses 3, 4.]14LtMs, Lt 66, 1899, par. 11
What is your experience, Henry? You are not to stop at any low standard. You cannot serve God and the world at the same time. There is a ladder for you to climb, round after round. The base of this ladder rests firmly upon the earth, and the topmost round reaches to the highest heaven. Christ Himself took humanity. He hid His divinity under the robe of humanity, that you might follow in His steps. The apostle continues, “And besides this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, (character), and to virtue, knowledge; and to knowledge, temperance; and to temperance, patience; and to patience, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness, charity. For if these things be in you and abound, they make you that ye shall be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” [2 Peter 1:5-8.]14LtMs, Lt 66, 1899, par. 12
Henry, will you work on this plan of addition? Will you work on the giving side? While you add to the value of your character, the Lord works upon the plan of multiplication, for we read, “Grace and peace be multiplied unto you, through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, ... But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off.” [Verses 2, 9.] He lacks discernment. He needs the gold of a virtuous character—faith in Christ, the love expressed in the new commandment. The man who has forgotten that he was purged from his old sins cannot see the advantage of keeping self under control. He is uncleansed, as he was before, full of passion, full of wrath, full of bitterness.14LtMs, Lt 66, 1899, par. 14
“Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure, for if ye do these things ye shall never fall.” [Verse 10.] Henry, my brother, this language should be sufficient for you. This is your life-insurance paper, not made out according to the manner of the world, but according to the abundant provision of God. It assures you that if you work in God’s lines, you shall never fall. For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ. Can you, my brother, take hold of this hope set before you in the gospel? Jesus Christ is made unto us wisdom. How much you need this in verity and in truth, that you may determine to labor steadfastly to reach a higher standard.14LtMs, Lt 66, 1899, par. 16
Are you doing what you can to co-operate with God in the saving of your own soul, which will never be saved unless you co-operate with God with all your mind and soul and strength? All that there is of you God requires you to put into the conflict; and improvement will come, in wisdom, in grace, in intensity of desire to conform your will to the will of God, and heed the exhortation, “Give diligence to make your calling and election sure.” [Verse 10.] You can make your life a lamentable failure by rejecting the light, or you can make it a glorious success by complying with God’s conditions. Your calling and election has been provided. Every means has been placed at your command; therefore be diligent, be earnest, be determined to make a record altogether different from the record you have made.2 Peter 1:2-11

Point them to the ladder, Peter’s ladder of eight rounds, and place their feet, not on the highest round, but on the lowest, and with earnest solicitation urge them to climb to the very top; step by step they may climb to the top of this ladder. In this Scripture is represented man’s cooperation with God in the plan of salvation. The apostle Paul presents it thus: “Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God that worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” [Philippians 2:12, 13.] God works in and through the human agents. They become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. They are to work upon the plan of addition as set forth by Peter. Not that one grace is to be added after another, but all are to be manifest in the Christian character. “For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall be neither barren nor unfruitful.” “Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things (adding constantly to the graces here mentioned), ye shall never fall. Mark especially verses 8-11. In order to have this positive assurance, you must begin to work, as the Holy Spirit works you, on altogether different lines, from inward to outward. You need not feel that you must mingle the common with the sacred. You have done this so continually in the past that your spiritual eyesight is obscured, and you cannot discern between the sacred and the common. You take the common fire, and exalt and praise and cherish it, and the Lord turns from you with displeasure. Had you not better make a full consecration of yourself to God? Will you imperil your souls by a divided service?Testimonies for the Church, vol. 6

