Context of Numbers 10:5
3Whenever both are sounded, the whole community is to gather toward you at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting. 4But if only one is sounded, the princes—the heads of the tribes of Israel—are to gather toward you. When you sound the trumpet the first time, the camp of those camped on the east is to set out. 6When you sound the trumpet blast the second time, the camp of those camped on the south is to set out. Short blasts will be the signal for their moving out. 7To gather the whole national community, you are to sound the sustained blasts, but not the short blasts.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5When ye blow an alarm - תרועה teruah, probably meaning short, broken, sharp tones, terminating with long ones, blown with both the trumpets at once. From the similarity in the words some suppose that the Hebrew teruah was similar to the Roman taratantara, or sound of their clarion.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5Blow an alarm - i. e. along continuous peal. Compare Numbers 10:7, ye shall blow, but not sound an alarm: i. e. blow in short, sharp notes, not in a continuous peal. A third and a fourth alarm were probably blown as signals.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5-8When it was time to journey to the next destination, the trumpets sounded to signal when to camp and when to move. This sound was in addition to the movement of the pillar of cloud (compare 9:15–22 and chapter 2).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 3-73-7. when they shall blow with them--There seem to have been signals made by a difference in the loudness and variety in the notes, suited for different occasions, and which the Israelites learned to distinguish. A simple uniform sound by both trumpets summoned a general assembly of the people; the blast of a single trumpet convoked the princes to consult on public affairs; notes of some other kind were made to sound an alarm, whether for journeying or…Read the comment
