“For we are laborers together with God; ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building. According to the grace of God, which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.” [1 Corinthians 3:9, 10.] I wish to present before you the great good that may be done if our brethren who attend the school, and especially the ministers, would have some interest and burden for the church at North Fitzroy. It is not so much preaching that they need, as it is that which may appear little, helps in various ways, which mean very much to the success of the work.1 Corinthians 3:9-11

The house riveted to the rock stands firm, unmoved by the fiercest temptations. In building securely for eternity there is but one sure Foundation. God is rich in resources, but there is only one provision made. “Other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 3:11.2LtMs, Lt 52, 1874, par. 15
We are builders. Every day we are laying a brick. We are adding grace to grace, one good deed upon another—of faith, patience, temperance, benevolence, courage, self-denial, brotherly love, courtesy, and humility. A well-developed character is harmonious, and not a jumble of opposites and inconsistencies. “Ye are God’s building,” says the apostle. [Verse 9.] Grow up, my children, a beautiful temple to God, and at last you will enter in through the gates into the city.1 Corinthians 3:9-12

Laborers Together With God—If good men and humble men will take up their duty just where it is, to help those who are ready to die, they will be a great blessing to the church. There are unconverted men in the church, and if those who are so longing to show their zeal for the Lord will seek these poor souls and work with patience and perseverance to win them to Jesus, God would work with them. “We are labourers together with God” (1 Corinthians 3:9), not to tear down and destroy, but to restore. “Make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way” (Hebrews 12:13). There is an abundance of work that is needed to be done in home missions, and in exercising the talents God has given us, for wise improvement. We may become skillful as a tradesman in His business by practice. We want to become skillful in the trade of working to bless souls, learning to save souls. This requires prayer, and earnest, persevering effort, and a willingness to work in a humble way.1MR 357.2
“Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is” (1 Corinthians 3:12). I would caution all believers to learn to maintain a godly jealousy over yourselves, lest Satan shall steal your heart away from God, and you slip unconsciously into work in Satan’s lines, without perceiving that you have changed leaders, and be found in the treacherous power of a tyrant.1 Corinthians 3:9-13

“Ye are God’s husbandry.” [1 Corinthians 3:9.] Will the students apply this lesson while they are working upon the land, tilling the soil, plowing and harrowing, putting all the skill they possess into the work of bringing the land into a condition where it will be fit for the planting of the seed, and the trees, preparatory for the harvest? Will they bear in mind that they are God’s husbandry, a part of the Lord’s farm, and that in this term of school there is a great deal of work to be done by those who are appointed to watch for souls as they that must give an account? There are hearts that need much more labor bestowed upon them because the soil has not been under the plow or the harrow. The hardened soil must be broken up and subdued, so that the Word of God, the gospel seed, may find favorable soil for the production of a harvest.12LtMs, Ms 182, 1897, par. 5
The former and the latter rains are needed. “We are laborers together with God.” [Verse 9.] The Lord alone can give the precious former and latter rain. The clouds, the sunshine, the dews at night—these are heaven’s most precious provisions. But all these favors graciously bestowed of Heaven will prove of little worth to those who do not appropriate them by diligent, painstaking effort on their part. Personal efforts must be put forth in agriculture. There is the plowing and replowing. Implements must be brought in and human skill must use them. The seed must be sown in its season. The laws which control seed time and harvest must be observed, else there will be no harvest.12LtMs, Ms 182, 1897, par. 7
The apostle brings in another figure: “Ye are God’s building,” an edifice to be erected. [Verse 9.] The construction of a building calls for skill in using the timber which God has caused to grow for the happiness and blessing of man. The Lord has provided the forest trees, and now man must use the trees. They must be cut down and prepared by saw, and axe, and wedge, and hammer, to be fitted for the building.12LtMs, Ms 182, 1897, par. 10
“Ye are God’s building.” [Verse 9.] Thus is presented the co-partnership of the human and the divine. All the power is of God. “Without me,” says Christ, “ye can do nothing.” [John 15:5.] Then how many hours is it safe for us to try to work alone? All the glory proceeds from God and should flow back in all possible ways to God, through our co-operation with God. All the responsibility is left upon our willing, our working in harmonious connection with God.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 8 (1893)

Some are satisfied to spend their whole time in laying upon the foundation hay, wood, and stubble, and what does it amount to? Nothing; their lifework is lost for time and lost to God for all eternity. If lost, our portion will be with unbelievers and hypocrites. There will be no reward for a mere profession of faith. (1 Corinthians 3:9-14.) The fruit which remains will be as gold and silver. Fires cannot consume these. This is what our work must be.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 7 (1891-1892)

Every one engaging in the work needs these words framed and hung in memory’s hall: “We are labourers together with God” (1 Corinthians 3:9). Then there will not be so many decided failures in the efforts made to win souls to Jesus Christ. There is need of bringing them to the foundation, and building them into a firm structure, that will abide the fires of the last great day. The people cannot be reached, and their hearts broken, except by God’s divine power (see 1 Corinthians 3:9-15)....Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 8 (1893)

You have certainly made strange paths for your feet and for the feet of those who have followed your example. You cannot afford to do this longer; for your soul is in danger. I entreat you to study the Word, “Ye are God’s husbandry; ye are God’s building.” [1 Corinthians 3:9.] It is your privilege to co-operate with God in your character building.18LtMs, Lt 181, 1903, par. 18
I wish you could see how many things are grasped by the human mind that are not of the least advantage. We should bring to the foundation only that which is represented by gold, silver, and precious stones. But many bring worthless material, which, because it is not of the least value, must at last be consumed. Men and women spend time and money and strength in bringing to the foundation this worthless material, holding it fast, as if they feared they might lose it. But in the fires of the last day it will be consumed, and if they themselves are saved, it will be “as by fire.” [1 Corinthians 3:15.] How foolish is their wisdom! How useless their struggle to hold fast that which is worthless! How much wiser to have let it go and put their capabilities to a higher, nobler use, grasping fewer responsibilities and taking time to prove themselves, to weigh their motives, to see whether they are indeed in possession of the love of God.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 20 (1905)

