Context of Leviticus 22:17
15They are not to profane the holy offerings of Bnei-Yisrael, which they lift up to Adonai, 16so causing them to bear the iniquity that brings guilt when they eat the holy offerings. For I am Adonai who sanctifies them.” Adonai spoke to Moses saying: 18“Speak to Aaron and to his sons, and to all Bnei-Yisrael, and say to them: Whoever is from the house of Israel, or one of the outsiders in Israel who brings his offering, whether it be any of their vows or any of their freewill offerings that they present to Adonai for a burnt offering— 19for you to be accepted—you are to offer a male without blemish, from the bulls, the sheep or the goats.

Commentaries on Leviticus 22:17
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-33This section, which discusses priestly rules, six times repeats the phrase I am the Lord who sanctifies (Leviticus 21:15, 23; 22:9, 16, 32; see also 21:8). These words emphasize the link between God's holiness and the holiness expected of priests. This extended to all of Israel (see 8:10; 11:44–45; 19:2). The text specifically addresses priests in 21:1–22:16, while including both clergy and common people in 22:17–33.Read the comment

The reason for this extreme caution is found in the fact that sacrifices are either an expression of praise to God for His goodness, or else they are the designed means of conciliating or retaining His favor.