Christ, who connects earth with heaven, is the ladder. The base is planted firmly on the earth in His humanity; the topmost round reaches to the throne of God in His divinity. The humanity of Christ embraces fallen humanity, while His divinity lays hold upon the throne of God. We are saved by climbing round after round of the ladder, looking to Christ, clinging to Christ, mounting step by step to the height of Christ, so that He is made unto us wisdom and righteousness and sanctification and redemption. Faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness, and charity are the rounds of this ladder. All these graces are to be manifested in the Christian character; and “if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: for so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 1:10, 11.6T 148.2
It is not men whom we are to exalt, but God, the only true and living God. The unselfish life, the generous, self-sacrificing spirit, the sympathy and love of those who hold positions of trust in our institutions, should have a purifying, ennobling influence which would be eloquent for good. Their words in counsel would not then come from a self-sufficient, self-exalted spirit; but their unobtrusive virtues would be of more value than gold. If man lays hold of the divine nature, working upon the plan of addition, adding grace to grace in perfecting a Christian character, God will work upon the plan of multiplication. He says in His word: “Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord.” 2 Peter 1:2.The Sanctified Life
A Progressive Work
SL 94.1
Sanctification is a progressive work. The successive steps are set before us in the words of Peter: “Giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 1:5-8). “Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: for so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ” (verses 10, 11).SL 94.2
Here is a course by which we may be assured that we shall never fall. Those who are thus working upon the plan of addition in obtaining the Christian graces have the assurance that God will work upon the plan of multiplication in granting them the gifts of His Spirit. Peter addresses those who obtained like precious faith: “Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord” (verse 2). By divine grace, all who will may climb the shining steps from earth to heaven, and at last, “with songs and everlasting joy” (Isaiah 35:10), enter through the gates into the city of God.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

“Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,” says the apostle; “for it is God which worketh in you, to will and to do of his good pleasure.” [Philippians 2:12, 13.] As laborers together with God, we are to build our characters according to the divine similitude, according to the spirit and mind of Christ. The apostle Peter instructs us as to the plan on which we must work. “Grace and peace be multiplied unto you,” he says, “through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, according as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called you to glory and virtue: whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises; that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” [2 Peter 1:2-4.]14LtMs, Ms 120, 1899, par. 12

After enumerating the privileges of those who work on the plan of addition, constantly adding Christian attributes to the character, the apostle Peter declares that God will work on the plan of multiplication. “Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, according as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue; whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises; that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. ... This message is not only for the church at Battle Creek, but for every other church that has followed her example. The apostle Peter sets before us the work to be done by every one who claims to be a child of God. As we work on the plan of addition, God will work on the plan of multiplication. “Grace and peace be multiplied unto you,” He says, “through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, according as his divine power hath given unto as all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises, that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” [Verses 2-4.]14LtMs, Ms 157, 1899, par. 13

There is power in genuine religion. Through faith, through conformity to the will of God, we shall become so Christlike that men will see that we are partakers of the divine nature, and that we are making constant advancement in the knowledge of Christ. As we co-operate with the Saviour, working on the plan of addition outlined in the following words, He works for us on the plan of multiplication: “Beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. Every agent may find something to do in saving souls and advancing the truth of God. By the Spirit’s power, this truth is to be carried into the inner sanctuary of the soul and work upon the conscience, and its presence there is revealed by the works done to restore the moral image of God in man. There is too much vague instruction. Is it not best to know individually what we believe ourselves, and in what our faith consists? Then we shall be able to say, “Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, according as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that has called us to glory and virtue: whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” [2 Peter 1:2-4.]12LtMs, Ms 46, 1897, par. 6

If we would always take such a position as this when tempted, refusing to dally with temptation or argue with the enemy, the same experience would be ours. It is when we stop to reason with the devil that we are overcome. It is for us to know individually that we are right in the warfare, to take the affirmative in the sight of God, and there to stand. Then through faith man may make the righteousness of Christ his own, and through repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ, he may become a partaker of the divine nature. “According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye”—might doubt the precious assurances and set them aside, ignore them as of little value? No! but be strengthened in the faith, and take these promises and appropriate them to yourselves as the unfailing pledge of God to you that He will be your strong helper—“That by these (promises) ye might (through faith) be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” [2 Peter 1:3, 4.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

Only through faith in Christ is it possible for man to live the law. Man is not able to save himself, but the Son of God fights his battles for him, and places him on vantage ground by giving him His divine attributes. And as man accepts the righteousness of Christ, he is a partaker of the divine nature. He may keep the commandments of God, and live. Says Peter: “According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called you to glory and virtue: whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises, that by them ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” [2 Peter 1:3, 4.]2 Peter 1:3-11