We need now to heed the warning, “Let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.” [Verse 10.] Instruction is to be given line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little. The same faithful work needed in the cultivation of the land is needed in soul-culture. Let us not be slow to learn the lessons that God would teach us. Let us take heed how we build. Let us remember that we are forming characters for eternity. Let us be very careful of our spirit, our words, our acts. Every stroke of work is to bear the divine signature.1 Corinthians 3:9-16

As a family, what have you done for the Master? What are you putting into your character-building? In that day when all that is worthless shall be burnt up, will it be found that you have brought to your foundation “wood, hay, stubble”? [Verse 12.] Brother Lindsay, your record is far worse in the sight of God than that of your family, for talents of a high order have been committed to you. Had you improved your talents and walked in the counsel of God, you would have exerted an influence which would have led your wife and children in the right way. The school in Battle Creek should be made secure from ruthless hands and unconsecrated minds, from men who work to bring in elements that are in no way qualified to strengthen, purify, or ennoble the institution. Let men be chosen from responsible positions who give evidence that God is using them as represented in the words, “Ye are God’s husbandry; ye are God’s building.” [1 Corinthians 3:9.] When God by His Holy Spirit works upon the character, the building is designed by no human architect, erected by no human skill. It is a building designed and fashioned by the great master Builder. It is garrisoned by heavenly intelligences, and its foundation can never be moved.13LtMs, Lt 139, 1898, par. 34
In his epistle to the Corinthians Paul declares, “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.” “Known ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid. What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh. But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.” [1 Corinthians 3:16, 17; 6:15-17.]13LtMs, Lt 139, 1898, par. 50
“We are laborers together with God; ye are God’s husbandry; ye are God’s building.” [1 Corinthians 3:9.] God has given man land to be cultivated. But in order to reap the harvest, there must be harmonious action between divine and human agencies. The plough and other implements of labor must be used at the right time. The seed must be sown in its season. Man is not to fail of doing his part. If he is careless and negligent, his unfaithfulness testifies against him. The harvest is proportionate to the energy he has expended.13LtMs, Lt 139, 1898, par. 51
So it is in spiritual things. “We are laborers together with God.” [Verse 9.] Man is to work out his own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God that worketh in him both to will and to do of His good pleasure. God gives man physical and mental powers. None are heedless. Not one is to be misused or abused. The lower propensities are to be kept under control of the higher powers.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

I did not varnish the matter one particle. I said that should those in our Health Home bring the flesh of dead animals upon the table, they would merit the displeasure of God. They would defile the temple of God, and they would need the words spoken to them, “Whoso defileth the temple of God, him will God destroy.” [1 Corinthians 3:17.] The light that God has given me is that the curse of God is on the earth, the sea, the cattle, on the animals. There will soon be no safety in the possession of flocks or herds. The earth is decaying under the curse of God.13LtMs, Lt 84, 1898, par. 22
The open book of nature is to be the student’s study. Schools should be established away from the cities. I have more invested in this land than any other person. I am carrying students through school paying their expenses that they may get a start. This gives me an influence with teachers and learners. The land was laid out in lots. Houses were to be built, as in a village. But I tell them that buildings are not to be crowded upon the land round the school buildings. This is God’s farm, and it is sacred ground. Here the students are to learn the lesson, “Ye are God’s husbandry; ye are God’s building.” [1 Corinthians 3:9.] The work that is done in the land is to be done in a particular, thorough, wise manner. From the cultivation of the soil and the planting of seed lessons in spiritual lines may be learned.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

Unselfish Christian Service the Aim of the Highest Education—What are you here for? Is it to obtain an education that will help you to stand by the side of Christ in unselfish service? This is the highest education that you can possibly obtain. The Word of God declares, “Ye are labourers together with God.” (See 1 Corinthians 3:9.) “Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure” (Philippians 2:12, 13)....11MR 198.3

