Context of Psalms 35:7
5May they be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of Adonai driving them off. 6May their way be dark and slippery, with the angel of Adonai pursuing them. For without cause they hid their net for me, and without cause they dug a pit for my soul. 8Let ruin come upon him by surprise. Let the net he hid entangle himself —into that same pit let him fall. 9Then my soul will rejoice in Adonai and delight in His salvation.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7For without cause have they hid for me their net in a pit - See Psalm 7:15, note; Psalm 9:15, note. This figure is derived from hunting. The reference here is to plans that are laid to entrap and ruin others: plots that are concocted so as to secure destruction…Read the comment

Their imprecations on impenitent rebels against God need no vindication; His justice and wrath are for such; His mercy for penitents. Compare Psa 7:16; 11:5, on the peculiar fate of the wicked here noticed.Read the comment