Monday, the last day of the meeting, Elder Loughborough spoke in the forenoon and I spoke in the afternoon as illustrated by the apostle in his ladder of eight rounds. 2 Peter 1:3-11. The Spirit and power of God rested upon me. I then invited those who wished to seek God to come forward, and those who felt that they were unready for the appearing of Christ and desired here to consecrate themselves unreservedly to God, to separate themselves from the congregation and come forward. Nearly all in the tent responded. We had a most solemn time. The presence of the Lord was indeed in our midst.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

In Christ we have a sure defense. “His divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him that hath called us to glory and virtue; whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises, that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. And besides this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue.” A virtuous character is of the highest value. “And to virtue knowledge.” All slothfulness, all indolence is to be steadily overcome. “And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience.” [2 Peter 1:3-6.] Take time to study how to make your work a success. It is by the quality of our work rather than the quantity that we shall be judged at the last great day.19LtMs, Lt 137, 1904, par. 9

These words show the necessity of our doing most thorough, solid work in our character building. “He that lacketh these things is blind”—he has a perverted judgment—“and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.” [Verse 9.]19LtMs, Lt 137, 1904, par. 12
Oh, for Christ’s sake, respond to the invitation given you by the Saviour. “Give diligence to make your calling and election sure; for if ye do these things”—living on the plan of addition, adding grace to grace, building up day by day a pure, refined, noble character—“ye shall never fall; for so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” [Verses 10, 11.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

We expect to see the salvation of God. Christ is on the giving hand. “His divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain to life and godliness, ... that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience ... brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity; for if these things be in you and abound, they make you that ye shall be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. ... Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure; for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall; for so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” [2 Peter 1:3-8, 10, 11.]17LtMs, Lt 127, 1902, par. 15
Is not this promise broad enough? When we are tempted to complain, let us ask ourselves what we shall gain by murmuring. God requires us to obey His commandments, and perfect must be our obedience. Then we shall gain the reward. “An entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” [Verse 11.] Believe this precious promise, and break forth into praise and song. Remember that you are striving for a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. Thank God for His love and goodness. Do not allow anything to separate you from Him.2 Peter 1:3-12

“According as His divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness” [2 Peter 1:3]. Then if you are lost, you will be left without excuse. The time is coming when your parents, if they have purified their lives by obeying the truth, will come up to the gates of the city of God and the gates will open before them. Are their children preparing to enter with them? If the parents have worked out their own salvation with fear and trembling, if they have in the fear of God tried to help their children, their work will be accepted. But perhaps their children have refused to be helped, and have chosen to follow their own inclinations. Will you not, as young people, act in harmony with the knowledge that you have received, and join the army of believers to work out your own salvation with fear and trembling?2MR 289.1

Let those men and women who are satisfied with their dwarfed, crippled condition in divine things be suddenly transported to heaven and for an instant witness the high, the holy state of perfection that ever abides there,—every soul filled with love; every countenance beaming with joy; enchanting music in melodious strains rising in honor of God and the Lamb; and ceaseless streams of light flowing upon the saints from the face of Him who sitteth upon the throne, and from the Lamb; and let them realize that there is higher and greater joy yet to experience, for the more they receive of the enjoyment of God, the more is their capacity increased to rise higher in eternal enjoyment, and thus continue to receive new and greater supplies from the ceaseless sources of glory and bliss inexpressible,—could such persons, I ask, mingle with the heavenly throng, participate in their songs, and endure the pure, exalted, transporting glory that emanates from God and the Lamb? Said Christ, “As the Father gave me commandment, even so I do” (John 14:31). He came to our world on a mission from the Father. He came to bridge the gulf that sin had made between God and man. There was to be made a provision for a reconciliation, for a union of the human with the divine nature. Christ would sanctify all who believe in Him. In the gift of Christ to our world, God has provided for everyone a power to overcome evil. Those who have fallen by sin and iniquity may receive the pardoning love of God. By repentance and faith, the transgressors of His law may come to God through Christ. And when we have come to Christ, and have taken the steps requisite in conversion, we are to “seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.” Colossians 3:1. When we are burdened with care and sorrow, why do we not go to our Saviour, and claim His promises, and find Him a very present help in every time of trouble? We are not left to be the sport of Satan’s temptations. God has given us precious promises, by which we are to become partakers of the divine nature. 2 Peter 1:4. In Christ is our help. When we come with repentance and faith, however polluted and sinful we may be, we shall find Him the sinner’s Saviour. He has said, “I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” The sinner may carry his load to Calvary, and lay it down at the foot of the cross. It is the privilege of every one to leave sin and transgression, and to become a loyal subject of the God of heaven. We may be clothed with the righteousness of Christ, but His righteousness will not be a covering for the least iniquity. “Wash you, make you clean;” for there has been a fountain opened for Judah and Jerusalem, and every stain may be cleansed away. Brother Wicks made a sad mistake of shifting the responsibility of his stewardship upon his wife, and she made a sad mistake in urging him to do so. The Searcher of hearts, to whom the intents and purposes of every heart stand faithfully revealed, was acquainted with the motives and purposes, and this transfer of property was not from motives which would stand the test of the judgment. Sister Wicks’ peculiar traits of character are penurious, selfish, acquisitive. In order for her to be benefited by the mediation of Christ and inherit eternal life, she must be an overcomer and imitate the character of her divine Lord, doing good to others, living for the benefit of others, loving others as Christ has loved us. The precious gift of love, possessed so largely by our Saviour, she is a stranger to. His life was characterized by noble, disinterested benevolence. His whole life was not marred by one selfish act. “He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.” 1 John 2:6. “Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: Because as he is, so are we in this world.” 1 John 4:17. “Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises; that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” 2 Peter 1:4.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 1 (1844 - 1868)