There is a world to be warned. Are we to have committees which will bind about the work? As we look over the cities of America, where are the monuments for God? Where are the churches to glorify His name? I thank God for the medical missionary work. God will call for every soul who is educated to work in this line [into] connection with the gospel ministry. He has places for them. Let not one stone be placed in the way of those who are striving to teach our youth how to do this work. The Lord will show that He will work with those who will work. Now there must be a change. Give them an opportunity to go out and see what it means to wrestle in the cause of God as some of His workmen have. Let them see what it means to build up. Let them go in the waste places of the earth. Let them begin to see what it means to establish things out of nothing. When they do this, they will understand that God means that His servants shall be linked in one, that every part of the work—one part has connection with another part, and another part, and another part, and another part; and there it is joined together by the golden links of heaven, and there are to be no kings here ruling at all. There is to be no man that is going to put his hand out and say, “No, you cannot go there; we cannot support you if you go there.” We ask, Have we to do with their supporting? Did they create the means? The means come from the people, and those that are in the destitute fields, the voice of God has told me to instruct them to go to the people, and to tell them their necessities, to draw from the people, and to work just where they can find a place to work, to build up the work in every place that they possibly can. There is a world to be saved, and we want to know if we have got our committees that have got a bind about the work? And we look over the cities—where are the monuments? Where, I ask you, are the churches that were left to glorify God? Where are the workers? I thank God that there is a work going on, and I thank God for the medical missionary work, and every soul that shall obtain that education in connection with the gospel of Jesus Christ, God will call for you; God has a place for you; and those who are laboring for the youth in any line in our schools, in the Sanitarium, and wherever they are at work, don’t you put one stone in their way. The Lord will reveal that He will work with those who do work. “Ye are laborers together with God.” [1 Corinthians 3:9.] Here are the churches. My heart ached when I was in California. There are young men treading right round and round in the churches; but where’s the power? Where’s the power to open the fields for them, and to say, “Here, we are not to stay here with the people that know the truth.” Here is a world that knows nothing about it, and this world is to be converted and educated just as far as they will yield to the truth; but the seed of truth must be sown. Lift up your heads, said Christ, for the fields are all ripe to harvest. Well, He wanted them to look at it, and He wanted them to see it, and He wants every one of you to see it; and to fold your hands and to feel at ease, and to travel from place to place, and place to place, to look after the churches—God help you by giving you the spirit of the message, that your soul shall yearn after other souls, and you will not let go until they are converted. This is the work we want to see done, and until that spirit comes in and takes hold of every man in every Conference, that they are educated, that they are adopting the very light, that should be health reform, that they are living out in paths of self-denial and self-sacrifice. O, my soul, how it has hurt me to have the blocks thrown in the way in regard to myself! They will tell, “Sister White said this.” “Sister White ate cheese, and therefore we are all at liberty to eat cheese.” Well, who told them I ate cheese? Who told them? I never have cheese on my table. There was but one time—I was at Minneapolis—one or two times I have tasted of cheese. That is a different thing from making it a diet, entirely different thing. I have tasted of very bitter herbs on special occasions, when I would not make it a diet. But there was a special occasion in Minneapolis where that I could get nothing, and there were some little bits of cheese cut up on the table, and the brethren were there, and one of them had told me, “If you eat a little of that cheese, it will change the condition;” and I did. I took a bit of that cheese. I do not think that I touched it again the second time. Another says: “Sister White drinks tea, and you can drink tea.” Who of my brethren has ever made that statement? Who has ever heard it, to ever made it of me? I never have tea in my house, and I never set it before any one. Sister White has not had meat in her house or cooked it in any line, or any dead flesh, for years and years. And here is the health reform. “Now I have told you Sister White did not eat meat. Now I want you not to eat meat, because Sister White does not eat it.” Well, I would not give—I would not care a farthing for anything like that. If you have not got any better conviction—you won’t eat meat because Sister White does not eat any—if I am the authority, I would not give a farthing for your health reform. What I want is that every one of you should stand in your individual dignity before God, in your individual consecration to God, that the soul-temple shall be dedicated to God. “Whosoever defileth the temple of God, him will God destroy.” [Verse 17.] Now I want you to think of these things, and do not make any human being your criterion.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

We have the privilege of being trained under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. All the attributes that are excellent are to strengthen our moral powers, that they may have no mist or tarnish upon them. We are weaving our threads in the web of humanity. Not a thread of self glory must be woven into the fabric. And all heaven is imparting its help that we may surmount every obstacle. We are to be one united whole, a force of workers whom heaven can register as “laborers together with God.” [1 Corinthians 3:9.]13LtMs, Ms 21, 1898, par. 14
God would have every human being treat with divine respect the soul whom He has died to redeem. He declares, “Ye are God’s husbandry; ye are God’s building.” [Verse 9] We are to give to the world all the help possible in restoring the moral image of God in man. We are to build characters of a goodly fabric, spiritual, heavenly, perfect.13LtMs, Ms 21, 1898, par. 24
It may be that after habits have become fixed the determination to be independent, to follow their own inclinations and do despite to the counsels of the Word of God, bars the way. But when affliction comes, when they see that they are losing their hold upon this life, they will begin to inquire, What preparations have I made for the future life. They realize that Christ has died for them, but that they have not loved or feared God but have lived rather to serve and please themselves. And now, brought face to face with the grim messenger, they inquire, How is it with my soul? The deathbed repentance may be genuine, and Christ may receive the sinking, conscience-smitten soul, and they be saved, “so as by fire.” [1 Corinthians 3:15.]13LtMs, Ms 21, 1898, par. 26

In plain, decided words, the apostle Paul speaks of our work. “We are laborers together with God; ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building. According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise master-builder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; every man’s work shall be made manifest, for the day shall declare it; because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. If any man’s work abide which he hath built there upon, he shall receive a reward. Carefully study the words, “We are laborers together with God; ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.” [Verse 9.] There is a building designed by no human skill and wrought by no human hand. This building is to be a dwelling place for the Most High. God expects you to prepare a dwelling place for Him. “Thus saith the high and lofty One, that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” [Isaiah 57:15.] “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. And in this great city the work may still progress if the workers will not get above the simplicity of the work, but will keep humble and holy and dependent upon God, not trusting in themselves, not taking any glory to themselves, but depending wholly upon God for His grace, laboring with His Spirit, and then depending wholly on God to give the increase and returning to Him all the praise, all the glory. Self must be hid in God. “Therefore let no man glory in men. For all things are yours; whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours; and ye are Christ’s; and Christ is God’s.” 1 Corinthians 3:21-23.5LtMs, Ms 33, 1887, par. 15
I went to the meeting. A goodly number were present, and I spoke from (1 Corinthians [3]:9)—“Ye are laborers together with God.” The Lord gave me a very sharp testimony for the church who had been murmuring and complaining and finding fault. After speaking to them and faithfully telling them the result of all such work, I then had the front seats vacated and urged those who wished to change their course and be laborers together with God for unity, to be one with Christ and here before God to drop their envying and evil surmising and questioning and evil speaking, to here make a solemn covenant with God by taking these vacant seats. I think the whole church were on their feet moving for the seats, and other seats had to be vacated. I then proposed that those who felt the burden and contrition of soul for the part they had acted should confess their sins before God before we united in prayer. Many hearty, sincere confessions were made, and many more would have been made, but it was a late hour, and we engaged in prayer. I was requested to pray. Brother Matteson interpreted for me. The Lord gave me the spirit of earnest intercession. Then Brother Matteson prayed and Brother Edwin Olsen. There were hearts softened that night. The next move, after the meeting closed, all pressed about me to take me by the hand to thank the Lord that He had wrought for us that night. I feel indeed grateful to God for the manifestation of His Spirit and power in our midst.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

