Context of Leviticus 18:26
24“Do not defile yourselves in any of these things, for in all of these ways the nations which I am casting out before you were defiled. 25The land has become defiled, so I will punish its iniquity, and the land will vomit out its inhabitants. You, however, are to keep My statutes and My ordinances, and do none of these abominations, neither the native-born, nor the outsider dwelling among you. 27“For all these abominations were done by the men of the land who were before you, and the land became defiled. 28If you defile it, the land will vomit you out as it vomited out the nation that was before you.

The iniquity of the Canaanites was now full. See Genesis 15:16; compare Isaiah 24:1-6. The Israelites in this place, and throughout the chapter, are exhorted to a pure and holy life, on the ground that Yahweh…Read the comment

I am the Lord your God--This renewed mention of the divine sovereignty over the Israelites was intended to bear particularly on some laws that were widely different from the social customs that obtained both in Egypt and Canaan; for the enormities, which the laws enumerated in this chapter were intended to put down, were freely practised or publicly sanctioned in both of those countries; and, indeed, the extermination of the ancient Canaanites is…Read the comment