Your experience has not been of the right stamp, and I do not wish yourself or others should consider that your experience in the religious life is safe for them to imitate. The design of God in giving us rich promises is stated by the Apostle Peter, that we “might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” [2 Peter 1:4.] We must have earthly, worldly tastes transformed to the divine and heavenly. Heaven would be no heaven to you or to me if our tastes and our meditations and our temper were not Christlike. The pure and heavenly mansions which Christ has gone to prepare for His children are such as the redeemed alone can value by being made meet for them by the inward work of grace in their hearts. I might picture to you the blessedness of heaven, the crowns laid up for the conquerors, the white linen which is the righteousness of Christ, the palm branches of victory, and the harps of gold. But all these alone will not make heaven a place of bliss for any one of us. Without any of these, if we had pure and holy characters, we would be happy, for we would have Jesus and His love. Purity and innocence and conformity to Christ’s character will make heaven enjoyable. All the faculties will be strengthened, all in harmony. Perfect bliss can only dwell in the heart where Christ reigns supreme. Christ came to our world to die, the Just for the unjust, the Sinless for the sinful; that He might elevate and ennoble men and women and stamp His divine image upon them. For this His Spirit strives with us, that there may be an ever-advancing vigor and perfection of spiritual life which is the way we become partakers of the divine nature, having the likeness of Christ’s character.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 4 (1883 - 1886)

Will not this people understand [that through] their own course of worldliness, of selfishness, [they] have forfeited the mercies promised to the obedient? In view of the great benefits of the salvation brought to us through Jesus Christ, the whole heavenly host in the plains of Bethlehem broke forth into songs of praise saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace, good will toward men.” Luke 2:14. Why is there not more praise and less complaining? Should not our hearts be filled with gratitude to God? If angels saw cause for anthems of praise, why should not the objects Christ came to save be filled with thankfulness? God knows you by name, and where you live. Every dishonesty, and every thing is open to His eye. God’s eye is upon His people. Light will come as they live it. God is at work in our behalf. He gave all heaven with His Son. God did not want the confederacy of evil to say that He could do more than He had done. Worlds that He had created, intelligent angels in heaven, can testify that nothing more could be done in behalf of man. We can be “partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” [2 Peter 1:4.] We are to be in the world and not of the world. He who co-operates with God, striving earnestly to separate himself from the world and its corrupt influences, becomes a partaker of the divine nature, “having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” [2 Peter 1:4.] Can those who realize that they are members of the royal family, children to the heavenly King, heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ, degrade a nature that, through the merits of Christ, is related to angels, to Christ, yea, and to God Himself? Can those who realize the possibilities before them, who know that they are called to receive an immortal inheritance, to reign as kings and priests on the earth fail to use every power of their being in an effort to become one with Christ? Now is the time of probation. Shall those who have received the light be slothful, rebellious servants, unwilling to put forth diligent effort to become holy, pure, and undefiled?Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