“We are laborers together with God; ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.” [1 Corinthians 3:9.] Let every soul who has a knowledge of the truth bear in mind that man in his finite capabilities can accomplish nothing without God. In His divine plan of salvation, God gave His only begotten Son, that every voice may be silent upon the point that it is not possible for humanity to keep the law of God. In Christ, divinity and humanity bore every test of temptation, and in Him humanity is exalted and honored. In Christ man is privileged to become a partaker of the divine nature. If he will eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of God, he will have eternal life. “It is the spirit that quickeneth,” said Christ; “the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit and they are life.” [John 6:63.]13LtMs, Ms 52, 1898, par. 18

For I think that God hath set forth us the apostles last, as it were appointed to death: for we are made a spectacle unto the world, and to angels and to men.” [1 Corinthians 3:16-23; 4:1, 9.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

Let no one live to please himself. We are laborers together with God. We are to work in union with His Holy Spirit. God is the great First Cause, the Source of all power and grace and efficiency. Human agencies are to yoke up with Christ. “Ye are God’s husbandry.” [1 Corinthians 3:9.] You are to work out that which God works in. “Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” [Philippians 2:12, 13.] Your heart is to be cultivated by the Holy Spirit, that it may bear fruit unto righteousness.14LtMs, Lt 233, 1899, par. 6
“Ye are God’s building.” [1 Corinthians 3:9.] You cannot build your character yourself. You must unite with the divine Builder. Said Paul, “According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereupon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” [Verses 10, 11.] Let no man suppose that he is appointed to be a foundation upon which other human beings are to build. Every human being is to erect his building upon the sure foundation, Jesus Christ. “Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; every man’s work shall be made manifest; for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.” [Verses 12, 13.]14LtMs, Lt 233, 1899, par. 7
I am instructed to say that sufficient carefulness has not been shown in regard to the material which has been brought to the foundation stone. “If any man’s work abideth which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.” Who does not desire, then, to be faithful in co-operating with Christ? “If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss; but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.” [Verses 14, 15.] If he sees his wrong and sincerely repents, he will save himself, but his lifework is a failure.14LtMs, Lt 233, 1899, par. 8
“Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you. If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.” [Verses 16, 17.]14LtMs, Lt 233, 1899, par. 9
To those who lift themselves up in exaltation, supposing that anything they may choose to do is right, the caution comes, “Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise.” [Verse 18.] Let not his soul be puffed up with self-conceit, for he is but a man. He is not God. He is not to suppose that he is a foundation upon which other men are to build. There is danger here, and I am instructed to say, Take heed. All ye are brethren. “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.” [Verse 19.]14LtMs, Lt 233, 1899, par. 10
Just as surely as men weave the threads of selfishness into the pattern, their work will be revealed. For “the Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain. Therefore let no man glory in men; for all things are yours.” [Verses 20, 21.] The Lord gives wisdom to those who will make the best use of this wisdom. Christ declares, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.” [Matthew 28:18.] God knows who is prepared to act as His helping hand in the closing scenes of this earth’s history.14LtMs, Lt 233, 1899, par. 11
“All things are yours; whether Paul or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours; and ye are Christ’s; and Christ is God’s.” [1 Corinthians 3:21-23.] God sees where His wisdom is most needed and where it will accomplish the most good. He will strengthen the minds of His servants. He will help them to devise and plan and execute for the greatest advantage of His work.1 Corinthians 3:10-11

Chapter 3—An Era of Spiritual Darkness
GC 56.2
The few faithful builders upon the true foundation (1 Corinthians 3:10, 11) were perplexed and hindered as the rubbish of false doctrine obstructed the work. Like the builders upon the wall of Jerusalem in Nehemiah’s day, some were ready to say: “The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build.” Nehemiah 4:10. Wearied with the constant struggle against persecution, fraud, iniquity, and every other obstacle that Satan could devise to hinder their progress, some who had been faithful builders became disheartened; and for the sake of peace and security for their property and their lives, they turned away from the true foundation. Others, undaunted by the opposition of their enemies, fearlessly declared: “Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, which is great and terrible” (verse 14); and they proceeded with the work, everyone with his sword girded by his side. According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise master builder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. 1 Corinthians 3:10-13.Spiritual Gifts, vol. 2

And to the Corinthians he wrote: “According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise master builder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Paul and the other apostles, and all the righteous who have lived since then, have acted their part in the building of the temple. But the structure is not yet complete. We who are living in this age have a work to do, a part to act. We are to bring to the foundation material that will stand the test of fire—gold, silver, and precious stones, “polished after the similitude of a palace.” Psalm 144:12. To those who thus build for God, Paul speaks words of encouragement and warning: “If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.” 1 Corinthians 3:14, 15. The Christian who faithfully presents the word of life, leading men and women into the way of holiness and peace, is bringing to the foundation material that will endure, and in the kingdom of God he will be honored as a wise builder.1 Corinthians 3:11

“Other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 3:11. “Upon this rock,” said Jesus, “I will build My church.” In the presence of God, and all the heavenly intelligences, in the presence of the unseen army of hell, Christ founded His church upon the living Rock. That Rock is Himself,—His own body, for us broken and bruised. Against the church built upon this foundation, the gates of hell shall not prevail. The Upward Look

“Ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.” [1 Corinthians 3:9.] Do not bring to the foundation that which is represented as wood, hay, stubble; for such material will be destroyed by fire. Bring the material that is spoken of in the Word of God as gold, silver, and precious stones. This will stand the test. If you bring worthless material to the foundation, your work will be consumed. If you yourself are saved, you will have nothing to show for your life-work. You will merely save your won soul. But God desires you not merely to save your own soul, but to bring others to Him, who, when the redeemed are gathered home, will be among those who will cast their glittering crown at the feet of the Redeemer, and fill all heaven with rich music. These ransomed ones will exclaim, “Worthy, worthy is the Lamb that was slain, and that sitteth upon the throne;” and then they will go out to the ones who spoke to them the words which brought them into right relation to God, and will say, “It was your influence, through Christ, that led me to accept the truth of heavenly origin.”Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 19 (1904)

