Context of Leviticus 8:23
21He washed the innards and the legs with water. Then Moses burned the whole ram up in smoke on the altar. It was a burnt offering for a soothing aroma, an offering by fire to Adonai, as Adonai had commanded Moses. 22Then he presented the second ram, the ram of ordination, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram. Moses slaughtered it, took some of its blood and put it on the tip of Aaron’s right ear, on the thumb of his right hand and on the great toe of his right foot. 24Then Moses brought Aaron’s sons and put some of the blood on the tips of their right ears, on the thumbs of their right hands and on the great toes of their right feet. Then Moses splashed the blood around on the altar. 25He took the fat, the fat tail, and all the fat that was on the innards, as well as the cover of the liver, the two kidneys with their fat and the right thigh.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 23Put it upon the tip of Aaron's right ear, etc. - See this significant ceremony explained in the note on Exodus 29:20; (note). Calmet remarks that the consecration of the high priest among the Romans bore a considerable resemblance to the consecration of the Jewish high priest. "The Roman priest, clothed with a garment of silk, his head covered with a crown of gold adorned with sacred ribbons, was conducted into a subterranean place, over which there was a…Read the comment

We may also rejoice, that he is a merciful and faithful High Priest, full of…Read the comment

This act emphasized the priest's role, with the blood stressing connections to the sacrificial system. The priest's main job was to mediate between God and his people. To do this well, he needed ears to hear God's words and his people's needs. He also needed hands ready to obey God's commands, and feet ready to go where needed.Read the comment