In keeping the first four commandments, which reveal the duty of man to his God, the worshiper of God will find that he cannot cherish one fiber of the root of selfishness. He cannot do his duty to his God and practice oppression toward his fellow men. The second principle of the law is like unto the first, “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.” “This do, and thou shalt live.” [Luke 10:27, 28.] These are the words of Jesus Christ, from which there can be no departure on the part of any man, woman, or youth who would be a true Christian. It is obedience to the principles of the commandments of God that molds the character after the divine similitude. Those who render this obedience through the grace of Christ possess the attributes of the Saviour’s character, and are partakers of the divine nature having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. [2 Peter 1:4.] The word “lust” here includes not only licentiousness, but covetousness, desire for position, love of money, and that which leads to false dealings and unjust practices.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

“The corruption that is in the world through lust.” [2 Peter 1:4.] This does not apply merely to the sin of licentiousness. Selfishness, self-gratification, pride of dress, of appearance, of talents, of knowledge, love of amusement, evil-surmising, evil-speaking, impatience, corrupt thoughts, impure conversation, covetousness—all these, if indulged, become warring lusts which fight against the Spirit of God. The work of the Holy Spirit is to reprove of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment. This reproof—coming from the agents whom God may use—if rejected, leaves the soul in the same darkness which surrounded the Jews when they refused the light sent them through God’s beloved Son.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

This is no mere empty theory; it is a positive promise that there is joy in obedience. Upon the obedient the Sun of Righteousness arises with healing in His wings. It is all-important that we each have an eye single to discern and understand from the heart the high things of God; for even that which we have before considered to be light may be found to be sparks of our own kindling [Isaiah 50:11]. Man cannot possibly interpret the Scriptures correctly by his own light, and measure them by his own narrow comprehension. “Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise” [1 Corinthians 3:18]. When, through the grace of Christ, man has crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts [Galatians 5:24], then, and then only, can he become a partaker of the divine nature [2 Peter 1:4]. But many act as though they were above the Lord Jesus Christ. He was pure and undefiled, wholly obedient to His Father’s commandments, and His true followers must be as He was.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

The ministers and physicians who shall connect with the sanitarium are on trial. God is taking the measurement of the temple and the worshipers therein. Our profession of faith demands that a close work be done in families. “Seeing then that we have this ministry, we faint not, but have renounced the hidden things of darkness, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully, but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.” [2 Corinthians 4:1, 2.] We are not to weaken the principles of the truth by imperfect lives. The truth is to shine forth much more brightly than it has done. It is of God; it maketh free; it overcometh the world. Its principles are from above, and if brought into the daily life will make the character Christlike. Christ desires His people to be partakers of the divine nature, “having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” [2 Peter 1:4.] Freedom from corruption—this is what we are to seek for in all our associations, in all our work, in all our institutions—schools, publishing houses, sanitariums, and food factories. Those who are soundly converted to the truth will strive earnestly to advance the truth in its purity. They will seek to the best of their ability to make the truth what it should be to every household.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

If you keep His commandments in truth, the light will shine forth through Oakland, through Berkeley, and through all these neighboring cities. “Ye are the light of the world;” and then He says further, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” [Verse 16.] It is the good works that are needed. We need the power to lay hold of divinity, a power that will never fail us so long as we keep our hold upon it. That power makes us a “partaker of the divine nature,” and enables us to escape “the corruption that is in the world through lust.” [2 Peter 1:4.] Let us now come humbly before God, confessing our sins, and let us by faith take hold of the divine nature. These virtues are wonderful treasures. They “make a man more precious that fine gold; even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir.” Isaiah 13:12.3TT 384.2