While living in this world, we are to be God’s helping hand. Paul declared, “Ye are God’s husbandry; ye are God’s building.” [1 Corinthians 3:9.] We are to co-operate with God in every measure that He desires to carry out. Are we fulfilling the purpose of the eternal God? Are we daily seeking to have the mind of Christ and to do His will in word and work?19LtMs, Ms 8, 1904, par. 22
Of those who do their part faithfully, it is said, “Ye are laborers together with God.” [1 Corinthians 3:9.] Apart from divine aid, man can do very little; but the heavenly Father and His Son are ready to work through every one who consecrates himself wholly on the altar of service. Every soul before me may co-operate with God and labor for Him acceptably. The Lord desires us all to come into line. To every man He has given an appointed work, according to their several ability.Colporteur Ministry

Christ laid aside His glory and came to this earth to suffer for sinners. If we meet with hardships in our work, let us look to Him who is the Author and Finisher of our faith. Then we shall not fail nor be discouraged. We shall endure hardness as good soldiers of Jesus Christ. Remember what He says of all true believers: “We are laborers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.” 1 Corinthians 3:9.—Testimonies for the Church 6:334, 335 (1900).Our High Calling

Time is very precious, and right here as the scholars are going into the school, it is a splendid opportunity, if you have carried difficulties, to go right to them and tell them, “We want this school to commence without a shred of difficulties between you and me.” We cannot afford it. Never should botch work of any kind be allowed in our institutions. Every student should be taught that in order to pertain to perfection in character building, he must be faithful in the smallest duties appointed him. “Ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building” [1 Corinthians 3:9], and your work is to be done as in the sight of a holy God. “Ye are God’s husbandry; ye are God’s building.” [1 Corinthians 3:9.] Those who are wise may develop characters and ability that will enable them to work in the interests of the school, both in teaching the students from books and in working with them on the land. The knowledge of how to develop an upright character is an education that will tell to the saving of souls.20LtMs, Ms 12, 1905, par. 11
Let the workers in the school remember: “Ye are God’s husbandry; ye are God’s building.” [Verse 9.] Then be careful how you form your characters. Unless these words of the apostle make an impression on our minds, it can never be truthfully said of us, as of the church at Thessalonica, “From you sounded out the word of the Lord; in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak anything.” [1 Thessalonians 1:8.] We need the power of the Holy Spirit, that we may have a depth of character that will enable us to do a genuine work in turning from error to the truth.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 20 (1905)

At this time, when sin is so prevalent and so violently revealed, how important it is that our sanitariums be conducted in such a way that they will accomplish the greatest amount of good. All heaven is interested in the work we are to do for the Master. Heavenly agencies will unite with us in presenting the words of Christ to the unconverted. Remember that we are to be laborers together with God. That word “together” has great significance. [1 Corinthians 3:9.] “Without Me,” said Christ, “ye can do nothing.” [John 15:5.] All the converting efficiency is of Him. We are in danger of greatly overestimating our own capabilities. Our power for service is dependent upon our bringing the Word of God into our life practice. Do not seek merely to work upon the feelings of those for whom you labor. The Word presented in simplicity, with a settled, intelligent knowledge of its requirements, will be received by many, and the Spirit of God will bring conviction to their hearts.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 20 (1905)

“We are laborers together with God.” 1 Corinthians 3:9. The whole chapter is to be carefully read, then let humble prayer go up to God and see how we are filling the measure in Christ Jesus. Bear in mind that “ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.” Such was the speech I was making to a party I thought I might meet on this journey somewhere. I was speaking and the Spirit of God was upon me. I said, “Will you please to reckon up how much of the Lord’s money you have worse than misappropriated? In the use of tobacco, you have abused your own consciences and your claim to be a Seventh-day Adventist. Every penny that is in your possession is to be used to place yourself in the best condition, both physical, mental, and moral, to be healthy, able to discern between righteousness and unrighteousness. The sooner you give up the name, Seventh-day Adventist, the better will it be for the cause of God; for your practice is demoralizing the whole man. How much money you have used to gratify your bad, sinful self-indulgences! When you are willing to be a missionary for God, you will be a thorough reformer.”Our High Calling

We do not know what the Lord will do for us, if we will come into line. God sees what He can make of man. There are possibilities which our feeble faith does not discern. “Ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.” 1 Corinthians 3:9. He sees all the now unamiable traits of character in man, and He knows, if men will learn the meekness and lowliness of Christ, He can mold and fashion the combative spirit, the unamiable disposition, and bring every power of the being into working order to advance His kingdom. He longs to refine, elevate, and ennoble the entire life.... Every one who recognizes the value of a human soul will work to bring forth fruit to the glory of God by working for souls. He will be a co-worker with Christ Jesus. “Ye are laborers together”—together, together—“with God.” [1 Corinthians 3:9.] As you place yourself in right relation with those who are out of Christ, and labor lovingly for them, you will not have so much delicacy that you fear to speak to them. There are souls who are starving for a word of comfort and encouragement—a word that you can give. We must all strive to help one another and to climb the hills of difficulty.21LtMs, Ms 145, 1906, par. 42

You must work to awaken an interest in souls. You must be converted men and women, daily converted. It is not safe for you to be unconverted and to remain under your own control—no, not for a single hour; because Satan will watch his opportunity and may bring some misfortune upon you when you are not upheld by the power of God.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 21 (1906)