I was shown, away back, your character in youth. You did not lay the foundation for a virtuous character. You followed inclination, you followed the bent of your own mind. You loved yourself. You were very exacting, very pettish and fretful. Had your morals in your youth been unsullied, you could then, with some hope of ultimate success, have built upon a virtuous character, the graces which Peter specifies. “Add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. The Lord commands us through the apostle Peter, Giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience Godliness; and to Godliness brotherly kindness, charity, love—for if these things be in you and abound, they make you that ye shall be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. To reach the high standard that is placed before you will call for the taxation of your highest powers, and will require persevering, untiring energy. To become a man after God’s order it is necessary to lay the foundation in a virtuous character, to “add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brother kindness charity. God calls upon men to co-operate with His power. He alone can make the Word effective and give the increase. Faith must be kept in constant exercise, that the Christian duties to be done for those who shall attend our camp meetings may be faithfully performed. Those who do the commandments of God will in every tent effort add to their faith virtue, “and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity; and if these things be in you and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” [2 Peter 1:5-8.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

God desires that the youth shall become skillful, thorough laborers, wearing Christ’s yoke, lifting His burdens. “Ye are laborers together with God,” He says. [1 Corinthians 3:9.] The children and youth should seek most earnestly to advance in understanding, in mental acquirements; their aim should be in spiritual as well as temporal things, to work upon the plan of addition. “Giving all diligence,” the apostle Peter says, “add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” [2 Peter 1:5-8.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

The apostle Paul declares, “Ye are God’s husbandry; ye are God’s building.” [1 Corinthians 3:9.] The material for the building is plainly specified in the words, “Giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” [2 Peter 1:5-8.] Here we are shown how we may co-operate with God. Man is to work constantly upon the plan of addition, while God works on the plan of multiplication. Thus man grows in spirituality, until he presents to the world, to angels, and to men such perfection of character that in the heavenly courts the words are spoken, “Ye are complete in him.” [Colossians 2:10.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

My brother, my sister, it has been your privilege to sanctify yourself wholly to God’s service. You will be sustained by ministrations of heavenly angels. The Holy Spirit will help you in every emergency, enabling you to remain sanctified in mind and heart. Why?—Because you are dead, and your life is bound up with the life of Jesus Christ. You live in Him; He abides in you; and you are united as one. You are actuated by His mind, and you think right thoughts and speak right words. Forgetting not that you have been cleansed from sin, you grow in grace, adding “to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. Those who have not sanctified themselves to the Lord are of the class who profess righteousness but do not maintain good works. These are brought to view in the first chapter of Second Peter. There are many like the scribes and Pharisees who, lacking these things, are “blind, and cannot see afar off,” who have forgotten that they were purged from their old sins. [Verse 9.] Because they do not gather with Christ they lose their impressions for good. As unfaithful stewards they do not guard their own house. If those who have been under the special conviction of the Spirit of God, who have known the truth, and understand the reasons of our faith, would be blessed by the means provided at infinite cost, they will not cease their fervent prayers until the Sun of Righteousness abides in their hearts by faith.14LtMs, Ms 78, 1899, par. 14

Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure; for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall; for so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” [Verses 1-8, 10, 11.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

When you entered the army of Christ, when you were numbered with the believers, there was nothing in your family relationship to strengthen you. Your unhappy training had left its impress upon mind and character. Externally you improved by association, but often your inclinations were in the wrong direction. Your connection with the chosen people of God gave you superior advantages. The truth has given you all you have that is worth, refined, and elevated. My brother and sister, had you improved your opportunities for obtaining a knowledge of the truth, you would not have been corrupted by false theories. But you became proud and self-sufficient, and the result is before you. You would not receive admonition. Your hearts rose up in rebellion against reproof. You despised the warnings God sent to keep you in the right way. They did not please you. You did not search the Scriptures to learn the evidence of truth. You did not work upon the plan of addition as outlined in the first chapter of Second Peter.14LtMs, Lt 33, 1899, par. 11

I spoke from the first chapter of Second Peter. “Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.” [Verse 1.] If all could appreciate this great blessing, what an advantage it would be to them. We can obtain like precious faith with Peter and those who were his companions through only one source—the righteousness of Jesus Christ, who stood at the head of humanity as a sin-bearer, overcoming in our behalf, that we might overcome in His strength. “As many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” [John 1:12.]14LtMs, Ms 11, 1899, par. 3
Man is given the privilege of being a laborer together with God in the saving of his own soul. He is to receive Christ as his personal Saviour, and is to continue to believe in Him. Receiving and believing is our part of the contract. This means abiding in Christ. Have faith in Him at all times and under all circumstances. This faith is a constant representation of Christ’s character, for it is a faith that works by love and purifies the soul from all defilement. Christ is the Author of this faith, and He demands that it be constantly exercised. Thus we receive a constant supply of grace. “Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of Christ and of Jesus our Lord.” [2 Peter 1:2.]14LtMs, Ms 11, 1899, par. 6
Each individual must obtain an experience for himself. No one can depend for salvation on the experience or practice of any other man. We must each become acquainted with Christ ourselves in order to properly represent Him to our world. “According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue.” [Verse 3.] None of us need excuse our hasty temper, our misshapen characters, our selfishness, envy, jealousy, or any impurity of soul, body, or spirit. God has called us to glory and virtue. We are to obey the call.14LtMs, Ms 11, 1899, par. 7
“Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises; that by these we might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” [Verse 4.] Without divine aid we could not possibly escape the temptation and snares that Satan has prepared to deceive and allure human minds by falsehoods and misrepresentations, so that he may make error appear as truth.14LtMs, Ms 11, 1899, par. 13
Why then, we may ask, do we not have more of the Holy Spirit? Because we do not abide in Christ, eating His flesh and drinking His blood. All who eat the heavenly bread will have eternal life. “He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk even as he walked.” [1 John 2:6.] God has given us every facility, every grace. He has provided the very riches of heaven’s treasure, and it is our privilege to draw continually from the capital. But we do not avail ourselves of this privilege. The apostle exhorts us, “And besides this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue (which will demonstrate the purity and holiness of your character) and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance, patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.” [2 Peter 1:5-7.]14LtMs, Ms 11, 1899, par. 15
“If these things be in you and abound,” the apostle continues, “they make you that ye shall be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” [Verse 8.] But a profession of faith without corresponding works is nothing. “He that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.” [Verse 9.] This is a true description of a professed Christian who lives his old life of sin. He grieves the Lord Jesus, and puts Him to open shame because he manifests a character after the similitude of Satan. He retains the same objectionable traits of character that he had before he claimed to receive Christ. By indulging his corrupt tendencies he forgot to be a doer of the Word. He did not eat the flesh or drink the blood of the Son of God. He did not practice Christ’s words or do His works.14LtMs, Ms 11, 1899, par. 16
Then comes the conclusion, “Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things ye shall never fall: for so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” This is the life insurance policy that every one may have. The apostle says, “I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth. Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle to stir you up by putting you in remembrance.” [Verses 10-13.]14LtMs, Ms 11, 1899, par. 19
The price of heaven is Christ. The way to heaven is obedience to the command, Deny thyself, take up thy cross, and follow me. “Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of God, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.” “He that cometh unto me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.” [John 6:53, 35.] In Christ there is inexhaustible fulness. As we follow on to know the Lord, we shall lead souls to the Word of God. With us they will know that his going forth is prepared as the morning. As man works on the plan of addition, adding grace to grace, God works on the plan of multiplication. “Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, according as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue.” [2 Peter 1:2, 3.] The mass of rubbish of vanity and self-love, of evil-thinking and evil-speaking, that we carry with us keeps us powerless and inefficient.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 15 (1900)

Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance; knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus hath showed me. Moreover I will endeavor that ye be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance. For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty. For He received from God the Father honor and glory, when there came such a voice to Him from the excellent glory, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Shall we live on the plan of addition, or on the plan of subtraction? We have had many precious meetings here, and we need to make the very best account of our privileges. We shall very probably never all meet again on this earth; but I want to meet this people in the kingdom of God. We plead with you for Christ’s sake to bear in mind your high calling. Never forget that you are to live on the plan of addition. You are to keep adding grace to grace, constantly overcoming the tendencies to evil that are in your nature, constantly resisting the temptations of the world that will press continually upon you in these last days. For this work the promise of grace is given you: “Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord.” [Verse 2.]24LtMs, Ms 49, 1909, par. 19
The apostle Peter, in referring to his work as an elder of the church, declares that he is “a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed.” [1 Peter 5:1.] This is the glory of which he speaks when he says: “His divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him that hath called us to glory and virtue.” [2 Peter 1:3.] It is this glory of which we may all be partakers as faithful ministers. But those who share in this glory must give earnest heed to the apostles’ exhortation: “Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being ensamples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.