We as a people need to be sanctified unto God daily. From day to day, from hour to hour, from moment to moment, we need to know the will of God concerning us. Constantly we are to be on the watch over self. High responsibilities devolve upon every one who has covenanted to serve God and to fulfil all the obligations of this life. We are to cultivate the mind in a knowledge of spiritual things. The whole being—body, soul, spirit—is to be consecrated to God’s service. As we do our part faithfully, shall not the Judge of all the earth do right by us? God placed His church in the earth that it might be the light of the world. But the self-indulgent course of many church members and the rising up of self to take the lines of control have resulted in diffusing darkness rather than light. God’s professing people need to seek Him in sincere sorrow of heart because their is so little life in the church, so little effort put forth to let the light shine in good works. “Ye are laborers together with God,” the apostle Paul declares, “ye are God’s husbandry; ye are God’s building.” [1 Corinthians 3:9.] God designs that life-giving beams shall through the individual members of the church shine forth to the world. Receiving that light from the source of all light, they are to reflect that light to others. But this can be done as the church draws near to God and lives in close connection with the Giver of life and light. The purity and simplicity of Christ, revealed in the lives of His humble followers, will witness to the possession of genuine piety. The believer who is imbued with a true missionary spirit will be a living epistle, known and read of all men. He is a partaker of the divine nature and therefore escapes the corruptions that are in the world through lust.Patriarchs and Prophets

The true object of education is to restore the image of God in the soul. In the beginning God created man in His own likeness. He endowed him with noble qualities. His mind was well balanced, and all the powers of his being were harmonious. But the Fall and its effects have perverted these gifts. Sin has marred and well-nigh obliterated the image of God in man. It was to restore this that the plan of salvation was devised, and a life of probation was granted to man. To bring him back to the perfection in which he was first created is the great object of life—the object that underlies every other. It is the work of parents and teachers, in the education of the youth, to co-operate with the divine purpose; and in so doing they are “laborers together with God.” 1 Corinthians 3:9.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 22 (1907)

When there is any difficulty, there is a blindness all around of this one and that one, and little things start up that grow and increase in magnitude until it seems there is a great difference. Well, now it does not need to be. “Ye are laborers together with God.” [1 Corinthians 3:9.] Now suppose you knew God was right by your side, would you not keep a strict observance over your actions? Would you not seek to please the divine nature? We ought to. Now He says:Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 22 (1907)

Do we want to bury our talents in the earth? In thinking to make a lot of money? No. Bury your talents where you can accomplish the very work that God would have you to accomplish in this world to benefit humanity. Tell them to open the Scriptures to read, Thus saith the Lord. You may think you have got a little talent, but just as soon as you begin to use a talent in the right way, there are angels of God that make an impression. You may be very weak, but the angel of God takes the words that are spoken in sincerity and he drives that word right to the heart. He breaks the stubborn heart. Now we want laborers. And we want that business shall not take the place of the grand work of soul-saving at this time. We want the light of heaven to shine into the soul temple, that our words shall be of that character which shall sink into the heart as the words of Christ. “Ye are laborers together with God.” [1 Corinthians 3:9.] God has His workmen, and we want to work right to the point for the saving of the souls.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 22 (1907)

It is our privilege to speak words that will encourage our associates and fellow laborers; it is not our privilege to speak words that will depress. It is not wise for us to compare ourselves with other workers, speaking of their failings and raising objections to their methods of labor. It would be no surprise if those who are laboring under grave responsibilities, and who have many trials to meet, should sometimes make mistakes. We should thank the Lord that we are not called to serve in their place. Their position calls upon them the censure and criticism of those who have educated themselves to find fault. Let us pray for those upon whom the Lord has laid responsibilities; for this is the duty of all God’s workers. “Ye are laborers together with God.” [1 Corinthians 3:9.] To my brethren I am bidden to say, If the Lord has kept you from making mistakes which you see in the work of others, do not make the great mistake of becoming uplifted and boastful. The principles that should actuate us as workers in God’s cause are laid down by the apostle Paul. He says, “We are laborers together with God.” [1 Corinthians 3:9.] “Whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.” [Colossians 3:23.] And Peter exhorts the believers, “As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth; that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ.” [1 Peter 4:10, 11.]Prayer

Those who have a true sense of what is to be done will place themselves in the direct light of the Word of God, in union with His other working forces. The more fully you put yourself under the direction of God, the greater knowledge you will receive from God. He should believe that Jesus is his companion, close by his side. “We are laborers together with God.” 1 Corinthians 3:9. Never should the physician neglect to direct the minds of his patients to Christ, the Chief Physician. If he has the Saviour abiding in his own heart, his thoughts will ever be directed to the Healer of soul and body. He will lead the minds of sufferers to Him who can restore, who, when on earth, restored the sick to health and healed the soul as well as the body, saying, “Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.” Mark 2:5.Selected Messages Book 1

Divine intelligences cooperate with human agencies as they seek to magnify the law and make it honorable. The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul. It is in the converted soul that the world sees a living testimony. Then shall the Lord of heaven have room to work? Shall He find a place in the hearts of those who claim to believe the truth? Shall His pure, disinterested benevolence meet with a response from the human agent? Shall the world see a display of the glory of Christ in the characters of those who profess to be His disciples? Shall Christ be favored and glorified in seeing His own sympathy and love pouring forth in streams of goodness and truth from His human agents? Chapter 13—Should Christians Be Members of Secret Societies?
2SM 123.1
The people of God on earth are the human agents that are to cooperate with divine agencies for the salvation of men. To the souls that have joined themselves to Him, Christ says, “You are one with Me, ‘labourers together with God’” (1 Corinthians 3:9). God is the great and unperceived actor; man is the humble and seen agent, and it is only in cooperation with the heavenly agencies that he can do anything good. It is only as the mind is enlightened by the Holy Spirit that men discern the divine agency. And hence Satan is constantly seeking to divert minds from the divine to the human, that man may not cooperate with Heaven. He directs the attention to human inventions, leading men to trust in man, to make flesh their arm, so that their faith does not take hold upon God.Selected Messages Book 3

“Ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.” Verse 9. This figure represents human character, which is to be wrought upon, point by point. Each day God works with His building, stroke upon stroke, to perfect the structure, that it may become a holy temple for Him. Man is to co-operate with God. Each worker is to become just what God designs him to be, building his life with pure, noble deeds, that in the end his character may be a symmetrical structure, a fair temple, honored by God and man. There is to be no flaw in the building, for it is the Lord’s. Every stone must be perfectly laid, that it may endure the pressure placed upon it. One stone laid wrong will affect the whole building. To you and to every other worker God gives the warning: “Take heed how you build, that your building may stand the test of storm and tempest, because it is founded on the eternal Rock. Place the stone on the sure foundation, that you may make ready for the day of test and trial, when all will be seen just as they are.”Testimonies for the Church, vol. 9
The Need of Earnest, Whole-Souled Labor
9T 152.1
Christ is our example, our inspiration, our exceeding great reward. “Ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.” 1 Corinthians 3:9. God is the Master Builder, but man has a part to act. He is to co-operate with God. “We are laborers together with God.” Verse 9. Never forget the words: “together with God.” “Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure.” Philippians 2:12, 13. The miracle-working power of Christ’s grace is revealed in the creation in man of a new heart, a higher life, a holier enthusiasm. God says: “A new heart also will I give you.” Ezekiel 36:26. Is not this, the renewal of man, the greatest miracle that can be performed? What cannot the human agent do who by faith takes hold of the divine power?Testimonies for the Church, vol. 9
The Warfare Before Us
9T 221.2
The principles that should actuate us as workers in God’s cause are laid down by the apostle Paul. He says: “We are laborers together with God.” 1 Corinthians 3:9. “Whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.” Colossians 3:23. And Peter exhorts the believers: “As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ.” 1 Peter 4:10, 11.Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students

The talent of knowledge, sanctified and put to use in the Master’s service, is never lost. A self-sacrificing effort to do good will be crowned with success. “We are laborers together with God.” 1 Corinthians 3:9. The Lord will co-operate with the human worker. To Him is to be given the praise and the glory for what we are able to accomplish.CT 452.1
The students are to be taught to help those who need encouragement. As they seek to help others they themselves will “grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18), and their efficiency will be increased. “Ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.” 1 Corinthians 3:9. Christians will fulfill the purpose of God for them only as they increase in knowledge and return to Him in earnest service the gifts they have received.Testimonies for the Church, vol. 1
Chapter 79—Communications to Elder Hull
1T 432.1
I saw that ministers who labor in word and doctrine have a great work before them; a heavy responsibility rests upon them. In their labor they do not come close enough to hearts. Their work is too general, and often too scattered. Their labor must be concentrated to the very ones for whom they are laboring. When they preach from the desk, they only commence their work. They must then live out their preaching, ever guarding themselves, that they bring not a reproach upon the cause of God. They should illustrate by example the life of Christ. 1 Corinthians 3:9: “For we are laborers together with God.” 2 Corinthians 6:1: “We then, as workers together with Him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain.” The minister’s work is not done when he leaves the desk. He should not then throw off the burden and occupy his mind with reading or writing unless this is actually necessary. He should follow up his public labors by private efforts, laboring personally for souls whenever an opportunity presents, conversing around the fireside, beseeching and entreating souls in Christ’s stead to be reconciled to God. Our work here is soon to close, “and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labor.”Testimonies for the Church, vol. 7

God and Nature
6T 186.2
The God of nature is perpetually at work. His infinite power works unseen, but manifestations appear in the effects which the work produces. The same God who guides the planets works in the fruit orchard and in the vegetable garden. He never made a thorn, a thistle, or a tare. These are Satan’s work, the result of degeneration, introduced by him among the precious things; but it is through God’s immediate agency that every bud bursts into blossom. When He was in the world in the form of humanity, Christ said: “My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.” John 5:17. So when the students employ their time and strength in agricultural work, in heaven it is said of them, Ye “are laborers together with God.” 1 Corinthians 3:9.Testimonies for the Church, vol. 6
Chapter 27—The Physician’s Work for Souls
6T 231.4
Every opportunity of working as Christ worked should be carefully improved. The physician should talk of the works of healing wrought by Christ, of His tenderness and love. He will lead the minds of sufferers to Him who can restore, who when on earth restored the sick to health and healed the soul as well as the body, saying: “Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.” Mark 2:5.Testimonies for the Church, vol. 6
Chapter 42—Revival of the Canvassing Work
6T 335.1
Christ laid aside His glory and came to this earth to suffer for sinners. If we meet with hardships in our work, let us look to Him who is the Author and Finisher of our faith. Then we shall not fail nor be discouraged. We shall endure hardness as good soldiers of Jesus Christ. Remember what He says of all true believers: “We are laborers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.” 1 Corinthians 3:9.Testimonies for the Church, vol. 6
Chapter 53—The Church and the Ministry
6T 420.2
Our churches are to co-operate in the work of spiritual tilling, with the hope of reaping by and by. There is much perversity to be met, much thwarting of holy plans and consecrated effort, because of the evil heart of unbelief. But the work must be done. The soil is stubborn, but the fallow ground must be broken up, the seeds of righteousness must be sown. Pause not, teachers beloved by God, as though doubtful whether to prosecute a labor which will grow as performed. Fail not, neither be discouraged. They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. “We are laborers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.” 1 Corinthians 3:9. Remember that you cannot trust in self.Testimonies for the Church, vol. 6
A Warning from the Church of Ephesus
6T 423.2
But what are the members of the church doing that they should be designated “laborers together with God”? 1 Corinthians 3:9. Where do we see travail of soul? Where do we see the members of the church absorbed in religious themes, self-surrendered to the will of God? Where do we see Christians feeling their responsibility to make the church prosperous, a wide-awake, light-giving people? Where are those who do not stint or measure their loving labor for the Master? Our Redeemer is to see of the travail of His soul and be satisfied; how is it with those who profess to be His followers? Will they be satisfied when they see the fruit of their labors? That I May Know Him

Jesus calls us to Himself not simply to refresh us with His grace and presence for a few hours, and then to send us forth from His light to walk apart from Him in sadness and gloom. No, no. He tells us that we must abide with Him and He with us. Wherever His work is to be done He is present—tender, loving, and compassionate. He has prepared for you and me an abiding dwelling place in Himself. He is our refuge. Our experience should broaden and deepen. Jesus has opened up all the divine fullness of His inexpressible love, and He declares to you, Ye “are labourers together with God” (1 Corinthians 3:9). O what meaning these words have—“Abide in me” (John 15:4), “Take my yoke upon you” (Matthew 11:29). Will we take it? for the promise is, “Ye shall find rest unto your souls.” There is rest, complete rest in abiding in Christ.12Letter 1a, 1894.That I May Know Him

The Lord has need of all kinds of skillful workmen. “And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ” (Ephesians 4:11, 12).... Each worker in every branch of work in the Lord’s vineyard must have a head and a heart sanctified through the truth to enable him to see not merely the part of the work which is under his supervision, but its relation to the great whole. When the workers are consecrated to God they will reveal the love of God for their brethren who work under the unseen, divine Master Worker. “We are labourers together with God” (1 Corinthians 3:9)....The Upward Look

“We are labourers together with God” (1 Corinthians 3:9). Christ engaged in the great work for which He lived and died. We are to be instant in season and out of season. And why? “For ye are bought with a price,” and have enlisted under the banner of Prince Emmanuel. We are enlisted for labor, “not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life” (John 6:27). We are to work out our own salvation with fear and with trembling. We are not our own. We are bought with a price, to glorify God with our bodies and spirits, which are His. A work is to be done. There is a faithful work to do in His vineyard. And to every man is given his work. If we are privileged with the bread of life, we must work in the Lord’s vineyard. A charge comes to us to deny ourselves and take up the cross and follow Christ. We are to run the race set before us with persevering earnestness. This oft requires energetic movements. We cannot be idlers. We are urged, “Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life.” ...The Upward Look

So it is in spiritual things. The Word of the living God is the seed. Christ is the sower, and unless He constantly works the soil of the heart, there will be no harvest. “Ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building” (1 Corinthians 3:9). God gave His Son to die, the just for the unjust, that there might be a glorious harvest of souls. The human heart is God’s seed plot, and the righteousness of Christ must be cherished there. Then let no man trust in the arm of flesh, but in God. Let each give evidence that he has faith, that he is not a religious dwarf, but that he grows under the dews and showers of the grace of Christ, that his life of righteousness is not of man’s creating, but that it is the righteousness of Christ, which the grace of God has nourished in his heart....The Voice in Speech and Song

Impress of Every Word and Act—“We are laborers together with God.” 1 Corinthians 3:9. He will use you and me and each human being who enters His service, if we will submit to His guidance. Each one is to stand in his watchtower, listening attentively to that which the Spirit has to say to him, remembering that his every word and act makes an impression, not only on his own character, but on the characters of those with whom he is connected.—Testimonies for the Church 8:172.This Day With God

When man fell, God commenced to work to defeat the plans of Satan. God works in man. “Ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building” (1 Corinthians 3:9). In the beginning the Lord enjoined upon man the cultivation of the earth. This work was made much harder because of the transgression of the law of God. By transgressing, man worked against his own present and eternal good. The earth was cursed because through disobedience man gave Satan opportunity to sow in the human heart the seeds of evil. The ground that in the beginning produced only good began to produce tares, and their growth called for continual warfare. This Day With God

The agencies of God are many! But all those who are willing to work according to God’s plan are included in the words, “Ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building” (1 Corinthians 3:9). God’s servants are to move so that no spiritual gift shall be lost. Their will is to be held in abeyance, and when God’s time comes, the rod will blossom. What form the work will take no one can know, but God’s servants are to be minutemen, able to understand the ways and will of their Leader.—Letter 8, January 23, 1899, to Dr. J. H. The Lord Jesus is looking upon every soul with intense interest. He has declared that the spiritual character of His church is to be carefully maintained. The church is in the world, and is to do a work for the world, but the doors of the church are not to be opened to worldliness. “Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up” (Matthew 15:13). The church must be strictly guarded. Its sacred character must be demonstrated to the world. “Ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building” (1 Corinthians 3:9). “Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. Chapter 15—Business Principles and Methods
Ed 138.2
Thus our business or calling is a part of God’s great plan, and, so long as it is conducted in accordance with His will, He Himself is responsible for the results. “Laborers together with God” (1 Corinthians 3:9), our part is faithful compliance with His directions. Thus there is no place for anxious care. Diligence, fidelity, caretaking, thrift, and discretion are called for. Every faculty is to be exercised to its highest capacity. But the dependence will be, not on the successful outcome of our efforts, but on the promise of God. The word that fed Israel in the desert, and sustained Elijah through the time of famine, has the same power today. “Be not therefore anxious (R.V.), saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? ... All, from the oldest to the youngest, need to be taught of God. We may be taught by man to see the truth clearly, but God alone can teach the heart to receive the truth savingly, which means to receive the words of eternal life into good and honest hearts. The Lord is waiting patiently to instruct every willing soul who will be taught. The fault is not with the willing Instructor, the greatest Teacher the world ever knew, but it is with the learner who holds to his own impressions and ideas, and will not give up his human theories and come in humility to be taught. He will not allow his conscience and his heart to be educated, disciplined, and trained—worked as the husbandman works the earth, and as the architect constructs the building. “Ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building” (1 Corinthians 3:9).Ye Shall Receive Power
